THE BROWNS BOARD

Browns "BPA" Draft

Suomi

Recommended Posts

Drafting BPA is the mantra echoed by many so-called pundits. Since the Browns can arguably benefit from increasing their talent level across the roster, I thought it would be interesting to see what a Browns draft that employed the BPA strategy would look like. The overall position in the draft where each player is selected - indicated by the number in parentheses - is also their actual overall prospect ranking (BPA rankings are according to CBS.com's 2017 NFL Draft Prospects Ranker):

1.01 (1) Myles Garrett, DE, Texas A&M

1.12 (12) Mitch Trubisky, QB, UNC

2.01 (33) Kevin King, CB, Washington

2.20 (52) Chris Goodwin, WR, PSU

3.01 (65) Chris Wormley, DT, Michigan

4.01 (108) Carlos Watkins, DT, Clemson

5.01 (145) Shaquill Griffin, CB, UCF

5.31 (175) Damonte Kazee, CB San Diego State

5.37 (181) Sam Tevi, OT, Utah

6.01 (185) Jon Toth, C, Kentucky

6.04 (188) Hunter Dimick, DE, Utah

This draft isn't bad. The first three rounds are actually pretty darn good. However, this draft doesn't provide any help for one of the Browns' glaring needs: FS and SS. Since the Browns didn't help themselves in this area during free agency, this draft would arguably leave the Browns with a less-than-ideal defensive backfield.

Here's my re-draft, reflecting more of a needs strategy plus my own opinions. For example, I don't think that the Browns should draft a QB early, if at all - I would be prepared to hand the job to Cody Kessler and see what he can do with a much better offensive line in front of him. Also, I do think that the Browns need to improve their defense in a big way, and since this draft is supposedly full of quality defensive players I would recommend that the front office concentrate on drafting for defense.

1.01 (1) Myles Garrett, DE, Texas A&M

Garrett is the 1st ranked player. Don't. Over. Think. It.

1.12 (12) OJ Howard, TE, Alabama

Howard is the 6th ranked player, so getting him here is a bit of a steal. He would be a fantastic asset for Kessler, offering him a reliable target over the middle that would be a matchup problem for most defenders. To allow Howard to be available at #12 would require that a couple of QB's and surprise selections to go ahead of him. If he's not available, I'd possibly over-reach and select Gareon Conley (ranked 36th) - who I think is going to develop into a great NFL press corner.

IF HE FALLS: Malik Hooker, FS, OSU (7th ranked player)

2.01 (33) Kevin King, CB, Washington

King is the 33rd ranked player, so this is no stretch. I like this pick here, primarily because of his versatility. He's big (6'3") with long arms and has played as a starter at both safety and corner at Washington. If Conley was selected with pick 1.12 I'd still go King here and turn him loose as a FS.

IF HE FALLS: Zach Cunningham, ILB, Vanderbilt (25th ranked player) - one of my favorites

2.20 (52) Josh Jones, SS, North Carolina State

Jones is the 61st ranked player. He's 6'1" 220lbs and ran a 4.41 forty at the combine.

IF HE FALLS: Budda Baker, FS, Washington (40th ranked player)

3.01 (65) Marcus Williams, FS, Utah

Williams is the 77th ranked player. Playmaker. With Josh Jones could team up to make a very formidable back line.

IF HE FALLS: Adoree' Jackson, CB, USC (48th ranked player)

4.01 (108) Carlos Watkins, DT, Clemson

Watkins is the 108th ranked player. Strong at the point of attack, can be a good contributor helping to hold rushing attacks in-check (a big fatal flaw of the Browns).

IF HE FALLS: Montravious Adams, DT, Auburn (81st ranked player)

5.01 (145) Ryan Switzer, WR, UNC

Switzer is the 159th ranked player. Quick in his cuts, good hands, good potential as a slot receiver. Think Julian Edelman "light".

IF HE FALLS: Bucky Hodges, TE, Virginia Tech (114th ranked player)

5.31 (175) Zane Gonzales, K, Arizona State

Gonzales is the 197th ranked player. Top-rated kicker. Holder of six FBS records (most all-time). He kicks bombs. Get him.

IF HE FALLS: Corn Elder, CB, Miami (153rd ranked player)

5.37 (181) Jadar Johnson, SS, Clemson

Johnson is the 187th ranked player

6.01 (185) Marquez White, CB, FSU

White is the 189th ranked player

6.04 (188) Elijah Lee, OLB, Kansas State

Lee is the 190th ranked player

Rankings vs. Mocks... always an interesting comparison.

