THE BROWNS BOARD

mock draft thread

Recommended Posts

I'm really hoping for Clemmings falling to us @19, but with his measurements (loooong arms, large hands), I'm almost certain that won't be the case.

Hey Tour2ma, question: why yes to Peat and no to Collins? Peat hasn't really impressed me this year.

collins stock rose yesterday. peat was gassed after the 2nd drill. i'd be happy with either one.

Kevin White, please. 4.35 and a badass 10/20 yard split.

some people got him going to the raiders at 4 or the jets at 6.

I would hope that the F.O. would be looking into trading one of our young runningbacks, either West or Crowell for Adrian Peterson. Draft the best available OL with our first pick, then another shiny weapon, whatever is left with our second rounder. Hopefully Max Williams will be available in round two... although if he looks like he might go early we might have to think about using that second pick on him...

You're a fucking idiot.

I had Marpet in the 4th round, I believe with my mock? If he's still on the board there... take him. IF we somehow come up with additional picks, I'd be not hesitant to grab him in the mid to late 3rd.

That guy will beat out any backup on the OL we have on our roster. Fits perfect in rounds we can go get him but his stock just went up, hope he's there..

Hey Tour2ma, question: why yes to Peat and no to Collins? Peat hasn't really impressed me this year.

Game film I watched... Peat was outstanding. Collins was not... in fact he was pretty bad. Simple as that.

I saw Collins at LSU, then a superior senior bowl as the best OL out there and then again today at the combine. And after what I saw today and made up my mind he was the best (along with Fisher for his speed and lateral movement), the pros on NFL Network indicated Collins had just placed himself in the top 10 if not the top OL taken this year. Guy really has some pop to him.

First, didn't every one look great against A&M? ;)

Collins measured better than I expected. I will watch more tape on him, but he's my #8 OT ATM, but would move up if I kicked Scherff to OG as Mayock has. Collins is Mayock's #3 behind 1.) Clemmings and 2.) Peat. I have those two reversed atop my list.

I think back up RG is the perfect situation for Marpet in 2015, but no telling how high he will go now. Possibly late Day 2...

I don't disagree on Peat, but I just think he will be off the board by #12, more so at #19.

This guy must think our f/o is full of idiots if we follow picking Malcolm Brown @ #12 with a later round WR @ #19 and allowing Peat to drop to the Panthers @ #25.

I'd like to point out that not only did Funchess run the slowest 40 of ALL WR's - he was also last in the average 10 yard split.

Once again... No thank you.

Ha!.....why am I not surprised?

Dude is gonna fall like a pass that just hit his hands......

The mid round WR I'm intrigued by is the kid from E. Carolina, Justin Hardy. And my "who's that WR", Combine moment was provided by Chris Conley.

Of the RBs Ameer Abdullah impressed and Matt Jones reinforced my FB conversion vision for him.

Living in the state of N.C. I can tell you J. Hardy and Crowder from Duke our to two best WR in the state. Both our KR and PR specialist. J. Hardy set reception record in NCAA and drops nothing in his area. One weakness judging deep ball and his QB was Shane Carden at ECU. Both guys fit our O if it stays. A Better Hawkins<Hardy. Shane Carden needs help with Arm strength and Arm Rotation( P. Rivers arm hinge). Crowder from Duke can flat out make guys miss with feet and speed on KR and PR. His weakness is ball security. Crowder=Gabe just bigger..

Grossi consolidated a lot of Mocks in an Article today :

http://www.espncleveland.com/common/more.php?m=49&post_id=42841

DANIEL JEREMIAH – NFL.com

- Posted February 25th

#12 – Washington NT Danny Shelton

“Shelton is an ideal fit in the physical AFC North.”

#19 – Arizona State WR Jaelen Strong

“Strong answered all questions about his speed with a fantastic 40 time at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. His ball skills are excellent.”

CHARLES DAVIS – NFL.com

- Posted February 25th

#12 – Alabama WR Amari Cooper

“Cooper is smooth and has big-time versatility.”

