NFL Salary Cap next year: 255.4

2024 Browns cap hits per player

Current Browns total for 2024 as shown in that second link is 297.5 -- Dealing with this gap is where Berry makes his salary.

What is actually going to happen? Even @tiamat63 would lose money making prop bets on Browns salary cap moves this offseason.

I'm going to try to keep this thread updated with what gets us under the cap by the date with drafted rookies signed.. so the goal is about 242 for non-rookies.

Denzel Ward's change which is linked elsewhere makes 2028 a void year at 2.9 and converted 14.2 to signing bonus. Ward's cap hit in 2024 is now 12.1, 0.1 less than his 2023.

NFL Cap: 255.4

2/29 Browns : 287.7

Current Available 2024 Salary: [255.4 - 287.7] = -32.3

Because Browns current available cap is negative 32 million, look for every player you can name to go through this.

The NFL cap is one of the most incomprehensible things in sports, if not life. Spotrac does a great job of calculating it however.

@Unsympathetic your calculation seems to miss the '2023 rollover cap'

A RUMOR DOES NOT CHANGE THE SALARY CAP

well there really is not a whole lot going on at the moment. unless you want to do a mock draft ? so calm down, as there really was not another thread to put that at. So if you would like to come up with a different thread for that sort of thing, Please by all means  do it.

I'm just waiting for free agency to start. I don't imagine the Browns being super aggressive but I think they will look for o-line and linebacker. Would like them to get a deal done with Flacco.

A RUMOR DOES NOT CHANGE THE SALARY CAP

Today is March 8th and Free Agency starts Wednesday March 13th; but FA contracts/negotiations and discussions with teams can begin on Monday, March 11th.  I was hoping we'd have more than 1 veteran with a gigantic contract agree to defer some of their money received to another calendar year like Denzel Ward did. None of them will go broke doing so.  Right now there isn't any spending money to compete in free agency with unless some of the players step up here at the last minute.

Berry did an incredible job last off season.  However, good draft drafting at rookie salary cap restrictions for 5 year contracts can sure get you a healthier salary cap.  For example, the difference between drafting Watson and being the 2nd team to pay him for the projections off of his back to back Pro Bowls and playoff appearances.  It's time for Berry to hit more home runs like JOK in the draft. Long story short, it needs to be a balanced approach between good drafting and good use of free agency.    1 year contracts don't build continuity because they are very expensive band aids that only help for a short period. It was tough typing that after the fun FA brought us last year until I remind myself how many of those guys have contracts that already expired here. This draft for the Browns doesn't begin until the back 3rd of round 2.  They gotta nail pick #54.

This is just overcaffeinated nerves thinking out loud; and that kind of noise pollution might get me arrested for disturbing the piece...

Browns restructured Jed Wills' contract, gain over $10 mill in cap space.

Thanks Dutch!  Looks like the good news leaked about 2 hours after my post this morning.  We need more because the competition heats up Monday.  Here's what I just Googled up:

The team made one move Friday, restructuring offensive tackle Jedrick Wills' contract, according to NFL Media. The team converted $10.44 million of Wills' $14.175 million fifth-year option to a restructure bonus, according Cleveland.com, which saves that much on the cap.10 hours ago

Not intended to high jack team cap space topic. But stumbled across a interesting list of 2023 NFL Coaches contracts/ranking $$..

Where does 2 time coach of the year land on list?

Top 10 highest-paid NFL coaches 2023

COACH TEAM ANNUAL SALARY
1. Bill Belichick New England Patriots $20 million     Not coaching in 2024
2. Sean Payton Denver Broncos $18 million
3. Pete Carroll Seattle Seahawks $15 million     Not coaching in 2024
4. Sean McVay Los Angeles Rams $15 million
5. Mike Tomlin Pittsburgh Steelers $12.5 million
6. Andy Reid Kansas City Chiefs $12 million
7. John Hargbaugh Baltimore Ravens $12 million
8. Kyle Shanahan San Francisco 49ers $10 million
9. Josh McDaniels Las Vegas Raiders $10 million     Not coaching in 2024
10. Mike Vrabel Tennessee Titans $9.5 million    Not coaching in 2024

Who are the lowest paid NFL coaches 2023?

COACH TEAM SALARY
Matt LaFleur Green Bay Packers $5 million
Robert Saleh New York Jets $5 million
Zac Taylor Cincinnati Bengals $4.5 million
Mike McCarthy Dallas Cowboys $4 million
Kevin Stefanski Cleveland Browns $3.5 million   last on HC list

The Cleveland Browns brought in HC Kevin Stefanski and GM Andrew Berry to work together as a collaborative unit in 2020. It is important to note that Stefanski was hired first then joined the search that ended up with Berry as the general manager.

Despite that, Berry does not report to Stefanski. Despite their titles, Stefanski does not report to Berry.

Both head coach and GM report directly to the ownership group led by Jimmy Haslam.

Kevin Stefanski's 4 season record is 37-30 .552% with a 1-2 playoff record.  5 year contract expires January of 2025

The interesting thing here is 2 of the 3 lowest paid Head Coaches are employed by the teams in Ohio - that have drastically improved their frequency of making the playoffs fwiw.

That will probably change.  I think Taylor is on his first contract as well.  Both will probably get in the 6-8 mil range.  If I was Haslam I would extend him 3 years now.  That gives Stefanski 4 years of security.  After that, wait and see, looking to keep giving 3 years deals going in to the 4th season if warranted.

I think so too!
