Yes it was, he could not use his name because he was still under contract with a label he wanted away from.

Sure, he was under contract with Decca Records out of Nashville and they would not publish his music, but because he was under contract with them they would not let him record under his own name, so he had to come up with a name for the band.

......but that does NOT answer the question. They could have come up with any name.....The Axe Men or something.

The question is: why did they select "The Crickets" as that name.

The Gipper's Weekly Rock n Roll Trivia: Buddy Holly Fever....since I went to the Buddy Holly Center in Lubbock Texas recently:

Answers

1. What is Buddy Holley's real first name?

Charles Hardin Holley is his full name.

2. How old was he when he died?

Just 22

3. Who gave up his seat on the plane in Clear Lake Iowa and as a result survived to a much older age?

Waylon Jennings.....who lived til age 65, dying in 2002

4. What reason did his band give for naming themselves "The Crickets"

They were inspired by a New Orleans R&B band named The Spiders to come up with an insect for the name of their band. They rejected "The Beetles" as they thought those were ugly bugs just made for stomping on, and The Grasshoppers as too long. They chose The Crickets because Buddy thought that crickets made their own sweet music when they rubbed their legs together and that is what he wanted his band to do, make sweet music.

5. The song "That'll Be the Day" was inspired by a movie/actor. What movie/actor?

The Actor was John Wayne, the movie was The Searchers where Wayne says the line "That'll be the day" about 5 times.
