  1. I know, I know, I know: The outcomes of the games are meaningless. And a lot of the players you see will be selling insurance when the season begins.

But I don't care. I still love it. I am looking forward to tonight and tomorrow. I love this time of year. AND, SOME players who ball in the preseason games DO end up being good. I remember watching Dak Prescott a few years ago and predicted he was going to be a decent QB.  I love the NFL. And it's been a long 6 months. Celebration time, come on.

Think Gipper nailed it- there's going to be plenty of FA running backs come cut time....

Duke bitched his way out of town. Like Baker said, you're either on the train, or you're not. Duke didn't want to get on board.

To be fair, Duke only wanted out after he found out Browns were shopping him; he said if they don't want me, I don't want to be here. I think that's fair. Plus they signed Hunt. Those 2 events is why he wanted gone. He is pretty good and he won't make jack his next contract if he doesn't have some touches. I bet he does quite well in Houston.

Jimmy should have recognized it, considering he's a master of fraud.

I suspected Hue was phony, but after just 1 episode of Hard Knocks, I for sure knew he was.

I just have no idea what their thinking was to bring Hue back after his 1-31 run. Not to mention, when he talked to Dorsey it was so apparent he was so full of hubris and ineptitude.  Oh well, that's history.

Am not a believer that Wylie can't coach with 38 years of experience doing it..Now, it did take 17 coaching jobs to get where he's at.. Could it be true? maybe? Are we still paying him? IDK. but if we are? it beats pounding the pavement  FUxK.gif

Not paying him; his contract was ended, they just chose to not offer him a new one. He left that part out when interviewed about it.

These were the players of my formative years, my baptizing into Browns fandom. I know most of them pretty well and will pick and choose nuggets of interest for some of them.

Kevin Mack: one of my earliest memories of a player that dealt with a drug suspension. Cocaine l believe. And l recall when he came back from the suspension he played like a beast, like he had something to prove.

    ----------------------------------------

Didn't he run over one of the better Steelers of those days? Woodson? I recall a video of Rod saying Mack was one player who he was afraid to tackle. And Rod was no Dieon Sanders; he liked contact and tackling. But not Mack.

Bernie Kosar: love that guy. My personal gold standard of what a good Browns QB should look like since l don’t remember the ones before him. At one point held the record for consecutive passes without an Int. Does he still? And man did he look like a goofy mofo when he ran with the ball.

    ----------------------------------

Sipe was the only Browns' QB who I recall who was decent before Bernie. His #'s were nothing special for these days, but he used to pull out a lot of wins in the last 2 minutes.

Michael Dean Perry: lil bro of the fridge. My recollection is he had a wicked first step and could time the snap well. I remember plays the ball was mid air to the QB snd he’s splitting Olinemen on the way to the QB.

    -------------------------------

He had a nice burst and was a disrupter. Better than more famous brother.

Frank Minnifield: Mighty Minni my aunt called him. Dude was good.

Webster Slaughter: part of the best trio the Browns had in my lifetime, threatened only by the group we have now. I work with Webster’s cousin Ernie. Real nice guy, and plays guitar.

Eric Metcalf: lightening in a bottle. Damn he was fun to watch when he was going good.

Tommy Vardell: Touchdown Tommy Vardell. The high hopes we had for him. I seem to recall he was a Christian Science guy and it was a big deal when he had to settle for western medicine fairly early in his career when he got hurt.

Kevin Mack: Great 80s RB, had a 1000 yard rushing season with Byner in his rookie season of 1985, got busted for cocaine during the 1989 season.

Earnest Byner: Great all-around RB in the same era as Mack, I always remember him being dirty with his jersey untucked. Sadly remembered mostly for his fumble in the '87 AFC Championship Game.

Bernie Kosar: When Cleveland was a punchline, Kosar orchestrated a way to get to Cleveland. Career derailed due to injuries.

Michael Dean Perry: Very athletic DT who was a far superior player to his more famous brother.

Hanford Dixon: One of the best CBs of the 80s, came up with "Dawg Pound".

Frank Minnifield: Probably a notch below Dixon in talent, but still a great corner.

Webster Slaughter: The most dynamic WR of the Kosar era, I remember him painting his shoes orange during the '89 season.

Eric Metcalf: Dynamic playmaker who was a highlight machine. Never will forget his two punt return TDs to beat the Steelers.

Mike Johnson: Quietly one of the best LBs the Browns have ever had.

Leroy Hoard: Had a really good run in the playoff season of 1994. Made a ton of big plays that season.

Tommy Vardell: Tried hard, but was pretty much a bust.

