Holmes Trade...Biggest Rip Ever?

This trade must rank in the top 20 NFL worst trades ever. Anyone agree? Disagree? How do you trade a potential HOFer, recent Super Bowl MVP, great young proven receiver for a petty 5th round pick? Despite his recent troubles, he is still worth a 2nt round pick to the right team.

I LOVE IT!!!!!

The Steelers were going to cut him. If they traded him they could prevent him from going to a division rival and get some kind of comp for him. If you think the Rooneys made this deal becuase they though what they got in return was fair you are insane. It was the best offer we got and the deal was worked out in less than 24 hours.

Surely they could have got much better than a 5th. Seems like they took the first offer they got.

So, you think the Rooneys came to the conclusion that Holmes couldn't be rehabilitated? That a 4 game suspension and 2 years in the league's substance abuse program would not have made any difference?

So, who do the Steelers have to throw to now? Ward has one foot in retirement...or at least he is no where the player he used to be. He tailed off at the end of last year. Holmes, their primary threat is now gone. Hell, the way it looks even the Browns poor defensive backfield would have no problem covering their receivers.

Pittsburgh didn't make the decision based on on field performance, that much is obvious. Rumor has it if they couldn't trade Holmes they were strongly considering cutting Holmes. Needless to say the decision was inevitable. There is also a rumor floating around, a unlikely one if you ask me but still a possible one that Leon Washington may be involved. His free agent status puts a few variables in to the mix but I believe it was PFT that reported the possibility. Either way in hindsight, good riddance. He's been more than a headache lately and someone had to take the fall. It sure as hell wasn't going to be our 100 million dollar man.

EDIT: Also lets not forget about Wallace who is more than ready to be a starter. He's a single coverage nightmare.

Money grab times 2 and what do you know, nothing to prosecute on TWICE. I wonder why? Hmmm probably because he didn't rape either.

In other news, Holmes has yet to be charged with any crime since being drafted by the Steelers. Ben has no criminal record. Rogers tried taking a loaded handgun on a plane, charges will be filed and Roger's statement claiming he forgot it was their can and will be used as admitting he did have a loaded hand gun with him.

If he got caught a 3rd time he would face a minimum of a 16 game suspension. The Rooneys and our staff our there to coach and give guidance, not babysit 24/7. Holmes was looking for the Steelers to give him a huge contract (top 5 reciever money) and the Steelers wouldn't have done that if he had never violated league sustance policy. His value would have most likely done nothing but decrease as time went along, and if we couldn't trade him we wanted to cut him without taking a cap hit.

As for Ward, he is as good as ever. He had statistically the 2nd best year of his career last year.

Ward had 4 receptions of 40+ yards. Only 12 players had more, all of them are "big-play" recievers, not "possesion" recievers like Ward.

Ward had 15 receptions of 20+ yards. (Only 7 behind the league leader) Once again, only 12 players had more all of them being described as "big-play" recievers.

So Ward is in the top 15 in the league at making "big plays" despite being an aging "possession" reciever. He may be aging, but his production isn't diminishing and he is proving that there is no limit in his ability. Basically, he's building a HOF career that will last another solid 3-5 years.

Looking at his last year's game-by-game stats he didn't seem to tail off at the end of the season as you claimed...He had 8 catches in both week 1 and week 17.

Perhaps his statistics weren't much of a falloff, but in looking at him he appeared to not have quite the same...whatever it is he has...about him. He is going into his 13th year in the league, and though speed has never been his forte, I still think he looked off. Perhaps it was the losing that the team suffered late in the year and not his performance per se....so maybe it was others and not him that seemed to lose something.

Obviously, during are five game losing streak nobody on are team even had a decent game, becuase that would have been enough to beat the Chiefs, Raiders and Browns. It's hard to play with the same intensity when you keepv losing as opposed to winning, but Ward didn't suffer much of any kind of falloff near the end of the season.

Seriously Pittsburgh would have been better served just flat out cutting the guy. They look like idiots by taking the measily 5th round pick.

If you cut the guy, the teams scrambling for his services look like idiots, but now the Jets look like hero's for fleecing the dirtbag franchise.

What a joke of a franchise acting all moral and shit with their retired players dropping dead left and right from locker room performance enhancement drugs.

There are about a dozen ex-Steelers that wish they could not only wake-n-bake, but just wake.

Freaking hyprocrites.

What was said about Pig Pen is the family and the girl didn't want to press charges, wonder what that cost him.

