As Cleveland Browns minicamp comes to a close, GM Andrew Berry never stops working. Whether it making changes to the roster or addressing the salary cap, Berry is constantly making adjustments.

TE Harrison Bryant came into the final year of his rookie contract with a fully non-guaranteed contract. With Jordan Akins added to David Njoku, Bryant’s spot on the team’s 53-man roster was up in the air as the team transitions to more receiver sets.

Bryant’s roster spot became even more tenuous when he earned “prove performance escalator” status this offseason. Bryant’s contract jumped up from just over $1 million to over $2.7 million. Still, his salary was not guaranteed with Berry able to cut him at any time without impacting the salary cap.

Instead, according to Brad Stainbrook with The OBR, Bryant has agreed to a new contract that will guarantee the tight end $1.75 million. This is a similar move to what the team did with D’Ernest Johnson last season.   ---->  CLEANED IT UP FOR YOU,   mjp  ---->

The move saves almost $1 million off of the team’s salary cap. Before the move, the NFLPA has Cleveland listed with just over $18 million in cap space.

A shrewd move for both sides as Bryant ensures his spot on the team this season at a salary higher than his contract was prior to the PPE while the Browns save some salary cap space and lock in the top three at the tight end position.

Trying to make some cap space this season for another addition, because why else would they do this?

Maybe.

Or maybe just some insurance.  You never know if someone is going to get hurt in camp or early in the season.  Having the money to be able to sign someone or trade for someone is important.

money for hopkins ?

maybe

That, or adding a quality DT like Matt Ioannidis and/or another RB.  Despite his durability issues, Minnesota's Dalvin Cook is about to be let go to pursue another NFL team.  Maybe he'd love the role Karim Hunt had here (while it would lessen the wear and tear full time duty had on his 210lb frame). I know Miami is interested.  I also wouldn't be surprised if other teams in our division would be interested.  Just thinking outload which may sound like a lot of noise pollution to others....

More than happy with our RB room as-is, so would not like to see us spend there. We are likely to pass more, and would like to see Chubb getting a higher percentage of running downs. Wouldn't mind seeing what Ford or even Hall bring to the table in a game. If Chubb were to get injured, we can always see who's on the market then. RB value is plummeting, as they are being cut left and right.

DT on the other hand... There is no such thing as too many big guys up the middle!

These are the type of jobs that don't get a lot of press/air time..https://www.si.com/nfl/browns/news/browns-to-bring-in-jim-washburn

Washburn has followed Jim Schwartz with Philly & Tennessee's defense..

that's another good camp eye on this defensive front

Jordan Elliott seemingly guarantees his roster spot     Browns 53-man roster can pencil in another in Jordan Elliott

Following up on their report on Bryant, The OBR is also reporting that DT Jordan Elliott has agreed to a similar new contract with the Browns:

His base salary is taken down to the league minimum. He then got a signing bonus of $490,000. Then he has some incentives based on how many games he plays which can be a maximum of $200,000.

In his deal, the base salary and signing bonus is fully guaranteed which means he went from nothing guaranteed to $1.5m guaranteed.

---------

I was kinda' thinking that Bryant & Elliott wouldn't make the team.