#19 – Kentucky OLB Bud Dupree

“Dupree shows flashes of big-time ability. Browns head coach Mike Pettine and his staff will work on getting that out of Dupree consistently.”

SHAUN KING – Yahoo Sports

- Posted February 25th

#12 – Washington NT Danny Shelton

“Shelton is the best player available and he fills a need. After the major logo change (insert joke here) the Browns finally generate some good news.”

#19 – Minnesota TE Maxx Williams

“I fully expect Jordan Cameron to leave in free agency, so TE becomes a major need for the Browns. Williams has rare open field quickness for a guy his size. Williams gives them a better chance to be successful, no matter who starts at QB in Week 1.”

DANE BRUGLER – CBSSports.com

- Posted February 24th

#12 – Kentucky DE Alvin Dupree

“Dupree's length, agility and closing speed stand out on tape and his comfort playing out of a two- or three-point stance will attract multiple suitors. Better yet, his traits translate into production against quality competition, as Dupree is the SEC's active sack leader.

Dupree doesn't come without some red flags. Despite adding 15 pounds of muscle to his frame he must get stronger. His production has come while splitting duties between defensive end in a 4-3 alignment and as a stand-up outside linebacker, versatility some scouts find intriguing, but others question if favorable matchups booster production for the star rusher.

Dupree emerged the past two years in Mark Stoops' highly aggressive scheme that has previously made collegiate stars out of several pass rushers he coached at Florida State, most of whom have struggled to duplicate their success in the NFL.”

#19 – LSU OT La’El Collins

“There are two basic truths evaluators have grown used to when scouting LSU - for one, the team will be loaded with talent. Second, the talent is so rich so that the best players rarely use all of their collegiate eligibility before leaving for the NFL. Unlike many of his former teammates, Collins elected to return for his senior season despite the fact that he reportedly earned a first round grade from the NFL Advisory Committee.

Collins certainly did nothing to harm that grade in 2014, putting forth yet another dominant campaign at left tackle for the Tigers and following that up with a strong performance at the Senior Bowl.

Collins earned immediate playing time for the Tigers as a true freshman, playing in seven games at left guard. He took over the starting position a year later, leading the team in total snaps (846) and knockdown blocks (64.5) while earning Honorable Mention honors from the AP. Collins made the switch to left tackle as a junior, earning second-team All-SEC accolades from league coaches and posting another 65 knockdown blocks despite missing one game (Furman) due to injury.

Collins possesses a square-ish build that makes him appear better suited to guard. His combination of surprisingly light feet, bullish power and competitiveness could earn him Pro Bowl nods. He's quick enough to remain at tackle for power-running teams, which only makes Collins that much more valuable in the eyes of scouts.”

PAT KIRWAN – CBSSports.com

- Posted February 24th

#12 – Iowa OT Brandon Scherff

“NFL scouts value Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz's pupils as they generally play with grit and excellent technique and are as reliable in the passing game as they are when run blocking. Iowa's program has been an offensive line factory since Ferentz took over in Iowa City, but the Hawkeyes haven't had a draft pick at the position the past two years.

That will change with Scherff, a 6-foot-5, 320 pounder who scouts view as the most pro-ready offensive linemen in the 2015 draft due to his size, strength and versatility. Perhaps because of his broad-shouldered, powerful frame, Scherff has been pegged by some as a possible guard-convert. Unlike many of the other collegiate tackles who may be asked to make this move in the NFL, Scherff has already seen action there, starting at left guard as a redshirt freshman in 2011. He slid outside to left tackle in 2012 and other than missing some time due to injury, hasn't missed a beat since, culminating with a spectacular senior campaign in which he was named a consensus All-American and the Outland Trophy winner as the nation's best lineman.

While scouts love Scherff's toughness, technique and power, he isn't considered a blue chip talent who surely will earn a top five selection. Scherff doesn't possess elite foot quickness in pass protection and more importantly, comes with medical red flags after twice sustaining injuries to his right leg that required surgery to correct.”