... Drafting the BPA strategy... according to CBS.com's 2017 NFL Draft Prospects Ranker:

1.01 (1) Myles Garrett, DE, Texas A&M; 1.12 (12) Mitch Trubisky, QB, UNC

2.01 (33) Kevin King, CB, Washington; 2.20 (52) Chris Goodwin, WR, PSU

3.01 (65) Chris Wormley, DT, Michigan;

4.01 (108) Carlos Watkins, DT, Clemson

5.01 (145) Shaquill Griffin, CB, UCF; 5.31 (175) Damonte Kazee, CB San Diego State; 5.37 (181) Sam Tevi, OT, Utah

6.01 (185) Jon Toth, C, Kentucky; 6.04 (188) Hunter Dimick, DE, Utah

Here's my re-draft:

1.01 (1) Myles Garrett, DE, Texas A&M; 1.12 (12) OJ Howard, TE, Alabama
2.01 (33) Kevin King, CB, Washington; 2.20 (52) Josh Jones, SS, North Carolina State

3.01 (65) Marcus Williams, FS, Utah

4.01 (108) Carlos Watkins, DT, Clemson

5.01 (145) Ryan Switzer, WR, UNC;5.31 (175) Zane Gonzales, K, Arizona State;5.37 (181) Jadar Johnson, SS, Clemson

6.01 (185) Marquez White, CB, FSU; 6.04 (188) Elijah Lee, OLB, Kansas State

While CBS's ranking states it is "powered by NFLDraftScout", it's ordering is not identical. Here are its results with identical picks in bold...

1.01 Myles; 1.12 Mitch

2.01 (33) Kevin King (CB) WSH; 2.20 (52) Fabian Moreau (CB) UCLA

3.01 (65) Cooper Kupp (WR) Eastern WSH

4.01 (108) David Sharpe (OT) Florida

5.01 (145) Jamaal Williams (RB) BYU; 5.31 (175) Damontae Kazee (CB) San Diego St.; 5.37 (181) Sam Tevi (OT) Utah

6.01 (185) Jon Toth, C, Kentucky; 6.04 (188) Hunter Dimick (DE) Utah

Bottom line... pure BPA drafts are impossible to construct because no ranking/grading is fine enough to order 253 prospects, let alone 750. Can't even order the top 32 and the guess work increases with every round. So teams cluster them because they can't tell them apart. Then they let need, positional importance and number of viable alternatives in later clusters dictate the pick.

Basically what you seemed to do in your tweak...

Doesn't mean it's not fun to see how rankings would dictate our draft. Here's the NFL.com result...

1.01 Myles; 1.12 Taco Charlton (DE) Michigan

2.01 (33) Charles Harris (DE) Missou; 2.20 (52) Adam Shaheen (TE) Ashland

3.01 (65) Quincy Wilson (CB) Florida

4.01 (108) Roderick Johnson (OT) FSU

5.01 (145) David Sharpe (OT) Florida; 5.31 (175) Keion Adams (OLB) Western Michigan; 5.37 (181) Eddie Jackson (SS) BAMA

6.01 (185) Brian Cox, Jr. (DE) Florida; 6.04 (188) Robert Davis (WR) Georgia St.

Going to stop the "pure BPA" exercises now... before "our drafts" get any worse. However, it is worth noting that the NFL.com "grading" clearly orders prospects using a grade that includes more than the two-significant places "grade" they post. It's unknowable whether they round off to the two places or truncate, although I suspect the latter, but if we simply take the two-digit ties as prospect clusters it would be interesting to see our various drafts.

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2017/tracker#dt-tabs:dt-by-grade/dt-by-team-input:cle/dt-by-round-input:7/dt-by-grade-input:1

The picks aren't numbered, but there are 25 per page.

Here's mine:

1.01 Myles... He stands alone at the top of the class with a 7.6... 0.8 clear of the field.

1.12 Here we have three 6.3's to chose from including Taco (DE) and David Njoku (TE). My pick: Hasaan Reddick (OLB) Temple

2.01 (33) Eight 6.0's to choose from: Robinson (OT), Mixon (RB), Bolles (OT), Tim Williams (OLB), Engram (TE), Kamara (RB), White (CB) and Harris (DE). What a revolting development... even with the expected expanding cluster size as we fall, I really don't like any of the options let alone love one.

My (reluctant) pick: Tre'Davious White (CB) LSU

2.20 (52) Cluster size jumps to 22 with a grade of 5.8. There are a bunch of loves in here including both my Safeties and my fav OL. I have to take one of the former... Pick: Marcus Williams (FS) Utah

3.01 (65) Into the 5.7's here... 23 of them. Two prospects jump out at me: Obi (SS) and Butt (TE). My pick: Jake Butt (TE) Michigan

4.01 (108) Here we have 32, 5.5's in the mix. I like a few. My Pick: Anthony Walker, Jr. (ILB) Northwestern... my thumper.

