Browns schedule visits from Jets defense players

March 4

Cleveland Plain Dealer

"The Jets are landing in Cleveland today.

Free agent linebacker David Bowens and defensive lineman C.J. Mosley -- who were reserves on coach Eric Mangini's defense with the Jets -- are scheduled to visit the Browns.

Bowens, 31, was a backup at inside and outside linebacker in two seasons under Mangini. He started five games last season in place of injured David Harris and had four sacks and one interception. In New York, Bowens was considered a respected team leader. He played previously with Denver, Green Bay, Washington and Miami.

Bowens had arthroscopic knee surgery after the season. The Jets released him after their coaching change to create room for a spending spree that has so far netted linebacker Bart Scott and safety Jim Leonhard from the Ravens and cornerback Lito Sheppard from the Eagles.

Mosley, 25, started three games in three years for the Jets. He had 17 tackles and 1.5 sacks as a rotational player at right end last year. Mosley was a sixth-round draft pick of Minnesota in 2005.

The Browns, who have not signed any players in the first five days of the free agent signing period, hosted two cornerbacks Tuesday.

They were Jabari Greer of Buffalo and Chris Carr of Tennessee.

Greer, 5-11 and 180 pounds, is an ascending player who has received interest from Tampa Bay, Detroit and New Orleans.

Undrafted in 2004 out of Tennessee, Greer started 23 games the past two seasons for Buffalo. He had two interception returns for touchdowns last year before missing the last six games with a sprained knee.

Carr, 5-10 and 180, has been a reserve cornerback and return specialist for four NFL seasons, the first three in Oakland. Last year with Tennessee he was fourth in the NFL with a kickoff return average of 28.1 yards and 12th in punt returns (10.1 yards)."

Does anyone think we have a chance at signing any of them considering the way ManKok has gone this offseason? More importantly, does anyone want to sign these guys from the Jets? They didn't even start in New York. Bowens is a little older and I think shouldn't be signed. Mosley would be all right pick-up for nickle and dime situations. Greer is gone but I think that Carr could be a solid pick-up. Odds are however, that ManKok will build mostly through the draft.

I think we'll sign a vet LB fairly soon. We'll want someone who knows the system to back up whatever LBs we draft. Bowens played solid last year and did his job as a backup.

I think Mosley has some upside and is young. He has learned the system and hits the mold of a 3-4 DE nicely. Nothing brilliant to his play but if he is a hard working guy and sticks to his assignments...he could be nice depth.

I like both of these guys if the price is right..they offer a certain amount of backup and even upgrade to two troubled positions.. bowens would be capable at ilb or obl and could present a real challenge for a couple of our current lbs mcanient and or wimberly for the start...

Mosley without a doubt would present a big challenge to robaire smith for the starting left end job if he can play it...

I would have to think that Mangini and Kokinis (because of his pro personnel background) have looked very hard at the roster and look very hard at the play of guys he may have slacked off of quit at the end of a 4-12 season and is looking for depth to replace those guys. Just might be a reason he isn't interested in some of our FAs.

A guy like Bowens is an overachiever, a high motor guy who leaves it all on the field. He's the kind of guy that wouldn't quit on a team even if they were losing. These are the types of guys Mangini wants to bring in before he brings in the draft picks. Carr is another overachiever and all he asked the Titans was for a chance to compete as a corner. He wants more playing time. He isn't asking for a starting position, he's asking for an opportunity to compete for a job.

Mosley is a not very athletic 3-4 DE, again with a high motor and plays hard every play. Limited by athletic ability but a guy that won't quit.

These seem to be the type of guys that Mangini likes as depth guys and guys draftees can emulate.

I really like what this organization is trying to do and I like the type of players they are bringing in. I think you will see more second tier players like this coming in in the weeks to come as they try to rid the team of guys like S. Smith.

I've never seen any of their games, but 4 sacks and an INT for a backup seems pretty good.

I'd work them out, see what they got. Anything has to be an imporvement over our backups

He was also special teams captain. They already know what he brings to the table, he was with Mangini the last two years. High character guys taht play full out and give 100% in practice and in games. Players this team desparately needs. Get rid of the pussies and prima donnas, bring in the blue collor guys that know what their job is will lay it on the line for you.

Good points Ytown! He's not gonna cost us outrageous cake while he'll add depth, experience and the attitude we need for STs.

Shep, Paris Lennon... really? He is soft and would be destroyed in a 3-4.

I like all 3 of the re-jets Bowens can be the versatile player Williams is supposed to be. Barton is the block eating sure tackler we need ay SILB. Mosley would give us a rotational run support DE in case Williams hasnt matured into the full time starter. My favorite part about these guys are they are role players and not out to show off but do theyre job.

Another guy id like to get is Abram Elam he would fill in for the over-rated Sean Jones and would cost 1/3 of the price.

We're negotiating with both guys and I expect they'll land here. Paris Lenon seems like a serious thing, too.

Lenon is small but with a better OLB and SS he could be effective as a SILB especially in coverage which would free up Jackson to roam some. I don't know enough about him to know how he could handle himself in traffic and shedding blocks. I do like Bowens but he isn't a starter. I would prefer a combination of Bowens and Barton at ILB over Lenon and Bowens.

My thinking is if we get Bowens, we dump Williams or try to convert him to a WOLB because he can't play ILB in this system. Williams did do well as a WS pass rusher at the end of 2007 and I thought then they would try to convert him to rotate with Peek.

At some point we have to see where Bell fits in. would love to have him working to high motor guys like Bowens and Barton. He could learn a lot from them.
