THE BROWNS BOARD

Mike White & Spider Man Likey-Likies...

While Charlies Fryes MVP performance at the Senior Bowl reminds me to never make too much out of a couple quarters of football with strangers thrown together in a 1 week blender - my football wood factor still went from balsa to sequoia over 2 QBs yesterday.

Western Kentucky's Mike White showed us why WKU was the highest scoring offense within the last 2 years.  In 2016, this guy had a comp % of 67 with a TD:INT ratio of 37:7 with 4363 yds and in 2017 the comp % was 65.7 with the ratio of 26:8 with 4177 yds.   I think a HUGE part of the slight decline in numbers was the change in Head Coach from Jeff Brohm (former Cleveland Brown QB for approximately 1 cup of coffee) to Mike Sanford.  Anyway, kid looked comfortable and made some nice throws while attempts to manipulate the Safety were acknowledged.  Good arm with a nice 6-4 frame.

Until catching Kyle Lauletta's act yesterday, I always thought of Richmond QBs as Encie-weencie Spiders.  How did Cal miss this guy in his search for the biggest underdog QB?   Did you take one of Rip Van Winkle's sleeping pills? Anyway, he clearly earned the MVP honor yesterday  (although SDSU's RB Penny reminds us there will be GOOD RBs after round 1).  Was there a throw this kid couldn't make even in some air tight windows?  He's got good size too at 6'3".  In 2016, his comp% was 63% with a TD:INT ratio of 24:8 and 3022 yds and in 2017 he had a comp% of 64.9 with the ratio of 28:12 on the TDs to INTs with 3737 yds. If we do what Washington did the year they drafted 2 QBs - he'd be someone to consider in the area Washington drafted Cousins in or a little later if doable...

Virginia's Kurt Benkert lasered in a beautiful throw to Rashaad Penny down the sideline just over the BYU corner.  He improved his comp % in 2017 to 58.5 from 56.2 the year before. In 2016, he had 21 TDs to 11 INTs with 2552 yds. In 2017, he had 25 TDs to 9 INTs. I don'tknow how accurate this is but he's listed at 6'4" by College Football at Sports-Reference.com.  He could be another guy to consider later if we draft 1 early and 1 late.

At the other end of some impressive QBing yesterday, emerged some play makers that had to intrigue NFL teams such as:

LSU WR DJ Chark

UCF TE Jordan Akins

UCF WR TreQuan Smith

SDSU RB Rashaad Penny

ND TE Durham Smythe

OSU WR Marcel Ateman (his teammate James Washington followed up a great year with a great week of practices)

WR CSU Michael Gallup

I'm sure I missed some offensive guys that made some plays here and there.

Who were some play makers or QBs that jumped out at you guys on the offensive side of the ball?

There was already a thread on White - you can bet he is noticed now. Impressive - Dorsey is interested in him.

Welcome to my Darkhorse Camp...

They measure at the Sr. Bowl. Benkert was 6' 2.5 and 214#. His throwing mechanics are at the top of this class. He had a lot of issues this earlier week working under Center.

White, Lualetta, Benkert are all "sleepers" but no one I would build my franchise around. Especially the Browns. And while I'd agree that this would be the draft to double-up and get a mid-round QB ... don't the Browns have Kessler (3rd) and Kizer (2nd) on the roster? And presuming you draft the top guy at #1 and sign an Alex Smith type place-holder, where's the room for a 4th QB? And don't say practice squad, because anyone you draft in the 3rd-5th round range can't go on the PS because another team will grab them. The Browns will be in a  good position at QB with Kizer (still has upside), the #1 pick (presumably) and Kessler. And if you have a veteran like Smith or Bradford or Keenum ... you're in even better shape and not in need of a mid-round guy. Just load up on the depth and leave QB alone after pick #1

Kessler is a lost cause.  When he goes in the game,  I'm expecting either a 10yd sack for a loss,  or an incomplete pass out of bounds

Exactly Tom!

As for the Matt Miller perspective - there were a few guys that could have probably earned that MVP honor such as Penny and LSU WR DJ Chark (5 receptions for 160 yards including a 75 yard TD).

I think I would still need a heavy dose of Viagra....accompanied by a bedroom session with like Kaley Cuocco....to have wood for Lauletta and White.  Though I could see them being taken by the Browns as a second drafted QB in the late rounds.

That is so even though I have some kinship with Western KY.....since my Dad is a native of Bowling Green KY.

Particularly since we have a plethora of draft picks.  How many?  Like 14?

A two-year starter at WKU after transferring from South Florida, White is one of those Senior Bowl players being talked about this week (especially with the Cleveland Browns).

And hey....the name Mike White is somewhat heroic in Cleveland.   Mayor Mike White helped save the Browns from Modell's attempt to move them.  Does that carry any weight?

Mayor White Helped move the Browns .. what the hell are you talking about.. Him and Fred Nance are as guilty as Art,, Stop it Gip!

Sure White helped get the ball rolling as far as getting a team back.. But his hands aren't totally clean in this Gip.. The moment The Indians got the sweetheart deal.. White was every bit a part of it as it all happened on his watch.... I got your Bludcart old man...

In case all you all forget....the Gateway Project was primarily a Cuyahoga County initiative....not a City of Cleveland Initiative. The entire county was involved in voting on the sin tax.  Certainly White has his input....but the whole thing you claim was an "Indians" Sweetheart deal was Gateway....promoted by the county.

Beyond that...there WERE perfectly valid reasons to, if you will, show preference to  the Gateway project over a football stadium:  The Baseball Field had a guaranteed 81 +  nights performance.   (81 games of parking fees, people going to the local restaurants, etc.)   The Arena.....could likely have as many as 300 nights of activity between Cavs games, hockey games, arena football games, concerts,  etc.   The Republican Nat'l convention was held here because of the arena.

The Browns hold all of 10 events per year.  As a PURE economic asset, the ball park and the arena should have been vastly favored over a football stadium.   It is just an economic fact of life.  And the county...the entity actually footing the bill and raising the revenue, was aware of this.

And If I remember correctly.. George Voinovich was involved toward the end of his career and spilled over on Mayor Whites desk if I recall.. very early 90's

Actually....I believe Voinovich was Governor of Ohio at the time of the Gateway Vote...He was Gov. from 1991 to 1998

And interestingly.....he was the Mayor of Cleveland for every single day of the 1980s decade....but not for a single day of any other decade:

54th Mayor of Cleveland
In office
January 1, 1980 – December 31, 1989

Ok I used to be employed by his brother back in the 80's.. And he was part of a different "Gateway" project... Which had nothing to do with sports , or Gateway PC's..
