Observations from the 10th practice of training camp

After spending the last week practicing under the sunshine and scenery of West Virginia, the Browns certainly looked happy to be back in Berea on Tuesday for their 10th practice of training camp.

"Obviously, it's exciting for us to be back up in Berea in front of our fans," head coach Kevin Stefanski said. "It's amazing the amount of juice that you get from playing in front of your own fans. I can promise you the players will get a little bit more pep in their step with our fans out here."

The bleachers were packed and the energy was palpable as players took the field for their final tune-up before the Hall of Fame Game on Thursday in Canton. Players interacted with fans calling their names, and a few eye-popping plays drew some loud cheers, too.

We're going to cover the latter — and more — below.

- This was the Browns' third padded practice of training camp and second where there were actual team drills. The intensity was at its peak for camp so far, and that was evident right away when CB M.J. Emerson Jr. delivered a clean hit on WR Donovan Peoples-Jones on the first play of the first team drill period. The hit knocked the ball loose from Peoples-Jones and was a nice play, although no other "tackle" the rest of the day featured that level of physicality.

- The practice appeared to be a stalemate between the offense and defense — no one "won" the day and both sides made good plays. Rookie fifth-round CB Cam Mitchell had one of the most notable plays of the afternoon when he intercepted QB Deshaun Watson and tallied his first interception of camp. Rookie third-round WR Cedric Tillman made the play of the day for the offense with a diving catch down the left sidelines on a deep ball from QB Kellen Mond during a seven-on-seven period.

- CB A.J. Green III tallied a pass breakup for the third straight practice. The fourth-year veteran has been around the ball a lot through the first week of camp.

- WR Amari Cooper had his most active day of camp so far and caught the first two passes of a seven-on-seven situation period where the offense started the ball from the 35 with 1:30 on the clock. He also caught several other passes from Watson throughout the day and, to no surprise, was constantly open.

- QB Joshua Dobbs and WR Austin Watkins had the longest completion of the day on a pass that traveled at least 50 yards. Dobbs attempted the throw while on the run from pressure and found Watkins, who was standing alone down the field and secured the catch.

- Watson and TE David Njoku left practices at The Greenbrier showcasing a strong connection, and they carried that over to Tuesday when they connected on a first-down pass during an 11-on-11 2-minute drill period.

- Peoples-Jones also made one of the smoothest catches of camp so far on a back-shoulder throw from Watson. Peoples-Jones had S Juan Thornhill in tight coverage, but he still managed to turn around and secure the ball before he was pushed past the right sideline. Peoples-Jones has continued to win contested catch opportunities throughout camp.

- Mond and QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson will each be the two starters for the Hall of Fame Game against the Jets, and both players looked good in their final practice. They each led their respective units down the field for field goals in the 11-on-11 two-minute drill period, which concluded the practice.

Listening to 92.3 on the way to work this morning, and apparently Myles was just abusing Jed Wills all day long.

"If Myles played for another team, we'd be in big trouble"

Myles is on his way to Canton, but Wills is a first rounder from Alabama. He shouldn't be getting abused by anyone by now.

Wills has been my biggest worry on the offense.  That's why we're going to have to assign a babysitting TE to line up to his left.  I know it sounds crazy but I'd like to see us line-up Dawand Jones to the left of Wills as a TE that mostly blocks.   Again, the former high school basketball star at 6'8" prolly developed good hands catching passes in traffic as a big man.  He also probably has a big wing span just in case we dare to ever use him like NE used Mike Vrable in certain offensive packages/situations.

Same here.

Andrew Spayde reviews Day 9 of Browns Training Camp. Let’s think some thoughts.

My primary takeaway from the first nine days of camp, and it was driven home on Tuesday in Berea, is that the defense, after lagging behind in early work, has caught and exceeded the offense. Myles Garrett and the pass rush, combined with a secondary that is rounding into shape, have been wrecking the passing offense often enough that is starting to cause concerns about the state of the offense. Part of this is the natural push and pull of training camp when each unit is on a different schedule to be ready for the regular season.(include given off day) Given the enormous pressure on the offense, however, it is worrying to see that side of the ball struggle to move the ball against the defense or fail to put the ball in the end zone in red zone drills.(Sat. & Tues.)

For now, we will save our worrying until at least the joint practices against the Eagles.

There's been a swing since Goodwin (in OTA's) & Coop went out 4 days in TC. Coop's now back. TE Jordan Akins has been out 4 straight days. TE Harrison Bryant has missed 2 straight.(doubt neither play Jets) We're back to Schwartz as our speed WR. WR Jaelon Darden has missed the last 2 camp days 😕  Tillman, Bell, Baldwin 👀 w/Schwartz.. interested to see if even Jakeem Grant plays WR/returner, coming off his last season injury?  Don't hold the ball to long Mon--d !

