THE BROWNS BOARD

Danny Shelton and PFF

It is what is I guess... He's young and has lots to learn. But then again, for some reason, despite the revolving management staff we have had since 1999, our draft picks have absolutely fucking blown (not counting Thomas and Haden), so it wouldn't surprise me if he is out of football in 2 years...

Just saw this and wondered what people think so far. . .

Danny Shelton has played high, peaks in the backfield & gets driven off the ball. Currently ranked 56th out of 68 DT/NTs by PFF.

DT is a weird position in the NFL based on scheme-it's far from my area of expertise but it's also a hard position to rank too. Like with any rookie though, gotta give it a little while.

I have faith in Pet and the D line coaches to correct his mechanics and get from him exactly what they want, an inside guy who does the heavy dirt work without flash. Every team needs a blue collar guy who shows up every day with his lunchpail expecting nothing more than ataboys from his surrounding teammates who get the benefits of his presence in the middle.

Should also point out that Danny is only one of 2 rookie DT/NT 's that are starting.....Dannys played 80 snaps and no others are even close to that.....

So, while his score may be a few tenths lower than some others, he is playing and they aren't........

I would also point out that our DE's....Randy Starks and Jamie Meder are ranked #10 & 11, respectively.......and a LARGE part of that is because Danny is occupying the line, whilst they do their thing....

Lets not get too caught up in tackle and sack counts when deciding who's playing well and who isnt.....

Considering Meder's snap count that's impressive. On his sack, though, that was a really well designed play. Whoever was the OLB came in and effectively bull-rushed his guy in to Meder's, Meder went around the outside and the OL couldn't keep up.

Des 'hands to the fucking face almost cost us the game' Bryant on that list? Hughes?

yep....Bryant is way down the list, but still has a fairly average score of -1.3....and hughes is even at 0....so far so good....

Based on Mingo's great track/sack record as a pass rusher? I think Mingo's career will trendsetting, as a new type of LB whose main function is covering the new type of hybrid, ex basketballing TEs like Cameron, almost full time.

Of course Mingo has no record as a pass rusher...he has never been allowed to do that role on a consistent basis. He has certainly flashed on occasion.

That is why he was brought in at #6 overall.....to rush the passer. Let him do that....and if he really cannot, kick him to the curb. but hell, give him a chance first.

But he's the cover guy.....

Orchard was brought in to rush....along with Kruger.....and thats about the only thing Kruger CAN do well.....

So, when we turn Mingo into a rush specialist, who do we use to cover???...cause it aint Kruger or Orchard or Solomon....

Whichever ILB between Robertson and Kirksey is not on the field?

Cuts into their rest, but both are decent in coverage.

I'd like to see them try rushing Mingo up the middle instead of rushing him outside a few times. Reason being is if Shelton occupies a center and guard, and the ends and/or OLB occupy the tackles, it leaves Mingo one-on-one on a blocking running back and I like his chances a lot better again an RB than an LT. Plus with his height, he can get those paws up and really mess with the passing lanes.

So can you explain to me what they've been doing with Kruger so far in terms of playing him like a weak side cover OLB'er.

I dont see that....though I would say that every once in a while, they are gonna get caught with their pants down and he'll be forced to cover....

Last year he played 550 passing downs and rushed the QB 485 times against only 65 in coverage...

This year, so far, he's rushed the QB 52 times out of his 70 pass plays.....

Dansby Mingo and Kirksey are covering the highest percentage of time...while Kruger(and AB) just rush...

Conversely, Dansby has only rushed the QB 7 times.....while covering 66 passes......and Mingo has covered 50% of his plays....

Interesting....I would like to see it as an experiment. I can only assume that the DC doesn't think that Mingo can match the inside muscle and thus won't try that.

I mean....hell, Mingo is in the same position as Johnny get your gun......we gotta see if he can do what he was brought here to do......chop wood.
