Especially for a QB whose done basically "NOTHING" since we brought him here.. The performance of lack thereof hasn't come anywhere close to meeting the value we gave up for his sorry ass!

It's fine to think that way as a fan.  You can think what you want.

If Nick actually did that and I was Berry, I would tell him it is obvious it isn't going to work out and trade or release him ASAP.  It doesn't matter if I like him more.  You don't fuck with other people's money.

I don't disagree with anything here.

But let me play devil's advocate...

What if Chubb's angle, or anyone in a similar contractual circumstance, takes a look at Watson and essentially says, "He's got way more wiggle room in his contract. He needs to be the first to create some space." ?

One players contract has nothing to do with another's or their health situation.  IMO it would be a dick move for one player to suggest another player take a cut in pay.  You don't try to screw with another person's bag.

I just want to see Chubb get locked in and let the chips fall where they may...

    I think we all do.

However, it will depend on his rehab projection and his willingness to restructure.  If the rehab looks like a week 8 return, and he isn't willing to extend to give some relief to this years salary number, we probably won't have much of a choice.

I don't expect he will take that stance and will work out a team friendly deal.

I am a fan of the Cleveland Browns.  I root for the Browns over and above any individual player, no matter how much I might like that player.  I have Browns gear, but don't have player posters/pictures plaster up on my bedroom walls like i did when I was 11.

As you say, once we get past the bulk of free agency we can take the 'IN' off of 'infinite' as we might be able to rule out certain positions in the early part of our draft.  Once we get into those 6th & 7th round picks, anything goes again.

BTW ballpeen, as of January 8th I am, like you, retired.  I highly recommend it.  Of course, now I have kidney stones.  :(  I don't highly recommend that.  Right now I'm in what scientists would call,  A meta stable state.  But when I'm having an attack, I wish for the vacuum decay of the universe.

Welcome to retirement.  It's nice when everyday is the weekend.

Sorry to hear about the stones.

Thanks for this thread and to those who put effort into it.  But it's hard for me to get excited about a pick late in the second round...until the second round is actually going on.  I mean, almost an infinite bunch of scenarios exist with our first pick.

With as many selections to be made before our pick and how FA might impact the draft as far as any needs considerations that might come in to play for all teams, I'd say it is infinite.

Well, that argument can be made.  But I still think that if there's a position coach out there that you've been wanting...and you can get him, then do it...even though you don't have the coordinator yet.

    I agree.

There guys being hired have more to do with the offensive concept we wish to attain over any real specifics about the position.  It all points to hiring a coordinator who will fit the new concept.

Stefanski is the only guy who counts.  If he wants the coach, then we will hire him.

If we found the coordinator we wanted, he would be on bord by now.  This is looking like the guy we want is still coaching his players in the playoffs.

Kubiac is my odds on favorite  to be offered the position.

I don't ever remember the Brownies running weakside QB power like an old single wing from an empty motion previous to week 1 against Cincy.   Closest I can remember was the QB sweep against PIT to burn clock and make us playoff bound in 2020.

While I don't have the numbers, I'm confident in saying there was more gun and 11 personnel usage with Watson than previous QBs.   This concluded with the epic win over the ravens.

West Coast is a relative term.  It generally means timing throws, which are structured and layered within every offense in football. And with that, a certain play call string language that mostly meant individually tagging receivers with numbered routes.  Which might not be a predominant in the Browns lingo, but you'll find things derived from it in just about every offense as well. No different than romance languages sharing similarities by having a common ancestor in Latin.

Also worth pointing out, one of the most efficient and consistent offenses in the NFL during his time as a head coach has been younger Shanahan in San Fran.  The same team who, last I checked, was top 2 in 21 personnel usage with a vehicle driven by under center ball action and timing throws.

Odd how an old dog can still get it done with some old tricks that are windowed dressed appropriately.

Re: Stef and Van Pelt.  They didn't get Flaccos arm hit as he was trying to bomb a post-corner that ended up in a DBs lap.  And they sure as fuck didn't make Flacco lock onto a primary with a little stick-out, believing he had man all the way instead of reading the strong side hook correctly.

Any heavy handed critique lobbed at the coaching staff after how they over performed this season is idiotic at best.

Maybe so, but we fired coaches.  Something wasn't working in the eyes of the people who count.  AVP was tasked with changing the O.  It didn't happen and we kept running the same old 20th century plan.