Good to be back !  In the books,

PSG1 Browns 21   Jets  16  F       Seeing Joe Thomas induction to HOF, off my bucket list !  Great time !

Browns back to work Sunday,

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said before Sunday's practice.

"We're still [doing] installation, so we're just getting out of our installation on offense, defense, and special teams," "So [defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz is] putting in new blitzes, we're putting in new couple new runs, passes, those type of things. ... And again, that first Hall of Fame game comes at you fast. ... So just continuing to teach and make sure that we're not skipping any steps."

This week will be about as close to a "normal" week of training camp as the Browns will have this month. They are scheduled to practice in front of the fans Sunday, Monday and Wednesday, with their lone home preseason game at 7:30 p.m. Friday against the Washington Commanders.

** Stefanski acknowledged Sunday he's already got an idea of how the quarterback rotation will work for Friday's preseason game against the Commanders. However, that will not be disclosed to the public any earlier than he absolutely has to divulge it.

  • Superheroes – August 7, practice begins today at 2 pm

Good Monday morning !

Two remaining Preseason games left. How bout we end this Camp, with both SB opponents from last seasons SB on the Browns schedule..

This week the Browns have 2 inter-squad practices where the Philly Eagles fly.. Good to see Monday & Tuesdays updates should come after working hours, with scrimmage start times of 5 PM. Thursday's game is on NFL Network at 7:30 PM.

Not sure if NFL network has access? but, Browns Twitter & Cleveland.com should have up to the minute updates from Twitter (X) while practice is live for real 🏈 junkies..

Controlled practices are hopes of players remaining upright 🙏  Yeah, Lets do That !

They'll probably get better/more extensive evaluations from the live scrimmages with Philly than the game on Thursday. They'll have more opportunity to see the 1's vrs 1's and 2's vrs 2's.  Can't wait to hear how they do... Hopefully there aren't any serious injuries.  Most of the teams do these so it isn't like the Browns and Eagles are inventing anything for those worrying about the injuries...

alot of good info there MR. Gumby and thank you

Thanks!

Talked with multiple sources who said both Garrett and Ward will be fine. One source said Garrett got nicked in the back of the leg and going in was precautionary

looking at Cabot's short video.. (whom reports foot) got my interest.. It looks like Garrett's left foot or leg this time.. Not on his same Pro bowl toe injury on his right foot..   either way we need that stud from Week 1 and on ! Cabot also reported Hudson went in for Conklin at RT.. They must feel Hudson is still ahead of Jones in that scenario.

Sounds like we got some good work out of today

edit- @Flugel  Wills likely accounted for some of these DE sacks.. the better daily reports are rolling in late

Appreciate the info about the injuries Gumbs.  It sounds like Conklin has a concussion, which I'm guessing shouldn't keep him out of the line-up on opening day.  I don't think he needs to prove anything in either of these last 2 pre-season games.

The practices with Philly are a necessary evil. To your point Gumbs - they got in some good work today.  I wonder how well the team matched up with Philly today.   What went well?  What needs work?  The usual questions we want answers to this time of year.  I'd love to know how Wills did...

Eagles took some ‘cheap shots’ at Deshaun Watson and other Browns on Day 2, guard Joel Bitonio says

  • Published: Aug. 15, 2023, 5:36 p.m.

twitter

PHILADELPHIA — The Super Bowl runner-up Eagles came out an imposed their will on the Browns on Day 2 of their joint practices, but Joel Bitonio says they went too far, taking ‘cheap shots’ on both sides of the ball at times.

Specifically, he was miffed that the Eagles played it too fast and loose with Deshaun Watson, with defensive end Josh Sweat at one point knocking the ball out of his hand on a would-be strip-sack.

‘You’re not supposed to that,” Bitonio said.

The practice, conducted in 89-degree heat with a “feels-like” temperature of 96 degrees, also got chippy about a half hour into the session when safety Reed Blankenship — who picked off two Watson passes on Tuesday and one on Monday — ran over running back Demetric Felton when returning his first interception on a ball tipped by linebacker Zach Cunningham, and a scuffle ensued.

Recommended Browns stories

Man-mountain Dawand Jones (6-8, 374) got involved in some pushing and shoving to defend his teammates, and after players from both teams joined the scrum, it was quickly broken up.

