Between the Men's WC last year, the Women's WC this year, the 2016 Copa America tourney being held in the US, (and potentially the 2022 WC), growing popularity of the EPL, growing popularity and expansion of the MLS, bringing older overseas stars to the MLS, shifting US demographics to ethnicities that watch soccer, etc etc etc

Among 12-24 year old in the US, Messi is their 4th favorite athlete and Ronaldo is their 7th.

Or this graphic from a few years ago, showing Pro Soccer as the 2nd favorite sport among 12-24 year olds

Soccer.jpg

Soccer is growing in popularity in this country, whether some want to admit it or not.

On the other hand....

world-series-ratings.jpg

median-age-avid-sports-fans.jpg

On the other hand Baseball is dying a slow death. The average fan is getting older and older as kids today become less interested in the sport. I find the sport incredibly boring, and look forward to it becoming much less relevant. Watching the same Top 10s all summer, a variation of maybe three different plays in baseball, gets incredibly old...

Keep trying soccer fag.

See the graph, soccer is LAST in popularity among the demographics that count.....and that would be "Americans".

But...I will give you this to ponder: Why in hell are we getting so much freaking English/European soccer. Sure, its premier over there....but if In fact I do want to watch soccer....which is rare...I want to see the MLS. (Is it "minor" in comparison? Maybe....but it is our North American league.

I am more interested in if NY, Chicago, LA, Dallas/Portland/Seattle...even Columbus and what they do than I am interested in what Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham...or who the fuck ever is doing. Half of those teams aren't even towns/cities. I don't know what they are.

Here we want city vs. city. Pittsburgh vs. Cleveland, Boston vs. NY, Chicago vs. Detroit. At least, to me, there would be more interest in those matchups.

The only thing comparable that I could tell that exists there would be like a Manchester vs. Liverpool match.

EPL has the all stars. They are a better product. That is why. MLS is improving, but isn't at that level. Without a local team to root for, I'd want to watch the best players and the best product.

I'll have to look over the source of your graph again (where someone's favorite sport can be "Olympics"). Either way, what about all of the data I presented? Do you disagree with the notion that baseball is dying and soccer is growing?

That doesn't do it for me. The best cricket players come from Pakistan and India....that doesn't mean I would not rather watch American cricket (if such a thing existed)

Perhaps I am spoiled as we know that the world's best baseball/football/basketball/hockey players play here.

Nevertheless...I would still much rather see the North American competition.

Yes, partially I do. I think that is just your brain at work...not the reality. While soccer is growing...it is not growing at the rate you think....and I don't think baseball is dying....at all.

I mean....10/20/50 times more people still go to see baseball than go to see soccer in the country. Maybe you just wish it were so.

Michigan just won the Big Ten baseball title. I expect more were interested in that than if they won the Big Ten soccer title.

Look I went to a college that recently won a soccer National Championship.....and which was probably the most significant team sports title this area has seen since the Browns won in 1964. That still would not get me to say that baseball is dying.

(And "The Olympics" is in fact a major spectator sport event...that is highly popular. My wife will watch "The Olympics" more than any other sporting event on TV...so don't be snide"

I loved playing Olympics in gym. I know a kid that played travel Olympics. I wasn't bad at Olympics either....

You're confusing soccer growing and baseball dying with soccer being more popular than baseball, which I never said.

The graphs above show a sport with an aging fan base that isn't being replaced with a younger audience. That doesn't paint a good picture for MLB.

On the other hand soccer is growing in popularity, especially among the younger audience.

Gip, with all due respect, you're the skip bayless of the Browns board.

You never back off of an opinion and must always have the last word. I'm not saying that it's always a bad thing unless of course you're objectively wrong.

You said 10/20/50 times more people go to baseball games than soccer and without getting into what a vague estimate that is, it isn't at all the point. Soccer is more popular with the younger generation than baseball which has nothing to do with current attendance. Baseball has historically been more popular than soccer in this country, but the tides are changing.

