  1. Browns historical draft picks Berry hired at Browns as GM: 1/27/20. 2020 NFL draft : 4/23-25. I don't want to give Berry a pass on 2020 because he had nearly 3 full months to prep. Berry has had 10 picks in the first 3 rounds. His only obvious hits have been every single first pick he's made [Wills, Newsome, Emerson] and one more - JOK. 2020: Wills, Delpit, Elliot, Phillips. Hit/Miss/Miss/Miss 2021: Newsome, JOK, Schwartz. Hit/Hit/Miss 2022: Emerson, Wright, Bell. Hit / Paging @tiamat63 / Bench Splinters I want those last two to work out, but it's not looking great. Berry does deserve credit for the day3 picks in 2022 -- Winfrey, York, Ford, and Thomas have all flashed so far and look like solid depth.. which is a lot more than you can say about prior drafts. As well, Berry deserves credit for identifying Pocic and pulling the trigger.. Pocic has played far better than anyone else would have guessed. But his hit rate isn't anything close to "great" -- An actual recent Great Draft Class is Seattle's 2022.
  2. Important note on 2023 salary cap: Given the 2023 increases to our top guys we need to be able to roll the current 2022 space onto next year. For more detail read the link. Even after including rolling all the 2022 space [33M] onto 2023, we're still left w only 9M space in 2023 to sign rookies and FA. With no first-round that seems doable, but still rough and doesn't leave much space for someone big like Payne unless he'll take 1M 2023 salary. Current salary committed for 2023: 244M. 2023 cap: 225M.
  3. They are who we thought they were: Draft Profiles: Jacob Phillips // Togiai // Elliot // Delpit. All the negatives with very few of the positives. Fun quote from the Delpit link: "Misses inordinate amount of tackles in a variety of ways". This is fine! One additional failing on this D staff is the lack of improvement except for very few -- JOK, Emerson, Ward have to be considered exceptions.
  4. this isn't fixed with just one guy -- Payne would be amazing of course. But we can't only add payne -- our performance would be better if we had 3 guys beside Winfrey all above 55 rating even if they offered little vs pass other than preventing QB from stepping up. Payne, Winfrey, and 2 rookies rated 36 isn't changing much.... Only thing for next year's cap.. 7.5 of Hooper's dead is sitting there [he was also 3.5 in 2022]. But that's done after 2023. Mayfield's 10.5 dead also is only 2022. IMHO Payne is likely worth the risk, and if WAS would take a 4th plus allowing Browns to negotiate the extension, i'd do that in a heartbeat..
  5. PJ Walker delivers the best QB performance of Panthers' season to date vs Bucs. They already had their future on the roster.. Only negative here is the lowered 2023 draft compensation coming to us.
  6. All issues must always be simple to fix and One Magical Person is the cause of - or solution to - everything. Life couldn't be complex - it just couldn't - and if I repeat this often enough, reality will bend to my wishes!
  7. One of Stef's big things has been loyalty. However, his loyalty to Woods now affects perception of him ... because Woods is a smoking crater of incompetence, and if Stef defends him then it's on Stef to not see that the trigger needs to be pulled. It's certainly not "only" FO -- because in no way does FO ever make decisions in a vacuum -- but anyone in leadership who doesn't see that their lack of talent&$$ into DI affects the entirety of the D much more than they had originally planned does need to go. Alex Wright // Travis Jones Some positivity in the post: Martin Emerson - it's higher than you thought it would be
  8. Good Lord Ethan Pocic Of Course Bitonio Are You Kidding Me Froholdt - Only 61 snaps.. but still Conklin Teller Hudson - 163 snaps is a pretty good sample size. The kids are going to be OK. OBR Important Read: Building An Above-Avg IDL -- a study of the top 16 teams' 2023 salary spent, draft capital invested, and resulting PFF this year for each rostered IDL. Can debate relative merit of rating method, but it's the same method applied to all teams so any error is consistent.
  9. Something positive this way comes -- OT Jedrick is the NFL's top OT in passpro this season. Conklin at 8th seems not shabby after a year of rehab.