“We’re going into this week trying to get better in practice and work and sometimes there are some cheap shots and things like that where you want to defend yourself,” Bitonio said. “I don’t know the exact situation, but there were a couple shots today where we’re trying to make sure we’re getting the best out of practice and not fighting. But it was just a little heated second day. It always gets a little bit more fired up.”

Kevin Stefanski, who ran clean joint practices with the Eagles last year in Cleveland and hoped to do it again, intervened and calmed things down

“We don’t want to fight out here,” Bitonio said. “We want to get better and when two teams are competing, things are going to get fired up. So it happens. But coach tried to calm us down and when he has the offense and their defense, we try and control those situations.

Bitonio said he felt the tempers flaring before the scuffle ensued.

“Oh yeah,” he said. “I mean that’s why you do two days because three days it’d be a blood bath the last day, so even two days gets a little bit chippy the second day. You go back, you watch the film, ‘you’re like, oh, we’ve got to do this better, or they got to do this better’ and the next day’s going to be a little bit more ramped up.”

More so than the fight, Bitonio was miffed that the Eagles broke the rules and touched his unsuspecting quarterback.

“I mean it’s just in our practice, you protect the quarterback,” he said. “You don’t want to come close to the quarterback, you don’t want to take cheap shots, things like that where there might’ve been a couple of questionable plays both ways today.”

Myles Garrett, who participated only in individual drills because of his foot injury from Monday,

“I didn’t see cheap shots myself,” Garrett said. “I’m not saying that they didn’t happen, but I didn’t see any. I saw there were some skirmishes on the offensive field, so check in and I know they’ll be better and I know the older guys, they have a lot of vets that will help them continue to practice the right way and have good habits.

“We’ll do the same on our side. Fights not going to start from just one side doing anything. It takes a little bit from both, so we both need to improve. We’ll be able to get out here and get good work.”

Despite the Eagles defense beating the Browns offense on Tuesday — including the two interceptions by Blankenship of Watson — Bitonio saw progress from the offense. Blankenship’s second pick came in the back of the end zone on a pass intended for tight end Jordan Akins. Cornerback Zech McPhearson also got his hands on a Watson pass intended for Donovan Peoples-Jones in the end zone, but was out of bounds.

“The last two-minute period today, they obviously got the best of us, but I think there was some growth,” Bitonio said. “Some guys stepped up today for us. You get a feel against different rushers because in practice I’m going against a couple guys a day here. So you feel some different rushes, you feel some different techniques. They have one of the better D lines in the league, maybe some say the best. We have a pretty good D line too, so it’s good to go out there and battle and test out some of your techniques.”

Bitonio isn’t overly alarmed about the Browns struggling in the red zone both here and at home, except for one or two days when they dominated.

“We’re working through it,” he said. “Our defense sees the concepts that we’re running in practice, so they saw throughout OTAs, they saw throughout minicamp, we have some good players on defense, so they find some things.

“Today we didn’t convert as much as we wanted, but it’s stuff we’re working through. You want to see your defense compete early in camp because they usually have a step up on the offense. But I’m not concerned at this moment about it.”

The Browns were also without right tackle Jack Conklin, who’s in the concussion protocol, and receiver Elijah Moore, who was limited to individual drills because of his rib injury. The Browns without Moore would be like the Eagles without A.J. Brown or Devonta Smith.

“He’s going to be one of our, I want to say Queen on the chess board, they can move everywhere,” Bitonio said. “They want to get him the ball. They realize he’s an explosive player. He’s played some running back in his past and I think they want to use our weapons. Whatever our strengths are, they want to use it and he’s a good complement to Amari (Cooper), to David (Njoku), to (Donovan Peoples-Jone), to Nick (Chubb), so it’s going to be good. I know he hasn’t been out there. It’d been nice to see him out there the last couple of days, but we’ll get him healthy for Week One.”

The starters won’t have to worry about tempers flaring during the game against then Eagles here Thursday night. Stefanski will rest his starters and play only backups.

According to Philly Inquirer's E.J. Smith, Watson threw three interceptions in the team's joint training camp practices with the Philadelphia Eagles. All three interceptions were to Eagles safety Reed Blankenship

Reports claim Watson has been sacked multiple times and that the Eagles' defense "put on a show" against the Browns in joint practices.

Watson needs to rebound if the Browns are going to do anything this season.

The defense prepares to take on the Browns' offense in a 7-on-7 session, and Deshaun Watson starts off hot. The veteran striped a throw to tight end Jordan Akins on a double move to the back left corner of the end zone, and sandwiched a pair of other completions with a toss to Cedric Tillman on a slot fade in the same spot
