Browns: Barkevious Mingo not being asked to rush passer

Good article and I agree. I know that many people are trashing the guy, but he is doing his job.

I was pretty shocked that the Browns often put him on the the strong side and Kruger on the weak side. He isn't going to put up good numbers over there and a bunch of people are going to rip on him, but he is a pretty good player.

I will say that if it were my team, I would utilize Mingo more as a pass rusher. He has the quickness that the others lack.

From ESPN 10/1:

What's for lunch?: Under the last Browns regime, Barkevious Mingo was drafted sixth overall for the role of coordinator Ray Horton’s top pass rusher. The day Mingo was introduced, his mom was in attendance and offered up the money quote when she said, playing to the euphoria of the day, “He likes to eat quarterbacks.”

In Mingo’s second NFL season, his appetite has changed. Or, rather, it has been changed for him.

In this age of defensive substitution, Mingo unofficially is now an outside linebacker “coverage specialist.”

Mingo missed Game 2 against New Orleans with a shoulder injury. In his other two appearances, the stat sheet shows Mingo with eight tackles. Nothing else there, no sacks, no turnovers forced.

“We haven’t had him in a lot of situations where he’s had an opportunity to get sacks,” said coach Mike Pettine. “We’ve used (Jabaal) Sheard and (Paul) Kruger more in passing situations. Again, it falls back to not reading too much into statistics and a guy filling the grade sheet with plusses. That’s what’s most important to us.

“There are times where a guy won’t necessarily have production, but they’ll cause production. That comes with doing your job. That’s a big emphasis for us this week. Our mantra in all phases is do your job and good things will happen.”

When Mingo was drafted, Pettine was defensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills, and the story told was that he and Jim O’Neil – then Buffalo’s linebackers coach and now Pettine’s coordinator – tried to sell their team on selecting Mingo. The Bills traded down and eventually took quarterback E.J. Manuel (ouch).

Pettine said he likes Mingo better in coverage because he is a little better at it than Kruger or Sheard.

“I see him as having the ability to do both (cover and rush),” Pettine said. “We evaluated him over the other two in his drop ability. It’s close with Mingo probably being the best, Kruger second and Jabaal third as far as ability to drop. The Sam linebacker is a very important position for us from a coverage standpoint. That’s just the way we decided to proceed with that rotation.”

I find it strange why the coaching staff is asking him to drop more into coverage than rushing the passer. I won't discount his athletic ability being greater than Kruger or Sheard's - but that doesn't always translate to being an instinctive cover linebacker.

The kid has done nothing but have his hand in the ground and scream off the ball at opposing QB's nearly his entire football career. The staff is essentially asking him to do the opposite of that this season. If you've played the game at any position, you know that going from a down rush end, to a stand up linebacker is a bitch. Toss in having increased coverage responsibilities and I can't blame the kid for not wowing anyone.... Yet.

Better at coverage than Kruger or Sheard would not exactly be a ringing endorsement of anyone's coverage ability...

Of course it isn't. However when your best option at OLB dropping into coverage is a kid that's only in his second year and the position - that presents a very serious issue.

Just when you think Mike Lombardi's draft record can't get any worse we have the 6th overall pick in the draft playing as a part time cover linebacker in his second year.

Zombo

--Leon McFadden already cut by two teams in his second year, the third should be coming soon ...

Wait, did the Browns cut McFadden? I thought he was still with us here. (and I guess we are shed of Gilkey as well?)

Is it fair to say that Armonty Bryant, so far has been the best pick of that draft?

(though, remember, the Browns twice traded picks in that draft for picks in this year's draft......who did we get with those two picks? I believe either Kirksey or West has to be one....who else?

And what about Jamoris....not Webster... Slaughter? He ain't here. I don't see where he has been picked up by anyone.

Where I see that Gilkey is at least with the Buccaneers.

They cut JS outright. way early to, during camp I think. They tried to place Gilkey on the ps, but he was claimed off waivers. I think we wished he wasn't, but knew he would be.

Bitonio certainly made him expendable....plus I see on the roster they have backup OL in Paul McQuistan and Vinston Painter on the regular roster, plus Ryan Seymour on the PS.

Though....did Gilkey get in and help the Bucs who picked Gilkey up beat the Squibs Sunday?

I think they had both Gilkey and Oniel Cousins on that OL, making it even more hilarious that they beat the steelers.

we got a 3rd and 4th rounder, which got packaged around a bit. I think one got parlayed in to West though, yes. I *think* the 4th was from Indy, which would put it at number 26, which I *think* is where we got Desir.

I think they may have traded that 4th rounder they got to package with another move up trade....or maybe for something next year.

We traded:

9 + 145 for 8 - Justin Gilbert

26 + 83 for 22 - Manziel

106 + 180 for 94 - West

215 for BLT's 6th rounder next year

Our own picks were:

Bitonio, 2-3 (35 overall)

Kirksey 3-7 (71 overall)

Last year's picks were:

83 - from Steelers - part of the manziel package

127 - from Indy - Pierre Desir

OK, so we had the 26th pick, and we traded it along with a third rounder for JFF.

Honestly, I hope he becomes worth it. That third round pick could have been the WR we could use. A Donte Moncrief or John Brown

New Flash folks . . . we all need to cut Mingo some slack . . . quite a bit actually.

Heard from Grossi on the radio today that Mingo has been playing injured . . . and will be for the rest of the year.

Kids' shoulder is major time screwed up, he can't even raise one arm, which pretty much explains his poor tackling.

The fact that he's still playing and manages to gum things up as well as he can speaks volumes.

The guy's got heart and is a gamer.

We all (me included) need to give guy some support.

That he's even able to contribute at all speaks to our injury/depth, and his abilities.

You can hear it here for yourselves at around the 2:40 mark, plus some other interesting stuff :

Actually, this will pull up the Hey Tony segment, you need to select the Fact of Fiction segment @ 2:40 to hear it

Thought he actually looked good today. Put big pressure on Glennon first play of the game. Got his first sack of the season. Was around the ball more than he's been virtually all season.

Here's a mention of Mingo and his shoulder issue from this morning's Hey Tony :

Hey Tony: Two-parter here. Desmond Bryant, prior to his heart thing last year, I thought he was a real force. This year he seems like just another guy. What gives? B Mingo, how much is the shoulder keeping him from getting off blocks this year? My guess is more than we know. Thoughts?

-- Craig, Atlanta, GA

Hey Craig: I would point out that Bryant is being used a little differently from last year’s Ray Horton system, but, in general, I would agree with you. Mingo is having trouble getting off blocks and also from wrapping up on tackles because he is playing with a harness to protect his shoulder. Defensive coordinator Jim O’Neil said Mingo probably will not be healthy all year.

I thought this was his best game.

Not exactly high praise... but relative to his other games, probably true.

2 tackles 2 assists... He chased down Glennon an couple times. His sack kinda fell into his lap.