Next come the 5.5's... 54 of them... enough to cover all the remaining picks. Slim pickins overall, but more than enough likes to complete my draft.

5.01 (145) Chad Kelly (QB) Ole Miss.

5.31 (175) Eddie Jackson (SS) BAMA helped me take Butt in round 3.

5.37 (181) Howard Wilson (CB) UH

6.01 (185) Ryan Glasgow (DT) Michigan

6.04 (188) Shaquill Griffin (CB) UCF

The south was gray during the civil war.

Are you speaking of the Great Yankee Invasion of 1861-65? ;)

I'll have to "Grant" you one thing. His landing the union army on the east side of the Mississippi south of and surrounding/starving out Vicksburg to choke off supply lines from west of the Mississippi was one of the greatest military feats in history. Not bad for an Ohio boy.

We just erase that. :P

PS-I have $212 in Confederate Bills mounted and framed hanging in my little library originally given to me by my thievin' Yankee in laws. As we say down here, "Hang on to your confederate money boys, the south shall rise again."

Its a place called "The United States of America".

The south didn't "rise again" until natural gas prices for winter heating drove a lot of people south. It was the northerners who went south that caused it to "rise". That and air conditioning.

Hey... you started it.

When I make the I-20 trek to bounce grandkids on my knee, Vicksburg is a must-stop, welcome center. Beautiful view of the Mississippi from the heart of the Confederate gun placement area that controlled the River.

Do you consider Dallas "the south"? I guess, maybe, since it is in Texas...which was a "Confederate" state. Though it is not "south" like Houston and San Antone.

(fyi, I think I told you...my brother used to live in Kerrville....before JMZ was even born, and my daughter lives in SA)

I remember going to a casino on a Riverboat there. I believe it was on the Yazoo River? (and, of course I toured the battlefield. See my thread in the Barbershop on National Park units)

I've been there and I have been to Shiloh where my great, great uncle was shot thru both legs as a member of the 8th Texas Rangers Cav unit and left for dead. He was taken to the first ever MASH unit on the battlefield and his life was saved by Union surgeons without removing legs since the bullet did not hit bone. He was eventually exchanged at Vicksburg and made his way back to Austin. Interesting stuff huh?

Dallas is absolutely the south. The crown jewel of it in fact.

More like the sphincter of the south. No, more like the navel. It is not fucked up, except perhaps traffic. Nothing wrong, just nothing appealing about Dallas/Ft. Worth. Houston either. San Antonio and Austin much more interesting towns.

I did a recent tour of towns in Texas.

El Paso a bit "third world".

Odessa/Midland/Lubbock a bit blah.

Parts of Amarillo are like a throw back to the 40s/50s with old route 66 going through there. Kinda cool in a retro sense.

Abilene is a "pretty little town". Perhaps not the prettiest I have ever seen, but nice.

Waco is not as Whacko as the name implies. Kind of middle of the road.

Galveston was kind of cool, the parts I saw of it. Though for the 2 days I was there this past winter break it was completely shrouded in fog the whole time.

See my "Gipper's Guide to America" thread in the Barbershop for a ranking I have done of North American towns.

Traffic in Dallas is great compared to Austin and Houston. Great city.

Yes, it is...

Can't explain it but get a very weird vibe off of some Civil War battlefields. Gettysberg, twice as a kid and again as an adult, but they were nothing compared to two I had driving through Manasas Battlefield Park going Dulles to DC and back on a business trip. And on the way to DC I'd never noticed I was driving by it.

Maybe the Buddists are onto something???

Don't know about that "crown jewel thing (*cough* Charleston, SC *cough*), but Dallas is a helluva lot more "southern" than Houston.

Both were barely 30-yo when the Civil War broke out.

You may be right. Austin has become awful. And I suspect the same about Houston, though the last couple of times I went through there I was able to avoid rush hour, so I made it through pretty well both times with no tie-ups. I just see very little in Dallas that is of any real interest. The most interesting place is the assassination location, and boy, if that is the best thing you got going for you...well, that kind of tells it all.

My best friend proposed to his wife in Charleston. They are only mid-20's but are set on retiring there lol.

I'm not sure that I'd say Dallas is more southern than Houston. Houston brings some of the same rich oilman in cowboy boots-type guys and adds the diversity and culture you see in other parts of the south. It's an uncommon opinion, but I like both.