Eric Turner: Helluva safety, Rest in Peace.

Tom Cousineau: Ohio State LB who was an absolute bust for the Browns.

Spot on, Dutch. And Kosar did get them out of the doldrums. The Bernie-Marty era had them right there, 2 AFCC games. Could have won both.

  7. So, I can't force anyone not to look up these old players on the net, but I am curious how much how many of you know about these past Browns. I'm doing this off the top of my head.

What do you recall about these past players?

    Kevin Mack

    Earnest Byner

    Bernie Kosar

    Michael Dean Perry

    Dixon

    Minnifield

    Webster Slaughter

    Eric Metcalf

You only need to see that as of today he is unemployed and not working for any other team. That tells you a lot about how much you can trust his words or his football IQ.

But he sure could spin whimsical tales and hilarious one-liners....that dude thought he was the real cat's meow. I didn't find him that funny.

On Undisputed this AM they were asking if Freddie's open honesty was hurting the team. I thought him being a straight shooter was his main brand coming in?

A nice guy for sure but a dinosaur the Browns needed to move out the building

Now with more of the story coming out...Wylie was fired while laying in a hospital bed, his daughter told him she heard he was fired on the news, so he is definitely bitter and I don't put much stock from criticisms from bitter people. And he really was beyond old school. He seemed more interested in yucking it up than anything else - you know, the fat, jolly guy who likes his own jokes more than any one else does. I don't condone the way they let him go, but I can't put too much weight in his takes.

It’s not like he was throwing a $50,000 crack party. Instead of giving the colon types the finger, he chugged a beer. Same message

Yea, seriously, it's not like it's in the same area code of a Johnny Manziel. If Bakes wins, he is gonna be a legend in the Land.

  11. That's what today's sport shows are calling Bakes after that video of him biting/chugging can of beer.

The reference is to the movie "Smokey and the Bandit" and they are saying his actions are causing "smoke" to be all around the Browns.

I don't think it's a big deal, but I do wonder what he was thinking. I mean, whatever, I guess. If he wins he can shotgun a beer every time he's on camera and no one will care.

Your point is if his show is about ratings and getting paid more it's okay to just report just the percentage of truth that paints Baker in a negative light. Do I need to be born in the new millennium to understand how wonderful this type of reporting is?  No thanks!

    Nice straw man argument.

That's 50% of the story some people prefer to cling to. Not that 2 wrongs make a right; but the other 50% was the same guys he did that gesture to didn't shake his hand at the pre-game coin toss.  That's very disrespectful too - but which disrespectful act got more juice for Cowherd?  The one from the Heisman Trophy Winner he preferred to dwell on.

When a story broke that Baker visited a terminally ill little girl and later spoke at her funeral - guess who didn't want that getting any attention?  And when Baker and his fiance (at the time) delivered Christmas gifts to kids - guess who stays away from reporting these things?  Colin Cowherd.

If he's only going to report controversies while not reporting the things I mentioned - that tells me and others in here he's a hack with a shadey agenda.

I know. It's called "ratings." Listeners/viewers don't tune in to hear about x-miss presents. His agenda is to have ratings, and he keeps his job and gets paid more. Baker can prove him wrong by winning and acting decent. I think he's well on his way. And, by the way, I did not agree with Colin on how Baker treated Hue after the Cinci game; I didn't think Bakes did anything wrong, and could have been even a little more unfriendly and not been out of line. Hue was a phony jackass and didn't deserve any respect from Bakes. He was perfectly justified in dissing the fraud, Hue.

BINGO!    I don't see Baker starting the fights either Mike.  He just finishes them.  The kid's a winner!

That may be. But the whole crotch grabbing and all that, I'm just saying I understand he's not for everybody. But I can't wait to watch him play in 2019.

The additon of Sheldon Richardson and Vernon have the Browns D-Line in the top 5 discussion. Add that to Larry Ogunjobi. DLine is the strength, imo.

I would rank our corners and secondary above the linebackers with Ward, Mitchell, Carrie, Greedy, D. Randall, and Eric Murray. That is a LOT of talent in the secondary.

I wouldn't expect much out of the rookie LBs right away, however; they are stepping into a welcoming situation with a bolstered defense.

DL is solid. CB very decent. LBs only mediocre. But why do I get the feeling the D will be better without Williams freaking out all the time?

  16. Say what you will to diss Colin, but he makes more correct predictions than any sports talking head I know of. He DOES try to stir the pot, but who doesn't in that business? You have to if you want to keep on the air and get paid. And I believe Baker will prove to be a very good QB, but let's not act like he is perfect. You can easily see how he rubs some the wrong way.
