Let's Talk Concerts / Performers

Recommended Posts

Interested to learn a bit more about posters by asking them a few (more) questions about music.

I don't want to ask for your favorite band but the band you've seen the most times and the approximate number of times you've seen them (a real sign of loyalty).

Although there might be a huge overlap between your favorite band and the one you've seen most often, variables such as age, year, distance, etc. might have made it impossible for you to see them live. As an example, I would have loved to see Buddy Holly but obvious circumstances prevented that from happening.

Then, what concerts / performers have you seen - maybe - only once, but you cherish the opportunity to see them that one time.

PS As I think through this, I wonder how much of this is 'dated' for me. Bands I've seen many times, now make my scratch my head as to why I liked them so much. Again, life and circumstances come into play but I do feel foolish about some of them.

In alphabetical order and off the top of my head (more or less)

Allman Brothers (but never with Duane Allman) (6)

Grateful Dead / Jerry Garcia Side Projects (10)

Little Feat / Lowell George one-week & tragic solo tour (10) (2) They are the band I miss most. After 1979, they became lame. The 'head' died and the body had no direction

NRPS (see Greatful Dead above) (8)

Bonnie Raitt (5)

Springsteen ((9) Going back to the days where I couldn't GIVE away tickets I had (literally). During the Wild and Innocent days.

Once had a Guitar Player magazine that listed the, "Top 100 Working Bluesmen". Living close to Northampton, MA, I made a pretty good dent on that list (and my pocketbook and my brain cells).

People I've seen only once (or twice) but really found the shows memorable for a variety of reasons

Moody Blues Never a record buyer of theirs but was amazed as they played hit after hit at the small Paramount Theater, Springfield, MA. Opener: Dion

Bob Dylan (Rolling Thunder Review circa mid-70's and once as the 'main act' with Willie Nelson (1st) and John Mellencamp)

Bob Marley (MSG). Had tickets for a show at UMASS but he decided to die first. How dare him.

GFOS, himself, at a small bar in Sunderland, MA with Southside Johnny and the Jukes at a table in the corner.

Van Morrison at the Boston Music Hall 1975. I had the top ticket at $6.50. Decided against seeing him, again, two years ago as the tickets started at $125

Willie Nelson 'nuff' said'

Rolling Stones See Willie Nelson above

Muddy Waters at Clarky's, Downtown Chicopee, MA 1979 with unknown Nicholette Larson as opener. She was a kid.

Stevie Wonder (when he was advised NOT to perform at the Boston Garden during the mid-70's busing riots. He played just for that reason.

Stevie Ray Vaughn

Passed on Elvis and Janis Joplin Sooooooooooooooooo stupid

I traveled to the Pontiac Silverdome to see Pink Floyd. We sat on the 40 yard line right next tothe tractor trailer's in the middle of the field. A lot of the lasers and speacial effects came from those trailers and it was AWESOME to say the least.

I also saw Metallica open for Ozzy at the old Richfield Colesium. It was before Cliff Burton past away. Master of Puppets tour. Man were they GREAT!!!!!!

Seen the Grateful Dead 3 times . Saw Black Flag once, that was a crazy show!!

I went to a Weezer, Stone Temple Pilots, and Staindshow back in the early 2000's.

Saw Kenny Chesney and Tim Magraw at the Browns stadium also Zac Brown 2 times, only cause the wife likes country

I would guess I have seen 300+ shows dating back to AC/DC For those about to rock tour of late 1981. I was 11 and went with my older sister, her boyfriend and his dad.

I assume you mean bands of national note.

I have seen Vince Gill the most. He plays a Christmas concert here every year to support a charity we support, so I guess I have seen him 8-9 times. Twice in a regular concert and the rest the charity deal.

I have seen Merle Harrard 3 times. He is playing Riverbend (local music festival) this summer and have my tickets to see him a 4th.

Alabama three times, though one was when they were still a regional band out of Ft. Payne, Ala and they played a local club. When I saw them I thought they were really good and wondered why they were playing a club like that.

On a local flavor, I have seen Confederate Railroad dozens of times, but that was when they were a local band kicking around the local pubs. I never saw them once they charted a few hits on country radio and moved more or less to the big time.

As far as rock bands, none more than twice that I can think of, and that would be a fairly big list. Elton John, Paul McCartney, The Doors, Bob Seeger, Chicago to name a few of the more notables.

I saw the Youngbloods, The Who 3 times with Keith Moon, Simon and Garfunkel, Jethro Tull, Ian Anderson, Lenny and the Squigtones, The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Asia, the Moody Blues twice, actually once but I'm going back soon, Alice Cooper 5 times, Chuck Berry, Procol Harum twice, the Kinks, Taj Mahal, crosby Stills and Nash, Steeleye Span, The Chieftains, Tommy Makem and the Clancy Brothers, Bruce Springsteen, Lesley Gore, Eric Clapton, Gabriel, the Producers,Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr,not to mention the choir, the raspberries and Eric Carmen etc..

When I was in Easy Street we opened for the Michael Stanley band, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes 3 times, Artful Dodger, Head East, Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Gowan, 38 special, and we're joined on stage by Pat Travers (boom boom out go the lights) in Cleveland and Dallas. Also after his show at Public Hall meatloaf stopped in to the Cleveland Agoura and SAT in with the band for nearly an hour.

Given my age, as much as anything, I currently enjoy music in the so-called "Folk/Roots/Americana" arena. Most of it can be found on local College Radio - not usually with student 'DJs'. The students lean toward 'Indie', etc. more than I'd like.

"Rock and Roll" today doesn't do much for me - especially in a large or stadium setting.

Give me a club or a theater setting and a musician that focuses as much on the 'songwriter' side of the Singer/Songwriter scale, any day.

It is amazing how much talent there is out there and how much of it emerged due to technology that extends the music beyond the the monopoly companies and puts more in the hands of the artists, themselves, - and the public..

I recently saw Richard Thompson in a new 'theater' in Hartford and have tickets to see Robert Earl Keen this month and Tommy Emmanuel (sp) finger-picking guitar player extraordinaire at the same venue.

My wife wants to see Vince Gill so we will be going in the Spring. I have my sights on an outside (small venue) show with honky-tonker Dwight Yoakam this summer.

Brother Steve, check out wwuh.org (University of Hartford) any Tuesday from 6-9 AM for 'Celtic Aires'. I think you'd like it.

I will say this, I have only left 1 show because the band was AWFUL and that was Aerosmith. The were here in 1988 with Guns and Roses and GnR blew them off the stage. After GnR opened the show, Aerosmith came out and the SUCKED. we left after 3 songs.

From the early 70s on I guess I've seen just about everyone.. Including Zeppelin.. Sammy Hagar/Aerosmith/Boston was a good show but one of the best I've seen was TSO a few yrs ago in Tampa. Robin Zander showing up was just icing on the cake.. B)

And the Who 3 times with Keith Moon. And James Taylor.

PS Eric Clapton had Mark Knopfler on second guitar and if I'm not mistaken Phil Collins on drums.

  • 3 weeks later...

I once got to see Alice Cooper. He hung himself on stage. Then he cut his head off with a guillotine.

After 200+ shows, nothing tops that

The lasers and video at Pink Floyd were better, but the ACTUAL stage stuff was unbeatable
