The Browns have waived safety Jamoris Slaughter, the team announced today.

The Browns selected Slaughter in the sixth round (No. 175 overall) of last year’s draft. He spent his entire rookie season on the practice squad.

Three games into Slaughter’s senior season at the University of Notre Dame, he suffered a ruptured left Achilles’ tendon. He was bothered by several leg injuries last season with the Browns.

You're right. It's laughable that Lombardi couldn't even manage to make it three years as GM of one of the worst teams in the league.

 

I didn't forget about Hardesty or Marecic or Asante. Usama Young was a free agent acquisition and started 19 games over 2 years for the Browns, registering 87 tackles, 8 passes defended and 4 interceptions. He wasn't a Pro Bowler by any stretch of the imagination but he surely wasn't a terrible free safety.

 

As a comparison, Tashaun Gipson (who was signed by Heckert as a UDFA, mind you) has started 18 games, registered 86 tackles, 13 passes defended and 6 interceptions...and many analysts have lauded his performance.

 

My point was that Heckert drafted 5x as many players who contributed to the Browns as Lombardi did. In Heckert's first year, he drafted 5 immediate starters with his first five picks (Haden, Ward, Hardesty, McCoy, and Lauvao). In his next year, he drafted 3 more starters with his first three picks (Taylor, Sheard, Little), plus he grabbed Jordan Cameron in the 4th round. The same Jordan Cameron who made the Pro Bowl last season. Heckert also drafted Skrine, who has started for the past 2 seasons at #2 CB and will likely be our nickel this year, in the 5th round, along with Pinkston who will be a depth interior lineman.

 

In 2012, Heckert panicked and shit the bed, drafting Richardson and Weeden in the first year. However, as much as you may hate Schwartz, he has still started every game since being drafted and will start opening day this year. In addition, Heckert drafted John Hughes, Travis Benjamin and Billy Winn in rounds 3,4, and 6, respectively. All of which will likely be on the opening day roster this season.

 

So- looking back, Heckert drafted 11 immediate starters in his three years as a GM in Cleveland. Of the 27 players he drafted, 10 of them are still on the roster (37%) and 3 of them have made it to the Pro Bowl at least once.

 

And none of that is factoring in Josh Gordon.

 

In Lombardi's short tenure, he drafted 5 players. None of them were opening day starters. In fact, they have only recorded 5 starts between the five of them. One has already been released. Another may be released before the end of the offseason (McFadden). Mingo is the cream of the crop and is a tweener pass rushing specialist who could either go the way of Aldon Smith or Vernon Gholston.

 

You seem to take offense to Zombo citing the cutting of a sixth round pick...yet you bring another one up in your counterargument (Mitchell).

 

 

At the end of the day, Heckert drafted one entire side of the ball of starters, Lombardi drafted zero. Heckert drafted 3 Pro Bowlers, Lombardi drafted zero. There are players that Heckert drafted 4 years ago that are still starting, while the players that Lombardi drafted last year are getting cut.