You go on to say that you didn't confuse shit, but citing made up attendance numbers in this context contradicts that statement.

The objective facts state that the popularity of soccer is on the rise while interest in baseball is dwindling. Baseball ratings get lower every year which is why it's a great american PAST time.

Im sure you'll have some color coded response floundering about in a sea of nearly on-topic minutia and gripes about syntax or some other irrelevant horse shit, but it's ok, I'll let you have the last word, Gip Bayless.

Edit: just for the record I would much rather watch baseball than soccer, but that is neither here nor there.

A very rare occurrence :)

My numbers were just guesstimates.

I said that baseball attendance figures were NOT waning....(but I didn't deny that soccer attendance may be increasing...I am not actually certain).

So, what are YOU confused by? Nothing I said certainly.

That is NOT fucking objective at all......it is purely subjective on your part. There is little dwindling of interest in baseball:

Any "dwindling" can be attributable to economics primarily. The small drop coincides with the nation's recession(If you looked at my income figures my "dwindling" would be worse than this")

The same sort of trend has occurred with the MLS:

Soccer is popular with kids 5-12.

And with Moms who own mini vans.....

It's darn near replaced little league, thats for sure.

Personally, I always loved playing baseball, but think it is boring a hell to watch......zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Because suburban mothers don't want their little kids playing with Negroes at the city park.

Even as a joke this really doesn't make sense. Based on demos in the suburbs, where these parks/fields exist, and who is playing what sport.

Are the Moms with the Mini Vans with Children from 5-12 also thinking, Less likely of injuries in soccer than Baseballs thrown by kids below age of 12?? Some Parents choose to wussify kids these days and possible flow chart has got to be out there..

Well it isn't a joke and its not mean spirited. suburban moms don't want their kids competing and playing against tougher inner city school teams. soccer seems safer to them. football? It's a little rough.

Well, that isn't what you said. You said suburban moms don't want their kids competing against black kids in the city park, as a response to a post saying soccer is popular for kids 5-`12.

- Football was never mentioned originally. Of course football is more physical, no matter is who you're playing. I was only ever comparing soccer and baseball, which is why your comment made no sense to me. It seems like your whole comparison was meant to be football vs soccer, which is fine, but that wasn't how you stated it. You basically just said mom''s have their kids play soccer because they dont want them playing with black kids in a city park. Which is incorrect on multiple levels...

Football is a collision sport

Soccer is a contact sport

Baseball is a "maybe there is some light contact, and anything big is generally an accident, like two outfielders running into each other, or a wild pitch"

I am not sure how you could list baseball as more physical than soccer...

My intent was to poke fun at your graph from earlier.

What am I wrong about? What evidence do you have to show I am wrong?

Show me those graphs that show young people just as interested in baseball...

I hate baseball, but I have been to more Indians games than pro soccer matches (0 pro matches, but some college games and 1 international game). You know why? It is readily available and pretty cheap. I imagine if I lived in Cbus I would have gone to some crew games. My friends went, I was invited, and after the game we hung out downtown. Hardly anyone at a baseball game even watches the game anyway, based on my experience. Of course, there being more people attending baseball overall (more matches, more stadiums, more teams) which probably means more young kids (probably, you'd need to provide data) doesn't mean much in the context of what we were talking about. I have provided numerous pieces of evidence showing the decline in baseball and growth in soccer. What do you have...?

... the Gippper "old man" special, anecdotal evidence. Congrats, your kids didn't want to go to a soccer match for the pro team that didn't exist in Cleveland. That settles the debate then...

Alright, it looks like you didn't follow along.

Your comment made no sense. You said soccer is popular among 5-12 year olds because parents don't want them getting hurt by negroes in city parks.

You then went on to mention football.

1) this is soccer vs baseball, no football involved

2) most 5-12 year olds aren't playing across multiple cities

3) if they don't want them getting hurt (you later said compared to football), baseball would still be an option. Hell, it would be a safer option.