#19 – Texas DT Malcom Brown

”After signing with the local Longhorns as one of highest regarded prep prospects in the country, Brown emerged as an important cog in the rotation as a true freshman, recording three or more tackles in five of his last seven games. Brown started all 13 games in 2013, lining up mostly at nose tackle for the Longhorns' multiple defensive front and recording 68 tackles, including 12 tackles for loss and five pass breakups. He earned consensus All-American honors and was named a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Award (top defender) and Outland Trophy (top interior lineman) in 2014, recording 64 tackles, including 14 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks over the regular season.

Brown has the size, athleticism and production to warrant early round consideration and projects especially well as a penetrator in a 4-3 alignment rather than taking on two-blockers as he was often asked to do at Texas.”

PETER SCHRAGER – Fox Sports

- Posted February 23rd

#12 – Louisville WR DeVante Parker

“Parker's name was a bit lost in the Kevin White show last week in Indianapolis, but he had quite a Combine performance, too. He ran a 4.45 40-yard dash and jumped 36.5 in the vertical jump. He looked like a top-15 guy and the left foot that was injured for much of the 2014 season€” looked fine. Josh Gordon isn't walking on to that field anytime soon. Though there's no clear word on who the Browns quarterback will be, Parker is a stud at wideout. A potential true No. 1. Great get at 12th overall.”

#19 – Texas DT Malcom Brown

“A 6-2, 320-pound run stuffer, Brown could be an immediate plug-in guy on Mike Pettine and Jim O'Neil's 3-4 defense. I think Cleveland would love to pick up a stud pass rusher at 19, but if Bud Dupree and Vic Beasley are off the board, Brown could be the right guy here. Brown's got real man responsibilities, as he has a 4-year old stepdaughter and a 6-month-old daughter. He's all about football and doing his job. That'll be welcomed in Cleveland.”

DON BANKS – Sports Illustrated

- Posted February 24th

#12 – Louisville WR DeVante Parker

“With Josh Gordon suspended and Jordan Cameron a potential free agent, getting more options in Cleveland’s passing game is an obvious priority. With four receivers likely to go in this year’s top 20, the Browns can’t run the risk of waiting until their No. 19 selection to find a receiver.”

#19 – Texas DT Malcom Brown

“Having secured their much-needed pass-catcher at No. 12 in Louisville’s DeVante Parker, the Browns turn their attention to their woeful 32nd-ranked run defense and select one of the draft’s safest bets to upgrade the interior of their line.”

MATT MILLER – Bleacher Report

- Posted February 24th

#12 – Texas DT Malcom Brown

“With pick No. 12, the Browns are in a good position to beef up the defensive line. Phil Taylor had a nice career for a short time, but he's not a long-term plan at nose tackle. Malcom Brown can be with his 6'2", 319-pound frame and surprising quickness and burst from the 0-technique position. He can also bump down and play a shade technique if needed in a four-man front.”

#19 – Arizona State WR Jaelen Strong

“Jaelen Strong was not a good fit for the Kansas City Chiefs at pick No. 18, but he's an ideal fit for the Cleveland Browns at pick No. 19. That's because he's a deep threat with limited yards-after-catch skill underneath. The Chiefs want to dink-and-dunk; the Browns want to hit home runs. Strong is a home run hitter.

Strong has the size (6'2", 217 lbs) and speed (4.44) to take the top off the defense. He's a little stiff in his stem (where his route breaks) at times, but is enough of a straight-line guy to burn past defenders and then attack the ball in the air downfield.”

And for all of you QB-crazed fans, here’s this week’s Mock of a Mock Draft:

Justin Byram – Redskins Writer & Draft Analyst for HogsHaven.com (SB Nation’s Redskins Website) and The Son of Washington Redskins Blog. SB Nation posted Justin’s mock draft and the following thoughts that he had for how the Browns first round would turn out.

#12 – THERE’S BEEN A TRADE…

5. TRADE: Cleveland Browns: Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon

“With Johnny Football rehabbing, and Brian Hoyer on his way out, the Browns select their 3rd first round quarterback in 4 years. The Browns swap the number 12 overall selection with the Redskinsas well as giving the Skins an additional second and third round pick to select the Oregon signal caller. The latest savior of Cleveland: Marcus Mariota.”

