Browns in line to win 5 or 6 major awards this season

Coach of the Year seems locked up but is MVP a possibility for Cleveland this year?

Coach of the Year

Not only is Kevin Stefanski here to stay but he’s clearly a prime candidate for Coach of the Year in the NFL. Earlier in the season a national analyst lauded Stefanski’s ability as a coach and play caller before major injuries continued to decimate the team.

Now, with the season coming to an end, getting this Cleveland team to 11-5 is beyond impressive and, likely, locked up the award for Stefanski.

Defensive Player of the Year

A “fun” argument on social media is just how good DE Myles Garrett is compared to others at his position. Garrett gets double and triple-teamed more than anyone in the league, has offenses game planning around him to get the ball out in less than two seconds and still gets a huge amount of pressures on quarterbacks while also playing the run.

LB/DE Micah Parsons has had a similar season as Garrett and could be in contention for the award as well.

Comeback Player of the Year

This award is likely to go to DB Damar Hamlin for a ton of good reasons. If it doesn’t, Flacco’s story has taken the NFL by storm and that story could steal the award away for the Browns starting QB.

Special Teams Player of the Year

This is one where Cleveland will have a top-three finisher but kicker Dustin Hopkins missing the last three weeks of the season (getting hurt in Week 16) likely takes the award away from him. Hopkins got hurt chasing down a kick return that went for a touchdown. Felt wrong to not at least include him here and penalize him for that effort even if it will keep him from winning the award.

MVP

It is at least a part of the conversation that Garrett also should be in the running for MVP. He’s currently listed as +50000 on DraftKings, along with Parsons, while being the odds-on favorite for DPOY. Before Flacco’s resurgence, Garrett (along with Stefanski) was the main reason the Browns were in playoff contention.

Assistant Coach of the Year

Putting Garrett in a position to succeed, DC Jim Schwartz has put himself in position for this award. A rarely discussed award, DeMeco Ryans, Dan Quinn and Brian Daboll have won the last three. Ryans and Daboll went on to become head coaches after it while Quinn pulled his name from consideration despite being a top candidate for multiple head coaching jobs.

Executive of the Year

GM Andrew Berry has done amazing work putting together the roster and then adjusting when injuries befell the team. No easy task especially with the amount of salary cap space on IR (around 25% of theirs) at this point. Big moves and small moves have paid off for Berry this season.

The odds of the Browns pulling in all of these awards are low. MVP will likely go to a QB. Special teams is unlikely due to Hopkins' injury and Hamlin’s return from passing on the field likely keeps him at the top of the comeback list.

It is still amazing that Cleveland is rightfully in discussion for seven awards and could take home five or six with four feeling close to certain.

Which awards do you think the Browns should win?

Am looking forward to the release of the Pro Bowl roster.

Cant imagine JOK not getting a nod.

Along with Miles, Hopkins and Bitonio, gives us pretty nice representation.

Coach of the Year

Past 2 winners.. not who'd ya think..

Year Coach Tm Voting
2022 Brian Daboll New York Giants Voting
2021 Mike Vrabel Tennessee Titans

Stef should be ahead of John Harbaugh or a Dan Campbell ? Stef is the play caller of calling plays & schemes of 4 different QB's wins (not a small thing Andy Reid)

Dolphins Mike Daniels or Rams Sean McVay call plays also. Not 4 QB starters, but Mike Daniels I think is Stef's biggest competitor?

Stef/John Harbaugh/ Daniels fits a Top 3

MVP is just a nickname for the QB on the best team. No chance a defensive player would ever win it. It will go to Lamar, who isn’t even the best QB this year statistically just on the team with the best record.

COTY should be Kevin, pretty obvious - the other candidates fell off pretty hard (except the Lions, but getting embarrassed on prime time hurts your chances at the popularity rewards)

DPOY is obviously Garrett, rare to see a DE single handedly winning games but he has this year

Comeback player of the year is obviously Flacco, Hamlin is the feel good story to play after cardiac arrest a year ago…but if it’s based more on performance improvement it’s Flacco

Assistant of the year Schwartz is an obvious choice

I think those 4 are pretty safe at least. Though I’d prefer no awards besides an AFC championship

Agreed on Schwartz as assistant of the year. Well, wasn't aware- but after seeing the SNF game Hopkins is going to lose out to the Cowboys Aubrey.  He hasn't missed a FG all year, and has a long of 60.

Don't know when they hand out the Comeback player of the year award, but should Flacco beat dem Bungles, he has to be in serious consideration.

However, should it turn out that after this Sunday, we're locked into the #5 seed, I don't even want the Browns to let Joe see the field.

I’d be ok with Joe seeing a quarter, just to keep him fresh with some time seeing another defense. Otherwise yea, rest em all up. Bengals may have nothing to play for too after tomorrow though.

But I’d love the ravens to lose to the dolphins and need to go against Pitt for the division - history would indicate that won’t be an easy game for Baltimore.

There is only 1 major award. THE SUPERBOWL

●   I couldn’t care less about any other award,  ok ....

●  That is the  ultimate  award .......  but I try  NOT  to think about it  too  much it, at least not now  -or-  in the past  57 years.   Kind of that unreachable star,  at least not yet  (like the song says)  especially  for us boomers who want to .....   "snag one while we're still around here." ..... again I try  NOT  to think about it,  yes  Mr WVA,  that  (11-5  .688%)  kind of makes you think about it.

But right now they have a shot at it the first time since the  Kosar or Sipe years  -or-  or even back to the glory Jim Brown era to get the real  ultimate  award,  an NFL ring,  the  NFL Championship.   Oh so close ..... sometimes,  especially on quarterback  #4  this year.   ( In my  about 65 +/-  something years as a BROWNS fan.)

Yeah, that would be a  huge  award,  biggest  ever as a  BROWNS'  fan.   Until then I will like to take a few other of these other trophies.  Like they say,  more often now,  " just win one before I  croak, lol."    Hopefully before to many more join this list like  Dutch  and  others  here,  you know who you are !

SO, until then,  enjoy watching this exciting team and  ........      :D

GO BROWNS !

Agree with @bbedward picks to the letter.

With regards to Joe and others playing against the Bungholes, it all depends on today's results for me. If Miami beats Baltiwhore and Stoolers beat Seahawks, the division and #1 seed is on the line in the last round, and Browns would seem to have the easier game.

Nice job with that Al - Thanks!

2 recommendations I have.

First, CB Denzel Ward's talent and ability sets up very favorable coverage dynamics at the back end.  We played Denver without him and Newsome was in over his head all game long against Sutton.  When Ward is in the line-up we rarely ever have to worry about Newsome being in over his head while Ward handles the #1 WR.  Schwartz recently called Ward one of the best or the best corner he's had since he's been coaching.  He's already made a Pro Bowl so this seems like as good of a year for him to make another.

Second, Wyatt Teller has had a terrific year that probably won't even be known by all the fans voting.  He's playing next to a 3rd string RT on top of that.  He excels at trapping and pulling.  His biggest problem?  He's not as well known as some other guards; but he's a blue collar gem that enabled our offense to overcome some big time personnel absence.

Stefanski and Schwartz should for surely win. Garrett has a good chance, Garrett is the best defensive player in the NFL on the best defense - so fuck TJ Watt. Flacco should win Comeback Player of the Year, Hamlin played 5 games this year with his total stats being 2 tackles so he literally did nothing in terms of performance - but the NFL might give it to Hamlin for PR purposes.
