Universal Basic Income?

Not sure if any of you heard of Andrew Yang.

Presidential long shot who wants to give every American ages 18-64, $1000 a month..

https://bigthink.com/politics-current-affairs/andrew-yang-tax

I like the idea, but it would take a massive overhaul of our current economic system, not to mention, taxes would double on everyone, and probably triple on the ultra wealthy(but fuck them, they got money).

I guess if we ended social welfare programs and just replaced it with this, could it work? Im not sure... Im not an economist.. but if I had an extra 12k of disposable income a year, life would be a lot easier. Wouldn't be stressing about having to work every damn day to just make it by..

It would cost trillions of dollars a month, perhaps more, to give everyone this much money..

BUT..

Banks produce loans out of thin air, why can't the government do the same?

They do.

Just remember in this, the age of outrage and envy, the jerk off making minimum wage is going to be supremely pissed off if actual deadbeats are getting paid the same as he is for doing fuck all. Then those with low or zero skills will bee screaming for twice the minimum wage.

Free stuff isn't so free...the left just can't explain who will pay for all the free stuff.

im not for or against it.....it seems on one hand like utter disaster but on the other hand if the job msrket keeps going the way it is everything will be automated. U wont even be able to work fast food soon. If certain people dont come to the realization soon that "automation" will in essence destroy what we've come to know as "humanity"....thsn sonething like basic income will be a complete necessity.

Looking ahead automation appears that it will idle many human workers but the answer will never be to just pay people not to do anything, the answer likely will be tax breaks and govt subsidies for businesses not to automate but hire human workers....that would be my prediction.

u mean govt interfering with free market capitalist progress? sorry i had to get off the #memetrain for just a moment to look u in the eye and mske damn sure u fully understand what ur suggesting. And ur not wrong....as a "collective" our society may need to step up and say this compketely devalues our existence. But in doing so we're flirting with the dreaded "S" word.

And we'd be right to do so ofc but theres a heck of alot of other problems we face as a society that we need to address as a collectiv. And it would be awfully smashing if some of u older gaylords (not necessarily u OBF) who never properly learned the distinction between communism and socialism snd the varying degrees of free market mechanics, would stop throwing the C word at anybody but particularly the younger kids...who are going to be the ones that figure how we're going to continue existing on this plsnet in a meaningful way.

cause right now all these kids can come up with is this perpretuation of the dream of the digital eden.....where we send a robot version of ourselves to work and then jack into a virtual reality world to go play. Yes i know that was a bruce willis movie but some version of that is where i honestly see this ending up.

I am being pragmatic when I condemn socialism because it doesn't work. Thatcher was right, there is not enough of other peoples money to go around. Capitalism is not without it's faults and I am not against some tweaking with capitalism but capitalism does produce the highest standard of living for it's people so that is where I am at.

but u have to manage it or it collapses under its own weight. Which im afraid is almost unavoidable now in this country. Capitalism has been allowed to run unfettered across our lands and its chewed nearly everything up and spit it out....which is what it does by nature unless people cognizantly put limits on it. But all tgtoughout the decades anybody that tried doing that got shouted out with COMMIE COMMIE COMMIE. That goes on right here on this board....

you often wonder why people dont give AF about being american anymore.....you wonder why a sizeable chunk of america didnt give AF about kaepernick kneeling. I can tell u becsuse nobody feels like this is a "family" anymore...its just a viper pit. So why are u surprised when nobody cares about thst flag when it hasnt stood for anything mesningful fir a "very" long time?

Capitalism with the aid of "the swamp" has run this country into the ground. Its just a system of top down pressure that squeezes every ounce of blood out of the reg man and then when theres nothing left it squeezes some more. Sure, the squeezers have materualistically tge highest standsrds of living of all time and some table scrsps do fall our way. But overall the avg american is some of the most miserable people on the planet....because the value of our labor was squeezed out by the ruling class so they could control the vast sums of wealth created by our monetary structure.

And now at the end, they will replace people who didnt agree thst $7/hr or less was overly generous....with robots. Simply because they'd rsther pay stock holders that money.

Theres nothing intrinsically wrong with a free market economy

nor is there any such thing anywhere on Earth I would imagine. Not since the cavemen decided to give a couple members a little extra Mastodon meat to keep watch over the village.

but our society never understood that some things needed to ve done collectively whike other things could be left to a free market competive structure.

