I was lurking on a Steelers board a yesterday and yeah, they are pretty upset. I think Garrett was the best player on the best defense leading the way. I'm not sure what happened to Garrett at the tail end of the season, his production dipped (shoulder maybe?)

I'm gonna sound like a typical homer here - but hear me out.  Remember back when Colin Kaepernick became a big brat and respecting the National Anthem was beneath him?   The NFL pretty much singled him out and black-balled him from playing again.  YES, he wasn't alone but QBs are supposed to be leaders.  Consequently, something took place behind the scenes where someone with a lot of power had a thought process resembling a quote in Shakespeare's Macbeth "The loddy doth protest too much, methinks!"

As Myles' success soared to all new heights in the 1st half of the season; he started getting held even more frequently and blatantly by both guys in double teams right in front of the officials.  However, Myles complained when umpires, referees, linesmen and line judges stopped flagging those committing the penalty.  If you refuse to call it - you're giving permission for people to break the rules of the game.  Understanding how huge this was at impacting the success of our defense - Myles made the very legitimate gripe; and then got fined by the league for doing so.  After this, I only remember 1 or 2 more holding flags against his opponents the rest of the season. The die-hards on this board weren't just keeping track - they brought multiple pictures and even a video or 2 of unflagged holds/muggings right near passers clearly in the view of refs and umpires.  When this occurred outside of the pocket - the linesmen and line judges gave it all the same blind eye that pictures/videos disagreed with.  Myles was on pace for about 28 sacks or so.  I'll concede the playing through injury had an impact on the volume. However, even a blind man in the bleachers could see the unwillingness to enforce the rules of the game via allowing everybody to hold Myles.

Moral of the story?  If you're gonna poke the bear - you better wine and dine his ass while doing so.  Right Myles?   You would have won 4 Defensive Player of the Year Awards this season if you did that.  That said, we'll settle for 1 - and thanks for the relentless efforts shown in all your sic em, sock em and sack em.  My football wood factor felt like it was on viagra all season.

Even fellow contenders making an argument in favor of Myles:

I think former PENN STATE star and current NFL Pro Bowl LBer (Micah Parsons) knows what he's talking about above.  Myles was the best player on the top rated Defense.  Not only that, but LTs are better pass protectors that RTs - and that's where Myles lined up most of the time over the LT (except for some occasional wrinkles by Schwartz).  Like Parsons said, film showed Garrett faced more double teams that Wattshisname.

It isn't just the double team rates, but a combination of that, drawing opposing blocking assignment, pressure rates vs double team rates and alignment.  Where Myles rushed from the interior quite a bit more than Watt.   To me, anyway, interior pressure scores > edge pressure scores.   This is why Aaron Donald had been considered the most dominant defensive player in the NFL for such a long stretch.

seem's there were 2

I'll give it a shot.  11 time Pro Bowl LT Trent Williams who faced Myles this year - had a glowing endorsement for Myles as Defensive Player of the Year.  Williams also just earned his 3rd consecutive All Pro honor; so I think the wealth of experience and excellence makes him a very credible source.  I shared the video/sound of that in the Myles/DPOY thread that started over the weekend.