  10. Quarterbacks win games. Run fits win rings. DL definitions, alignments, and techniques
  11. There is no "tying hands" with analytics. This strawman of "analytics makes calls" --- has never been the situation outside of the strawman created for the purpose of taking a position "against" that same strawman. Exactly nothing has changed from before the word analytics was used. Analytics is a new word for information -- that's it. The same people make the decisions.. because the same people have responsibility for the decisions. Berry deals for players only after agreements with Woods and Stef.. and those decisions on defense especially have been terrible in multiple recent years. Look, even if the coaches actually don't agree on a player... that happened on teams [and in companies] long before anyone bothered with data and everything was purely feelings, so once again, nothing changed with data. Second, although it's an important corollary, haven't seen any D players really develop under Woods or assistants. So they make bad game-day calls and make up for it by not being able to improve player skills to deal with those bad calls. [For one shining example: Look at the progress of our wonderful rookie Alex Wright and his adventures in bull-rushing. Or don't, it will cause you to start day-drinking.] Great stuff!
  12. And when you realize the coaching is the only problem and not the players.. This can't be unlike dealing with a headstrong teenager who won't listen --- "OK, you've now failed multiple times doing it your way, are you ready to listen to someone who knows what they're talking about?" To be clear, it's Lerner who is the stupid immature teenager in this analogy. And whatever you do, you just aren't allowed to consider the notion that he's far from the only million/billionaire who has exactly zero clues at anything other than the company-specific multitude of scams that got him his personal fortune...
  13. Direct copy-paste from ESPN's analysis: The Browns finished the 2021 season in the top five in lowest opposing QBR (51.1), fewest net yards per passing attempt (5.97) and highest pass rush win rate (49.9%). With virtually every starter back, that was supposed to translate into an elite defensive unit this season. Instead, Cleveland's defense has fallen apart. The Browns are well outside the top 10 in all three of the aforementioned categories. But most telling, they now rank 31st in defensive efficiency. The Browns do have the talent to turn it around. Yet nothing about their performances so far suggests that they will. The part ESPN doesn't say: If the Browns do have the talent [and I think we can agree they actually do] then the difference is.. Coaching. And FO decisions to start UDFA's at DI, but I repeat everyone.
  14. Let's see what Josh Dobbs brings to the table. Then when he's terrible, in 3 weeks we can go back to Brissett. And some short number of weeks after that, DW will be ready. Feel the excitement.
  15. Browns sign NT Tyeler Davison and his 6'2 305# frame to PS. He was cut by Falcons in a cap dump before this season. Davison radar chart // RAS Now do Linval Joseph, which he should have done at the start.. Take the chance that his 330# and otherworldly athleticism hasn't lost a step..
  16. Matt Rhule has been fired Clearly, Rhule was the only force holding back the Legend Of Baker Mayfield! BM and his league-worst 16.9 QBR will be unstoppable forthwith!
  17. Deion Jones current contract // Jones PFF - he was 34.6 last season, which he played with a shoulder injury, but was pretty good most seasons before that. Per Twitter from Pelissero, Falcons take a 12.14 dead hit this season and nobody has any charge after 2022. About 1.39 for rest of season onto Browns books. If he's fully healed from the shoulder, looks like a good move
  18. All you need to know is.. the current group of DT's would barely [barely!] start at Ohio State. And they wouldn't be stars. Woods might get fired, but I don't know what he could do consistently with the barely-D1-college level of DI this FO decided to roster. The consistent result is every team becomes the 1986 49ers with Roger Craig and Tom Rathman each getting 100 yards.
  19. Nothing more fun than seeing Vea and the newly drafted Walker drop into zone and.. not be a vulnerability. Walker of course is ridiculous enough at 280# to be able to shut down slot receivers. Just like all the DT's at Cleveland.. The frustrating part is that all the FA DI who are capable of shutting down the run & be more than nonexistent against the pass.. were ignored by the FO. Examples are Akiem Hicks, DJ Jones, Joseph-Day. Instead we have a collection who are capable of neither rushing the passer nor stopping the run.
  20. This is what happens when you keep trading picks for players.. QB is one thing, "everyone" is problems. Sure, they won a SB so if that's the goal, great, but in the very next year they're not going to make the playoffs
  21. We'll also struggle if we've proven we can run but Stef's playcalling anticipates peak DW. Sure, because our DL is somehow by plan a first-ballot hall-of-famer and a collection of effort-based backups.
  22. Those first heads should be each and every one OK'ing a DI room made up of rookies and guys who failed on another team..
  23. This game should give us plenty of DL reps to review on our rookies including Winfrey who is active against the Falcons.
  24. The decision to eliminate the pro bowl is unquestionably correct. Look no further than Tyler Eifert to understand why. Tyler was coming off his career year and justifiably looking to get paid.. blew out his ankle in that game, and not only didn't he get paid, his career until forced retirement was a sequence of 1-year near-minimum contracts spending most of his time on the trainers table.
