TUPELO, Miss. – A man who's known for flying a 4-foot-long Mississippi state flag on his car has been accused of bombing a Walmart in Tupelo because the chain stopped selling the flag, the police chief said Monday.

The explosive made a loud bang but did no damage when it was thrown early Sunday into the 24-hour Walmart, Police Chief Bart Aguirre said Monday. He said bomb technicians reported that the package held enough explosive material to damage the store if it had been assembled differently.

Marshall E. Leonard of Tupelo, a northeast Mississippi city of 34,500, was jailed on a charge of detonating an explosive, and police were searching his car and home, Aguirre said.

Walmart is among retailers that stopped selling merchandise bearing reproductions of the Confederate battle flag — which makes up the upper left section of the Mississippi state flag — after the June 17 killing of nine black worshippers at a church in Charleston, South Carolina.

Some Mississippi cities and institutions also have stopped flying the state flag.

"He's a strong supporter of keeping that flag flying. ... This is his way of bringing attention to that," Aguirre said.

Leonard did not yet have an attorney who could comment Monday, Aguirre said. His bond hearing probably will be held Tuesday, and the judge will appoint an attorney if Leonard, who lives alone and has no job, cannot afford one, the police chief said.

Aguirre says Leonard allegedly lit a newspaper-wrapped package and threw it into the store around 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

"An employee was sitting in the vestibule taking a break," Aguirre said. "He told the employee to run — that he was going to blow the place up. He throws this package into the front entrance of Walmart. He flees and the employee flees."

He said Leonard's silver Mazda is bedecked with stickers of the Mississippi state flag and the Confederate battle flag, and it sports a big state flag on a flexible pole. Leonard was arrested about 2 a.m. for running a red light near the Walmart, Aguirre said.

I missed the "Confederate" flag in the story - it appears it was the current flag of a current state in our union.

But hey!! Pile on!! Headlines!! Clicks!!

The MS state flag has the Confederate flag in the corner, which is the main controversy surrounding their state flag at the moment. But it was mentioned a lot in the article.

is there something wrong with displaying a state flag?

The whole controversy with the flag is related to the Confederate flag being embedded in it. At least, the symbol we generally recognize for the confederacy today.

This guy is a loony and used the recent Confederate flag controversy as an excuse to bomb a Walmart.

Not much more to it than that.

And he threw the equivalent of a firecracker into a department store and did no damage and injured no one. Just an ass hole.

1) Not true: "the package held enough explosive material to damage the store if it had been assembled differently."

2) <cal_Impression>I bet he was just doing a dry run for some other bigger thing he's planning</cal_Impression>

Chris, that made no sense - it WAS a bomb. The "clock" was harmless.

If a Muslim did the same thing - he would also be a nutjob sob.

Hey, it was steve's comparison. And to be fair, it's quite close. In both cases, there's explosive material that failed to detonate, not through want of trying but lack of brain power.

1. Define damage the store. Cracking a tile is damaging the store. Putting a hole in drywall is damaging the store. Seems like a bit of camouflage.

Thank you

The difference is irrelevant ultimately. There's 1 flag primarily used to remember the civil war, the battle flag - it's the one that caused all that controversy earlier this year.

Referring to it as Confederate flag or Confederate battle flag would generally be referring to the same thing nowadays.

Nope. You're not correct.

I'm not sure what your point is really.

That's the flag that's been used for many, many years to remember the confederacy and honor fallen soldiers.

The the guy here is a Mississippi flag backer and a Confederate flag backer by association (while having both on his car) - which he used as a reason for the crappy bomb, really he's just a nut job though

The confederacy had a few flags, but none really recognized today except the above.
