Obviously you have not watched Jack's tapes yet.

Why do you say that? I've watched a decent amount of tape on him - as much as on Bosa and other non-QB players. I don't see anything wrong with him, aside from his injury.

Admittedly, I don't pay as much attention to OLB/DE as I do QB...but Jack checked all the boxes for me. Smart, instinctual, athletic, meets the runningback in the hole (a huge plus in my book), solid first step, takes good open field angles, doesn't get caught handfighting, leverages his lower body strength.

Granted, he's a little undersized for the 3-4, but I think he'd be a great rush LB and an instant improvement over anyone on our roster.

Sorry, but we were discussing Jack Shit. ;):P

"I caught one Hoppy. Should I throw him back in?"

Combined bigger than I expected.

Agree he's be an upgrade and an instant 3-down OLB, but I don't see an impact player. His edge rush from tape I've seen just isn't there... not as a steady diet anyway. More of an "element of surprise" rusher...

Might end up at ILB... at least in dime packages. The kid can cover... and is great in space.

GAME OVER!

New Draft Home (Scores)

Your score is: 8204 (GRADE: A-)

Your Picks:

Round 1 Pick 16 (DET): Carson Wentz, QB, North Dakota State (A+)

Round 2 Pick 1: Noah Spence, DE, Eastern Kentucky (B+)

Round 2 Pick 7 (JAX): Jaylon Smith, OLB/ILB, Notre Dame (B+)

Round 2 Pick 15 (DET): Derrick Henry, RB, Alabama (A)

Round 2 Pick 16 (N.O.): Kevin Dodd, DE, Clemson (A)

Round 3 Pick 6 (JAX): Michael Thomas, WR, Ohio State (A+)

Round 4 Pick 1: Tyler Matakevich, ILB/OLB, Temple (A-)

Round 4 Pick 7 (S.F.): Joe Haeg, OT, North Dakota State (A-)

Round 4 Pick 12 (L.A.): Tyler Higbee, TE, Western Kentucky ( B)

Round 4 Pick 40 (COMP): Scooby Wright III, ILB, Arizona (A-)

Round 5 Pick 2: Charone Peake, WR, Clemson (B+)

Round 5 Pick 33 (COMP): James Cowser, DE/OLB, Southern Utah (B-)

Round 5 Pick 34 (COMP): Matt Ioannidis, DT, Temple (A-)

Round 6 Pick 1: LaQuan McGowan, OG, Baylor (F)

Round 7 Pick 2: De'Runnya Wilson, WR, Mississippi State (A+)

I call this the trade down fest.

That would give us, in my opinion, two starting ILB's in Matakevich and Wright, two starting OLB's in Smith and Spence, a starting DE in Dodd, a starting QB in Wentz, a starting RB in Henry, a starting RT in Haeg, a starting #2 WR in Thomas, a receiving TE in Higbee, a big-bodied but shifty slot in Peake, a special teamer/rotational OLB in Cowser, a rotational DT in Ionnidis, and a redzone WR threat in Wilson.

And then a giant of a man in McGowan, just because I wanted to see how he'd fit in an NFL jersey. I bet they'd have to rip the sides.

This is my "no-trade, take what's there" draft...and I would personally be ecstatic with it.

By my evaluations, each one of these players could be a starter for us by the end of, say, year two...with the one exception being Ridgeway. And, of course, the WR's can't ALL start, but I think Peake, Robinson and Wilson could each separately be a #2 for us. And...if Gordon ends up failing out, either Peake or Robinson have the tools to be a #1.

Personally I'd fire you as my GM... ;)

  • Wrong QB
  • Jaylon Smith definitely is a two-year plan kinda pick. Personally I'm very wary of him at #32.
  • Whitehair is not a power run game OG.
  • Not feeling Tyler M as my bargain LB...

Has any player fallen farther thru the 2.5 months this thread has been open than De'Runnya Wilson???

It's a good thing you're not in charge, then.

There is no "wrong QB", as hard as your boner has grown for Goff recently. Both are equally talented, both are equally cerebral.

Shying away from Jaylon Smith because he's not an immediate starter is ridiculous, IMO. He's a top 5 pick without the injury, and he'll come back from it just fine.

Whitehair was a value pick and his intangibles outweigh his (perceived) lack of ability as a power run blocker. And I'm not considering him for guard, I'm considering him for center ;). Smart, team captain, four year starter, shorter arms, strong grip, tremendous body control, understands the geometry of the position- he's a prototypical center. Give him a year of lower body NFL conditioning and put his hand in the dirt more than 5 plays a game and he'll be just fine.

Matakevich fits the mold of what I like in players - intelligent both on and off the field and relentless in their effort. He's a Luke Kuechly in everything except athletic talent. To me, it's worth seeing if he could overcome the skill deficit, because he's a very smart, instinctual player. At the very least, as a rotational ILB, we won't be losing any battles by him being out of place.

Not doubting the talent that was there. And maybe he makes a full recovery to fulfill his promise, but nerve damage can end a player's career.

