ATENEARS Posted September 14, 2014 Report Posted September 14, 2014 First we backed up deferring the ball until after the half, with a great defensive stand to start the game (Great start was warranted and key). Followed that up with sustained momentum through most of the first half. Had a bit of a brain fart falling into prevent defense and allowing the Saints to score rather easily prior to the half, but what impressed me is that we didn't panic once losing the lead in the second half. We didn't abandon the run, even when time wasn't exactly on our side. I liked that we at least attempted to create a spark with Manziel, even though the play calling might not have fit the situation. The Saints seemed to have us bogged down mid-way through the third quarter and I thought rolling Manziel out like we were doing with Hoyer in the first half would force the Saints to respect Johnny's running ability and make them counter. Anyhow, the Manziel insert didn't appear to help among the stats but the team did seem to pick back up on the lost tempo after the experience. Huge defensive play and sack by Dansby kept us within a Field Goal. A little luck on the time clock adjustment and perfectly blown coverage by a Rex Ryan defense (Thanks buddy!). We'll take it! Game ball to head coach Mike Pettine, as the team was "in-control" and onboard as a whole all game long. Followed/stuck-to a game plan and out-executed the New Orleans Saints. Well played.
slowburn Posted September 14, 2014 Report Posted September 14, 2014 coaching was exceptional pettine/staff should be proud of a team that played lights out every minute, every single fuckin' play. I can't wait to watch a replay
choco Posted September 14, 2014 Report Posted September 14, 2014 So....the 3rd or 4th choice was the right one? Sure looks promising. At the very least, the game doesn't look to big for them. No TO wasted, decent clock manage!went, scheme and adjustments are there. Pettine is growing on me for sure.
LBC mike Posted September 14, 2014 Report Posted September 14, 2014 I liked the hire from the get go.
Canton Dawg Posted September 14, 2014 Report Posted September 14, 2014 "We got paid today." - Mike Pettine
D Bone Posted September 14, 2014 Report Posted September 14, 2014 Liked that Pettine didn't chase the missed extra point by going for 2, and liked even more when he punted on the second to last drive instead of going for it. Didn't like Shanny's play calling in the 1st half. Too many boots and roll outs, and way too many passes on 1st down. He did a much better job in the second half, and got Crowell more touches too................ Dude is our best back.
Tour2ma Posted September 14, 2014 Report Posted September 14, 2014 Not sure how high the "Best Coached" bar has been in a while, but definitely a well-earned, first-win, game ball for Pettine... And it's only going to get better.

Rookie head coach mistake
D Bone Posted September 14, 2014 Report Posted September 14, 2014 but the situation was a no brainer should have gone for 2. Rookie head coach mistake SMH... Nope. Not at that point in the game. You are the rook..........
TopDawg31 Posted September 14, 2014 Report Posted September 14, 2014 SMH... Nope. Not at that point in the game. You are the rook.......... do the math situation calls for 2 time of game should not play into it
Tour2ma Posted September 14, 2014 Report Posted September 14, 2014 Agreed. You don't go for 2 there. Thirded...
TopDawg31 Posted September 14, 2014 Report Posted September 14, 2014 if we get two we are tied at 24 not fighting to keep from losing by 1

I think deferring to put your strongest unit on the field first was a good move. Defense stepping up right away and making a statement and they sure did. That first quarter showed significant pressure on Brees, would have like to see more the balance of the game. I think the Manziel reasoning was twofold, one to cater to fans and two to set up a future trick play when needed. Overall how awesome to win, I was happy they were kicking 17 rows up on our end of the field for the win!!
thenew23 Posted September 14, 2014 Report Posted September 14, 2014 Agreed. You don't go for 2 there. Agreed. PAT was the wright call.
D Bone Posted September 14, 2014 Report Posted September 14, 2014 if we get two we are tied at 24 not fighting to keep from losing by 1 This won't change your mind, but it's all about W H E N to go for 2. There was still 1/2 a game to play, and you don't turn down the sure point. Had there of been less time on the clock, like say 9:00 in the 4th, then yes, go for 2. This won't change your mind, but just know in this case you are wrong.