As far as my understanding goes ; If there ever was a player in ur team who is a rapist, murderer, abuser, drug doer etc etc etc and you want to get rid of him for the best bargain u lift the phone and call the Bengals ! So many years in the NFL and you dont even know that ? sheeeeesh !

Yet, he is the ONLY one in the NFL within this time frame to be accused of this - so dont give me this bullshit he is all innocent.

Money grab my ass..... kind of hard to explain how it happens to the same person twice within nine month period, yet, nobody in the NFL gets accused of it once....

Are you really this blind?

Do you think this was about a "trade" or "getting value" or "getting taken"?

No it's called making a statement. That the Steelers -- unlike certain Ohio teams -- won't tolerate such crap. In fact, the LESS they get for him, the louder the statement.

Statement made.

What statement did they make? If you screw up we'll just send you to another team? If they really wanted to send a message they could have fined him a huge amount and/or benched him for several games. In fact, the message they sent was we'll send you to a better team and I guarantee the Jets are better than the Steelers right now.

1. Small Market team

2. 100 million dollar contract (ego to go with it)

3. Not exactly Brad Pitt in the looks department

4. God like status in Pittsburgh and surrounding areas for that matter.

5. Dumb broads

He needs to keep it in his pants plain and simple. He hasn't and now he will. How exactly is it HARD TO EXPLAIN? Guy can't keep in it his pants. Celebrity status due to his position with one of the most storied franchises in the NFL. Low standards + dick problem = trouble in 9 months. Now unless your intelligence prohibits you from grasping this concept I'm not sure why this is so hard to fathom. And speed with your thank you. You're just as dumb, if not more dumb. You may want to fall back in to obscurity because your contributions since my return are less than stellar. MONEY GRAB. The end.

A statement for the franchise and all those that reside and those that will soon reside under the Steeler organization. Is it that hard to grasp? They obviously didn't think much of Holmes and were prepared to cut him. The Statement was FOR THE FRANCHISE not Santonio Holmes. You're a genius.

Yea seeing as a guy with 100 million dollar contract and women constantly throwing themselves at him needs a reason to force himself on someone. Brilliant assessment. Congratulations.

Roboswallow,

Could you be any more limp wristed? It's like you're showing us the shoot all over your chin with every post. Do yourself a favor and try not to be so obvious.

Obviously, you haven't been paying attention - Big Ben ain't getting love. His inability to accept the word no meant some girl just made about 5 million $ for quiet time. Ben-Dover prolly paid 2.5 mil and the Rooneys gladly matched it. And just for a nice diversion, the Rooneys got rid of Holmes to throw off the scent of this epic wrong doing.

Don't worry - Flugel will translate so even simpletons like you will understand what's being written and implied.

If Pitts is making a statement by dumping Holmes they are being inconsistent.

If the team statement is "we won't put up with players getting in trouble" then why hasn't Roethlisberger been traded or released? Don't bother telling me that because no charges were filed BR was innocent. The DA said no charges were filed because he didn't feel he had the evidence to get a conviction. Notice he didn't say no charges were filed because his office thought no crime was committed? That my friends, is the difference between NOT GUILTY and innocent.

Both Ben and Holmes never faced a criminal conviction since being drafted by the Steelers. In the court of law they are both life long law biding citizens. Although, Holmes is facing he 2nd league drug violation. The Steelers imposed their own 1 game suspension for the first one and the league will impose a 4 game one for next season. If he gets a 3rd he get atleast a 16 game suspension. Holmes contract is up after next and he was expecting his next contract to give him top 5 wr money. This alone would get Holmes traded or let walk in FA. The Steelers felt the best case scenerio for the Holmes situation was that we get as much as we can as soon as possible in the process of getting rid of him. The Rooney's felt trading him for a 5th round pick was worth it for the team.

"Token" ?? Our BEST Receiver ??? Come on man ... this is a painful move . Period. A Statement needed to be made. Holmes is obviously a regular Pot user . So what could they do ? Ben has never been convicted of anything. Holmes admitted to using in the past and now has tested for the same thing. You`re the idiot. WE have our own boards we frequent , we come here to see what is the topic of our rivals. And guess what, if you didn't always have 3 or 4 threads running wild about Pittsburgh , we would just leave for the most part. You dont want to hear from us ?? Stop being obsessed WITH our Team !! But you wont ...because you`re bitter and jealous ... and blaa blaa Ya I know "your Not" ... whatever, I cant hear what you`re saying because your actions are screaming so loud.