He may never play again, let alone start. And if he plays, he may not be the same player. Those are the possibilities I shy away from, not time.

Defense:

A defense of Buckner, Shelton, Nassib along the line and Smith, Brothers, Davis, and Dodd as LBers? That's ALMOST as realistically perfect a draft for our defense as I can think of (granted, a 16 pick draft is a little unrealistic, but the point remains that this is a closer to achievable scenario than landing two top 10 picks ). (Bolded names drafted rookies.)

The name of the game for this defensive draft is intelligence, drive, work ethic and versatility. Each one of these players is either mentally or physically capable of playing two positions, which gives Horton the added ability to shift between 3-4 and 4-3 without sacrificing too much in terms of matchups.

- Buckner IMO will be a fantastic 3-4 DE in both the run and pass game, he's a true three down, 5-tech DE that can hold his own in the running game but possesses the athletic ability to be a factor in passing situations. Further, he's strong enough and plays with enough leverage and strength to bump inside to a 3-tech DT should we trot an OLB down, similar to how both Watt is utilized in Houston at times. (This is also why I believe Buckner to be a better fit for us defensively than Bosa, personally.)

- Dodd is more of a traits prospect simply because he has a lack of playing time, but I think he'll be an above average . He plays instinctually, which I believe could temper his learning curve greatly. Dodd is on the light side for a 3-4 DE (essentially the exact same size as Bosa or Seattle's Michael Bennett), he's more built for a 4-3 DE role, but its not inconceivable that he could play a 3-4 OLB for the many of the same reasons that others are making for Bosa. I just happen to like the combination of Buckner and Dodd more than the combo of Bosa and Spence, personally.

- Smith is a natural pass rushing LB and even if there was nerve damage and he returned at 75% of the player he was, that's still an every down OLB and an improvement over our current stable. He'd be a great Jack OLB if we just blasted him at the QB every down, but his coverage skills will also allow Horton to scheme up some new wrinkles. I wouldn't mind if he sat out for all of 2016 if he had to, just to make sure that knee is 100% healed.

- Jenkins, conversely, is a traits prospect who is a great Sam prospect due to his size/strength combo and his ability to set the edge in the run game. As a rotational player with upside, he's pretty hard to beat.

- Brothers isn't as athletic as I'd like to see, but he's a quality interior backer with great instincts and I personally value that trait for an ILB moreso than physicality.

- Nassib is in the same size range as Bosa/Dodd and his size/speed projects him as a 4-3 DE or possibly 3-4 OLB, however his style of play makes me think he'd be a better 5-tech DE in a 3-4. He doesn't possess the finesse needed to play OLB, but he's a relentless pass rusher who just tees off on tackles a la Bosa, but can be had in the third. He also plays like he's closer to 300 than 275, and I think he'd be a great look in the third as a possible LDE (over RT) starter. With a year of NFL conditioning and strategy refinement, he could develop into a longtime starter IMO; he just needs to learn to stop crashing upfield. He's a great value pick because he was such a late bloomer, had he put together another year of solid performance he'd be flirting with a late first round pick IMO.

As for offense -

- Boyd is a great option for us to draft as WR2, IMO, as he possesses the upside to be a low-level WR1 if Gordon doesn't return. Scouting reports reveal that he's very competitive and rather intelligent football player, he's played both RB and WR for Pitt. Boyd is a tremendous talent with above average body control and reported "vice grip" hands (a la OBJ) and is a relatively polished route runner.

- Lynch has been discussed ad nauseum. He's a project QB and was a steal in the third. In real life he won't be there, I just couldn't pass that up.

- McGovern is a three year starter and has started at RG, RT and LT. Per his scouting report, he's an absolute workhorse and has multiple weightlifting records at Mizzou. Watching him, he possesses some skills that project him to be a lower-level tackle, but his hand technique and sheer overall power make me really consider him as an interior lineman, possibly as a RG. I think his career arc could be similar to Erving's in that he could be a utility guy in his rookie year, but then ultimately make the permanent move inside, but he's Bizarro-Erving in terms of physicality. He could probably take on a stud NT like Ngata in an Oklahoma drill and win 3 of 5 as a rookie, he's that strong.

- Prosise is a good complement for Duke. He's an early down back with the size potential to be a workhorse, but needs time to develop a better feel for the game. His BC vision is so-so, his hesitation on zone plays borders on indecisiveness, but still attacks between the tackles on most gap plays. Needs to improve his pass protection, however. I think he's just a better fit than Crowell, personally.

- Wilson is just a lock 7th round pick because he's taken a huge pre-draft fall. He's a high-pointing redzone threat, like a poor man's Alshon Jeffery. If he's available in the 7th, you HAVE to take him just because of his potential to score. He could come in and instantly contribute 5-10 plays per game lined up as a WR2 in the redzone. He likely won't be anything other than that, but the potential is there to develop over time into a rotational WR.

Those 5th and 6th round guys are high-character, upside guys that i just don't want to go into detail about. Of the four, Ioannidis could find success as a longtime 3-4 NT, he has the right build and the right mentality to grind out a decent NFL career.