  8. Before the season started we saw reports that the browns o was going to be different and exciting.  Once the season started, it was the same O.

Stefanski and more on point, Van Pelt can't get away from 20th century, west coast offense.  If you look at Watson, most of the college QB's heading in to the pro's, they play a 21st century O.  It is shotgun based.  AVP couldn't adjust to getting us in a shotgun based O, and Stump can't coach backs running inside zone runs out of a shotgun.

We can't expect to get the most out of our O running a 90's offense in 2024.  That is the same as a team in the 80's running an O out of the 50's.

    Time to up the thinking.

  9. If I was in charge, I would tell all teams that by 2030 no team could host a post season game unless it was in a domed stadium .  There is no excuse to play the game in crap conditions.

Teams and local communities could still have open air stadiums. They just wouldn't be able to host a game.  The game would have to be played at a neutral site.  Season ticket holders would still have the rights to their tickets.  They would just have to travel to the neutral site.

Stef can kiss coach of the year goodbye after that game. Because Ryans was also in the running for it.

I think all the season awards are regular season accomplishments. They are voted on before the playoffs begin.  I know they do it that way in baseball.

From the above, who should the Browns re-sign?

I just deleted players from your list as shown about.  There are a few guys I deleted but wouldn't mind if we signed them back...Proche might be an example of that.  Bryant might be a guy I left on the list who won't get an offer.

Dwayne Haskins threw for 4831 yards, 50 touchdowns vs 8 interceptions in 2018.

Justin Fields threw for 41 touchdowns vs 3 interceptions in 2019, and ran for nearly 500 yards with another 10 touchdowns.

It sucks Ohio State missed out on Burrow's fantastic senior year, but it was the only really good season he had in college football, while Haskins and Fields did the above as a sophomores.

    Hoorta's got an excellent point.

I understand.  It could still be called a poor coaching decision.  It's not Burrows fault he didn't play those other years.  If he had, could his numbers have been similar or better?  Based on what has happened at the NFL level, it fair to speculate he would have played as well or better .

  13. Yep....Gip was a good guy.  We both enjoyed history and had many conversations on the subject.  I have also toured the Polk home in Columbia. Very interesting.  The tour of Andrew Jackson's "Hermitage" is worthwhile as well.

Columbia is maybe a 40 mile drive south of Nashville.

Schools like Alabama and Ohio State recruit themselves.  Regardless of who the coach is...  Any four star recruit with NFL ambitions is (usually) going to want to play there. They have the luxury of turning away top tier talent. Look no farther than Joe Burrow, who was riding the bench at Ohio State, transferred and won a National Championship at LSU.

Could be called a poor coaching decision.

I'm honestly shocked that David Bell hasn't produced more. I was happy when they drafted him.

I am disappointed as well.  I think the guy has good enough hands.  His feet are the problem.  He just can't get open.  He is just a little too slow in straight line speed and isn't a quick twitch guy who can get open because his movements are fast.  Some guys can start, turn, stop on a dime.  David is more like a guy who can do it on a large tractor tire.

  16. Funny.  Today when watching games, other than a select few I can't tell who the players are by number.  I know many of the numbers by who wore the number. #13 is always Frank Ryan.

RIP Dr. Frank Ryan.  You accomplished much while on this journey.

You're probably right. I still remember Leroy Kelly and Jim Brown wheeling Gene Hickerson up on the stage in Canton when the poor guy had no idea who he was, where he was and why he was in front of so many people back in 2007.  Waiting 34 years after the guy retired is no way to honor someone that made 6 Pro Bowls in 15 years blocking for HOF Backs like Jim Brown and Leroy Kelly.   IMO, that's a committee full of irresponsible sportswriters that don't deserve such a privilege.  They only made a brat like Terrell Owens wait 8 years from his retirement; and how did he act afterward?  As expected, far less than appreciative anyway...

I went to the Owens induction ceremony here in Chattanooga.  He played his college ball here.  I saw him many times, so I am probably not the best person to seek agreement.

    Owens was pretty damn good.

The Miami  Sound Machine played here at the Riverbend Festival in maybe 1995.   My wife was a board member and we had stage seats for the show....like 30 feet from the performance, side stage.   It was a stormy, windy night.  Several times the updrafts took her dress up above her head.

Got to admit, she looked pretty darn good.
