Hi all, hope you don't mind me invading your boards and I won't interrupt your daily goings on for long. I support Aston Villa and I wondered if you would giving me your thoughts on the following?

What are your feelings about Randy Learner, has he been good for your club since he took over after his fathers passing?

Do you feel that RL should be doing more at your club?

Do you feel that RL has your club at heart? or do you feel he has other motives of been involved at your club.

Thanks in anticipation. Have a good season.

Firstly, I hate the Villa, c'mon you Spurs.

Secondly, welcome! ;)

Lastly, Randy is prety distant form the running of the team but I do believe he wants Cleveland to be succesdful - The Holmgren appointment was his statement of intent I believe.

I think it wrankles a few of my American buddies that he seems to be more into "Homo Soccer" than real football. One them told me that he is probably more atuned to soccer as he is a weady guy and weady guys never got picked for Football at school in the US.

He's a decent foreign owner for an English football club, pumps in the cash, wears the scarf and doesn't get too involved (is it true he has a Villa tatoo on his leg?)

To be honest, I wish he didn't own Villa. I'd like his attention solely on one sports team - the Browns. It also truly pisses me off seeing Villa goons wearing Browns shirts who have no idea what it means to be a Browns fan. Just being honest.

I think Randy after spending time getting his feet wet is finally starting to get it, as referenced by the hiring of Mike Holmgren, and co. Randy inherited the team after his dad Al Lerner passed away. At the time of Al's passing I feel that the Browns were heading in the right direction, even though we had Dwight Clark as a GM, who couldn't draft to save his life. Butch Davis actually seemed like a good coach, and then his ego got too big. I mean, in Davis's first year the team went from 3-13 to 7-9 and in his second year went 9-7 and got into the playoffs. Then the bottom fell out. I like the fact that Randy has the deep pockets, and is willing to spend the money to fix the past mistakes. He doesn't meddle like Dan Snyder in Washington, or Jerry Jones in Dallas, but in some ways he is too hands off. I too wish he would focus solely on the Browns, but it is what it is. The other thing that irks me is the fact that he doesn't reside in Cleveland, but in Long Island. Most NFL owners reside in their respective cities. However; I do feel that he wants the Browns to be successful, and will make it happen. Billionaires don't become billionaires by being failures.

I just want to know what a "weady" guy is supposed to be?

Perhaps what we would call "nerdy"? That Randy Lerner is.

Weady = Weakling, scrawny, runt. I see nerdy as more of a personality thing than a physical thing - am I correct? Hopefully this clears it up.

He is a hands off owner which means if that what he reflects is the ability of the top management. The previous regime of RAC and Phil Savage were terrible which makes him seem like a terrible owner. If Holmgren and Mangini can turn the tables, time will make him seem like a good owner. He is a hands off guy and is what he is.

Do you feel that RL should be doing more at your club?

He should show more alertness and try to act when things get bad; not when things become worse.

Do you feel that RL has your club at heart? or do you feel he has other motives of been involved at your club.

It is just an investment that has been passed to him from his dad. Maybe, he might have some sentiment towards it. Otherwise it is mostly business.

Thanks in anticipation. Have a good season.

Yea, nerdy would be more personality, but it could be physical as well in the right situation.

Actually, I think of you more as the Official Browns Translator UK Specialist Extraordinaire. or OBTUSE

Welcome to the Board...

I have no problem with RL owning two clubs. To me he is an Ideal Owner. Spends the big $ and doesn't stick his fingers in the pie. He loves the Browns and wants a winner and spends money to get a championship. I like that he is quick to pull the trigger on GM's and coaches who aren't getting it done as well. Holmgren should change this organization for the better for a long time. I don't know how he feels about the team in UK but I like him as an owner. Now if he can work on his hiring and PR decisions....great

The browns have stunk ever since randy took over and rather folks like it or not under big al's ownership the browns were starting to turn it around and even looked somewhat impressive at times with davis slowly putting it all together, now enter randy whom had no idea what he was doing and he really set this club back bigtime in more than one way..