#19 – Oregon DL Arik Armstead

“Arik Armstead looks like a tree, and I mean that in the absolute best way possible. Armstead stands at 6'7 290 pound defensive lineman was made to be a 3-4 defensive end. A former basketball player, gave up the hardwood because he like the physicality of football. Armstead's ceiling is enormous, and is capable of become an Aldon Smith type talent if properly developed.”

I'm watching Armstead right now in the Rose Bowl (thank baby Jesus for a day off finally).

He might be the most inconsistent player I've seen so far. It's maddening and hard to get a read on. There are times he has a good first step, translates that to power, violent hands and gets good leverage on his man to drive him back.

Other times he just gets mauled.... Bad. When I think of a 5 tech player, the gold standard is obviously JJ Watt. The big things noticably lacking with Armstead are the elite first step, and that ability to threaten the outside shoulder to get around the edge. He consistently tries to win inside and flat out can't get it done. Florida states guards picked up on that after their first series or so. I just don't see the elite, 1st round burst.

Side note. One thing I so appreciate about Mariota over Manziel from this time last year - Marcus makes quick decisions. If he see's it, he doesn't hesitate.

Here's one just for shiggles where I basically just kept trading unless the BPA was a position of need.

Your Picks:

Round 1 Pick 14 (MIA): Amari Cooper, WR, Alabama (A)

Round 1 Pick 20 (PHI): A.J. Cann, OG, South Carolina (C+)

Round 2 Pick 11: Benardrick McKinney, ILB, Mississippi State (A-)

Round 2 Pick 12 (N.O.): Michael Bennett, DT, Ohio State (A-)

Round 2 Pick 15 (MIA): Eric Kendricks, ILB/OLB, UCLA (B+)

Round 2 Pick 20 (PHI): Breshad Perriman, WR, UCF (C+)

Round 3 Pick 14 (MIA): Donovan Smith, OT, Penn State (B+)

Round 3 Pick 15 (S.F.): Bryce Petty, QB, Baylor ©

Round 4 Pick 11 (MINN): Jamison Crowder, WR, Duke (A)

Round 4 Pick 12: Joey Mbu, DT, Houston (B-)

Round 4 Pick 13 (N.O.): Byron Jones, CB, Connecticut (B-)

Round 4 Pick 16: Ladarius Gunter, CB, Miami (Fla.) (C+)

Round 5 Pick 11: Jeff Heuerman, TE, Ohio State (B+)

Round 6 Pick 13: Clayton Geathers, SS, UCF (A)

Round 6 Pick 26: Conner Neighbors, FB, LSU (C+)

Round 7 Pick 12: Justin Manton, K, Louisiana-Monroe (A)

Honestly, I would be happy if we could land Petty in the third. He has all of the tools to be a franchise QB, plus he's a fantastic leader. Give him a solid two years of development and he may be a steal. Unfortunately, we'd have to find someone else to QB for the next two years.

Resign Hoyer, draft Petty, add an offensive guard and a tall receiving red zone threat.

OR

Find a way to get Mariota and hitch your wagon to him. If he fails, this FO fails.

Outside of the top two QBs, I like Petty as well.

As I wrote earlier, seeing Bryce work on his drop it seems to tighten up his feet and overall mechanics. His feet were prone to being very erratic in the shotgun.

Tim-Jones will not be there by rd 4 and he would certainly be rated an A+ in that spot. He had too big a combine. They need to update their system to reflect combine results.

PS-would anyone be tempted by Melvin Gordon if he is still there round 2?

Do his eyes bother you like they do me? He really struggles to come off his first read from all I've watched.

I think it's even less realistic that we'd have 8 picks in the first three rounds.

Actually I remarked that I saw him making reads in the tape I watched. But he also made his share of WTF throws. Many of the latter came out of the gun with his feet anywhere, but where they should have been.

The WTF throws I saw, especially early on against TCU. Hmm. Might be worth going back and taking a second look at him.

Try at least a half of each of these...

See if you see the same improvement in his feet when he has to back-peddle at all like from the pistol after a play fake.
