The Cleveland Browns are expected to announce as early as Monday that they have hired Philadelphia's Tom Heckert as their new general manager, league sources tell ESPN.

Heckert, whose father, Tom, worked as a scout for the Browns in the 1980s, could be hired once the Eagles complete their season. They play the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC playoffs on Saturday. Heckert reportedly was going to interview for Seattle's GM job this week but backed out.

New Browns president Mike Holmgren interviewed Heckert, who has been a GM since Jan. 2006 with the Eagles, on Wednesday. Holmgren met with Seattle pro personnel director Will Lewis on Friday, but sources say the GM job is Heckert's.

NFL Network reported Friday night Heckert would likely be announced as the team's GM on Monday.

It's possible both Lewis and Heckert could wind up in Cleveland's front office.

During his introductory news conference, Holmgren hinted that Cleveland's hierarchy could be revamped.

"We talked about change and some of that is just restructuring," he said. "Sometimes you have five people changing the light bulb. We're going to look at everything and try and streamline things, get good people to do it and work hard."

I've heard he is a favorite but can he even interview before his team departs from the playoffs?

He already has interviewed for the position

According to Adam_Schefter on January 5th: Browns ARE busy today. They're discussing their GM job with Eagles GM Tom Heckert, who is in Cleveland today.

Not only can he be interviewed while the Eagles are in the playoffs but i have heard that he can be hired as well. Supposedly it could happen after the Eagles game today.

The answer is yes- and that goes for any position, but the team he's employed by must give him permission to interview. The Eagles easily could have said NO. :)

PS The Rooney rule is pretty much BS. The Browns had to bring in Lewis, even though they had no intention of hiring him as GM. It's mighty handy to have Jim Brown hanging with the team, Hey Jim, how'd you like to be GM, president, running backs coach, etc?

Does anyone know what Heckert is like as an exec? I've always felt that Philly was much like New England is that they didn't typically break the bank for free agents and didn't let current players hold them hostage. Realize that this could mean that there will be a "no waves" approach to free agency and we'll just have to be okay with that.
