ClevelandBigDawg
I know it didnt fair the greatest in the Phil Savage era, but at least we had some fun offseasons. We aren't winning right now "building through the draft." Hell, we might as well. There is a minimum spending number, and there are some solid free agents. Let's try to take care of a position on need. Say... DE. Jeremy Mincy and Mario Williams would both be great on our DL. Williams will cost a lot, so Mincy may be able to get us a Manningham or Meachem or something. We may be able to nab Winston or Brown for RT purposes as well. I think we need two WRs anyways so we will probably be drafting one period, but if we get a DE and/or RT we likely wont be drafting any, not at least with any of our high picks. I'm just getting tired of this, "You build through the draft" I agree with that, but you need help from the FA. Unless you're getting 7 rounds of great picks year after year it will take some time before you build a full team, and by that time players get to and pass their primes, and most retire. The average career length in the NFL is something like 3.5 years.
choco
as i posted...just yesterday, the minimum salary doesn't affect this year. it begins next year that we must spend 89% of the cap. did you think building thru the draft would happen in 2 seasons? Of course not, but we have one of the top LTs in the league, if not the top. One of the top 5-7 Centers in the league. Top 10 cornerback. Good young Safety. Pretty Good LB (Jackson). And we are arguably a DE away from one of the top DLs in the league. Everything else is pretty much garbage, and at the most boarder line starters and role players or too young to really tell. I'm just saying signing a couple of players would greatly help this team win some games THIS YEAR.
choco
unless those players signed are worthless.....as is in many a case. signing a couple players does not necessarily mean more wins. if you think it does....well...
SDBrownsFan
I think we need some veterans on D- especially the Dline. If we were going to spend on a big time free agent I can't think of someone better than Mario Williams- he can mentor Sheard (also take some attention off of him and others along the line) and we would improve an area that needs it big time: pass rush. All this talk about WR, QBs, Secondary, Oline- our pass rush still needs some work.
Unsympathetic
If 22 isn't going to be Mike Adams, I agree Lerner needs to open the checkbook - and sign Jared Gaither. The Giants didn't win because of Mario Manningham, they won because they had the best talent at both OL and DL. Who was second? The Patriots. Both also had franchise QB's. I'm just saying signing a couple of players would greatly help this team win some games THIS YEAR. And the Browns are counting on plugging at least 3 of those holes in this year's draft, if not more. It is my personal opinion that a team should count on the players it drafts in Rounds 1-3 to become starters in this league for a 4-5 year period. Now, of course, as we know, that doesn't always happen. But it should. God knows the Browns have compiled some of the worst crap ever in rounds 1-3. It is because of those poor decision that they have not won anything. If you notice, other than the last two drafts, the Browns have exactly 3 starters on this team from the years 2004 through 2009, when, in reality, in my opinion they should have about 10 starters. (I put Lauvoa and MoMass as backups)
