Congressman Charlie Rangel I thought this was supposed to be limited to crazy quotes. There's nothing crazy or off the wall there. No one I served with wanted anything to do with Iraq. You have to be there. If 90% of the guys I served with had had a job making even, like, 40,000 a year they'd never have been in the service in the first place. I'm not really sure why that's considered a stupid quote. I think its pretty accurate. It seems like the people that I know that joined the army did it because it was their best option. His statement is surprising to me considering that he served time in Korea, obtaining a purple heart and other decorations. Volunteering for war is about selflessness, sacrifice and believing in something bigger than your own self centered desires. It's about protecting our way of life and the freedoms we celebrate at the cost of over a million lives lost in conflict over the past 237 years. No doubt. those in war zones are counting the days before the can get the hell out. And, sure, you have your "crazies" and adrenalin junkies who thrive in those hellish environments. Rangel statement disrespects those who place patriotism and love of country before anything else. Call it corny or misguided but those who answer the call to duty are the backbone of this country. Interestingly, many of these crazy patriots come home and fully enjoy the "decent" civilian careers that Rangel so foolishly states they are abandoning.