Randy is not a football man by his own admittance and an awful team watchdog imho to boot, as he then hired people to run the team that both took advantage of his distant hands off ownership and also lacked the proper qualifications for the job to boot and that wrecked the team even further...

In randys defense i will say he has learned some hard lessons and in a hands off way is much more involved in the team now, he has also demonstrated that he in fact does care about the team the city and the fans in numerous ways, hiring mike holmgren to be his football knowledgeable fill in as untitled owner/president was a great move...randy has some kind of a mental disorder and doesnt like to to be a public spectacle..which is too bad because i think he is an excellent speaker and a decent person and most fans would love to hear from him in the flesh more often...

I think randy will do just fine from here on in since finally removing his training wheels and having mike holmgren hold him up while he learns to ride...

Even though Lebron is Rich, he can't come close to this guy. (But that is his goal).

I read somewhere else that this is not his English castle, but that this was Al Lerner's estate in Chagrin Falls.

But I don't think so. I though Al Lerner lived on like Nortpark Blvd. in Shaker Hts, not in Chagrin.

I think this is the English estate.

Here is more info I found online about Randy:

You heard it here first. In the 2008 Birmingham Post Rich List we gave you the exclusive news that Brooklyn-born Aston Villa owner Randy Lerner was buying a house near Birmingham. A few weeks later it was confirmed by the man himself. He is renovating a property in Bodymoor Heath, close to Villa’s training ground. In fact that’s just one of the ways in which the US entrepreneur and lawyer is differentiating himself from some other overseas owners of British soccer clubs. He is immersing himself in his adopted city and country, its culture and its heritage. And he is treating the club he owns with respect. He understands that it is a venerable institution with a long history and proud heritage, not simply an investment vehicle to be laden with debt.

As well as a lover of football, he is deeply appreciative of the arts; a fact underlined by his patronage of the National Portrait gallery with a gift of £5 million – the gallery’s biggest ever single gift. In acknowledgement of his generosity the ground floor galleries have been renamed The Lerner Galleries. I’ve scoured the country for the Glazer Galleries or the Abramowitz Art Museum but don’t seem to be able to find them. And he continues to bankroll Villa manager Martin O’Neill’s transfer ambitions, allowing O’Neill to set the pace at which the team is developed. He has also spent £4 million on the much needed renovation of the historically important Holte Hotel, the only surviving remnant of the Victorian Aston Lower Grounds. Randy Lerner, who is 46, also owns American football team the Cleveland Browns. His interest in Aston Villa began in 1983 when he spent a year at Clare College, Cambridge. He followed the team, along with Arsenal and Fulham.

OK, so, did Randy give 5 mill. bucks to the Cleveland Art Museum, which may be one of the 5 or 10 best in the country? What about spending 4 mill. on the renovation of local Cleveland landmarks? There certainly are enough that probably need it.

I also understand that one of the reasons Lerner never does interviews is that he has a severe speech impediment, almost to the point of being a disability and that is why he almost always only gives written responses, not verbal, to questions. I am not saying he isn't highly intellectual. I think he went to Columbia Law School, but he apparently has severe vocal issues.

Anyone know anything about this?

he should feel at home in England where severe vocal issues are the norm.....

it is speculated that untreated tertiary syphillis is the underlying cause of the widespread speech impediments

I agree.....I think he is a good owner who is trying to hire the right people.

At least he is smart enough to know he can't run the team so he puts people in place and allows them the latitude.

on a side note...that looks like a English estate....gardens, tennis court, croquette lawn at top right....maybe even a few par 3's at the top of the photo around the lake...looks like a bunker to the top left.

First off the Lerners have owned the franchise since 1995.................one would think intelligent questions about the owner would spell the name correctly

The guy is a Brit...they spell things a bit differently...I'd cut some slack in that regard.

I agree that it does look "English", but if you know anything about Hunting Valley or Moreland Hills those areas could have a few such "English" looking estates.