Nancy Pelosi can say the average American is being thrown the scraps while the rich profit with the Trump tax breaks but the fact is the country as a whole benefited from those tax breaks. A rising tide floats all boats. We have an economy under Trump that was promised for 8 years under Obama but never materialized. Jobs are plentiful and increased wages are the result. I believe in supply side economics because I saw it work firsthand under Reagan and how the economy flourished under his terms. That economy never happened under Jimmy Carter. You don't punish successful people, you want more of them. We all benefit that way. The way it doesn't benefit us so much is when businesses move out of the country and that business may succeed and do well but not so much the people in our country. This is another area Trump has done well at in working to keep businesses here and not moving abroad.

u still dont intrinsically understand whst happened in the 80's and why we got away with the volume of deficit spending that we did. Im not a tax and spend liberal but im also not a deficit monkey that says "just put it on the CC we'll get the money from somewhere eventually". Supply side economics looked pretty good when we were able to print the worlds reserve completely unfettered. The reagan years will never happen agsin because the rest of the world will never huckleberry for us like they did back then. And without those foreign entities slurping off our debt.....we'd just invite 3rd world inflation levels if we tried it.

and the economy today may be intermediarly boosted by irrstional exhuberance but it takes years if not DECADES of sustained growth to accuratrly judge anybody policies. Short term stimulus of an economy is EASY.....but if it gsrners a rubber bsnd snap bsck in a few years what was it worth?? just makes a very select people a good chunk of money but tge rest of us suffer when the bubble pops.

Tell that to Obama so he will stop trying to take credit for the economy under Trump...

That will kind of depend on the economy if the Democrats take over. And sweep the houses. I doubt he'll take credit for the upcoming recession

And isn't it just a little bit early to start preparing for the post-apocalypse? Yes I know Mad Max and Zager and Evans 2525 are groundbreaking societal dystopian predictions but we aren't quite to the point of machines doing everything while 95% of the human beings lay around ingesting hallucinogens and waiting for food deliveries. As much as the DNC would love it.

I wouldn't be opposed with one caveat: it's taken from the bezos' and soros' and Zuckerbergs' of the world. The ordinary person pays nothing. And it's not a sliding payscale. I get the same, on top of my income, as an indigent freeloader in the metropolitan housing projects. .

That's really unlikely to happen. Since it's probably Democrats pushing for it, I suspect they'll want to pay more or less depending on your rank in the victim heirarchy.

Obama is a narcissistic a-hole. Trump is the first American president that can  legitimately take credit for the success of the economy under a sitting president,  although good argument can be made for Reagan.

To jog your memory...recall Obama and Biden both were telling us that the 1% growth rate at the time was the "new normal, so get used to it?"

Those two told us that America’s best days were behind us, that the past records of economic growth were unreal, yet Obama has the gall to think he is to be credited for an economy and unemployment rate unseen in our lifetimes?

Obama had zero interest in boosting the US economy, only the global economy. You know it's true.

Obama said manufacturing jobs were never coming back. "Hows Trump gonna do it, wave a magic wand?"

Illegals aren't filling these jobs nor the bulk of jobs most "normal" Americans are going to lose.      Not that I don't believe the entire border, INS and the like require an overhaul including the asylum and security measures.

Point being - you have corporate tax rates slashed, less money for local and state infrastructure then you have to take into account subsidies.   And, as per this example, you have multiple industries working to even further automate their processes = loss of jobs = loss of tax revenue.

Not ideal all around.

er... okay... those were corporate tax rates on the FEDERAL LEVEL. Not local and state taxes? The more federal tax you levy on companies, the less money they have for capital growth and accruing resources...

economics was not one of my favortie subjects.....but I believe the state and local taxes rates would stay the same.

seems like you are making my own argument. These jobs are going away and like Springsteen said and they aren't coming back. And the illegals are coming in without those jobs to fill. Not only that but wait until they figure out a way to pick grapes with a machine. Well more efficiently actually since they already do.

automation is the future. We can't stop it. We couldn't stop it with the assembly line or the electric hair dryer or the vacuum cleaner or the washing machine and we won't stop it now.

not ideal at all. You are correct. But...
