With the first preseason game under our belts, we're rounding third and heading home on our march towards the start of the 2023 Cleveland Browns season, as we are only Anthony Henry days left! Henry was a 2001 fourth round pick out of South Florida, and the cornerback hit the ground running his rookie season, grabbing 10 interceptions on the year, including four in one game vs Detroit (I was there!). After the 2004 season, Henry would leave in free agency and go to Dallas for another four seasons, before ending his career in Detroit after the 2009 season.

I posted this photo to remind all of you how ugly the Butch Davis era orange jerseys were. Oof.

And some real good,  no greatest are not far off.    :D

Happy weekend to most of you, as we've now arrived at Marion Motley days until the start of the 2023 Cleveland Browns season. Motley was born in Georgia, but he and his family moved to Canton when he was 3 years old. He starred at Canton McKinley, where the Bulldogs went 25-3 during his time there. The three losses? All to rival Massillon Washington High School, coached by one Paul Brown. Motley then went to historically black college South Carolina State, before transferring to the University of Nevada.   ★ During WWII he would leave Nevada and play football at the Great Lakes Training Center, coached by Paul Brown. Brown would recruit Motley to pair up with Bill Willis to be two of the four black players to break the color barrier in 1946 (the other two being Kenny Washington and Woody Strode of the LA Rams).

Motley would play fullback and linebacker for the Browns from 1946-1953. The Browns would go to the Championship game in every year he played for them, winning titles from 1946-1950, and losing three tough games in 1951-1953. He ran for 4720 yards for a staggering 5.7 average and 31 touchdowns. He came back in 1955 to play one more year for the Pittsburgh Steelers at linebacker before retiring for good. He would be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1968.

Otto Graham believed that Marion Motley was the superior fullback to Jim Brown. Motley was a running, receiving and blocking monster.

★ OH yes #36  (or #76, take your pick) Marion Motley  an absolute bulldozer with the ball in his right arm   -or-   as a blocker protecting anyone else.  I can see why Mr Otto Graham was correct Marion Motley might have been the GOAT  there as the greatest ever runner/blocker even better than the  GOAT  Jim Brown.

And they were  both Cleveland BROWNS.   Another thing anytime I see or hear of the Great Lakes Training Center  in association with coach Paul Brown  whether it's football or baseball  during  WWII I remember ....... These were the guys that kept the NFL going and beyond into the 1950s and its meteoric rise to today.

I remember it from my dad's run through his Great Lakes and WWII experiences whether it's Paul Brown or Bob Feller they were the absolute best and represented Cleveland well.    A little more about the Great Lakes Training Center and WWII and sports for you.  ..... then back to  #35 on our countdown  to September.

▪︎~~~~~~~~~~▪︎

★ The best team in baseball in 1942 didn’t get to play in the World Series. That’s because the players had other jobs to do that were more important.

*(Sorry if I'm going on with this but it is a favorite topic for me .... the history of sports.)

But the real stockpile of talent for the Navy team was on the pitching staff. Former Detroit star Schoolboy Rowe served as a coach as well as a pitcher. Then there were big-time major league stars Johnny VanderMeer, George McQuillan, Virgil Trucks, Johnny Schmitz, and Walt Masterson.

The Blue Jackets also boasted the greatest pitcher in the world, albeit briefly. Before he was shipped out to sea, Bob Feller  showed off his blazing fastball in a Great Lakes uniform.

* In 1942 the Great Lakes team posted a 52-10-1 record in games against college programs, minor league teams, other service teams, and even major league clubs.

During the second World War, the Naval Station at Great Lakes, Illinois on the north side of Chicago was home to some of the greatest ballplayers on the planet. These were major leaguers who had stepped away from their big league jobs to serve their country. Their leader for three years was Mickey Cochrane, the former star catcher and manager of the Detroit Tigers, a man whom the secretary of the Navy had tapped for a special job......

......Great Lakes was opened in 1911 after initially being funded by Theodore Roosevelt several years earlier. Sailors were trained there during World War I and in the intervening years leading up to WWII. But the station was actually closed during the Great Depression briefly before it was rescued by Illinois congressmen. It was during World War II that it became a city unto itself. At its peak there were more than 100,000 sailors on the site during World War II. Great Lakes was the largest military training station in the world at that time. Spread over 160 acres at its peak, there were thousands of barracks, classrooms, and training fields, as well as more than 90 swimming pools and their own fire department and water works department.  |---> continued at GLTC -->

When we really think about it - a Fullback is what it says it is.  A back that does the full work load of blocking, running and receiving (ie; Larry Csonka).  I always refer to Jim Brown as a RB while often specifying he was a power runner that could also catch the ball when needed.  That said, he could also jet and outrun people when that was warranted. Nobody ever seems to remember seeing him throw a block; which is probably why he remained healthy enough to never miss a game.  What I don't want people to start doing some day (and I know it'll happen) is people will start saying "yeah Jim Brown was the best FB but this guy is the best RB."   They've already era snobbed Otto Graham - a guy that led his to the Championship Game every single year of his Pro Football career.  He won 7 of the 10 Championships and 6 of 10 were in the NFL where he won 3 of the 6.  That was after the NFL couldn't wait to see how Cleveland handled the alleged REAL COMPETITION.  How could we sum up going to the Championship Title Game every season in the 1st 6 years they participated in that league?  I'd say they aced it! 😁

My dad loved to tell me and my brother about Otto Graham and Marion Motley so this was a fun post to read above.

May I interrupt your observance of an invisible guy in the sky to inform you that we are now Jerome Harrison days until the start of the 2023 Cleveland Browns season? Now, there might have been a few Browns players who had longer, more overall productive years with the Browns who wore #35 than Harrison, but for one day, well..... damn.

Harrison was a 5th round Browns pick of the 2006 Draft that also brought Lawrence Vickers, and he was a backup for his first three seasons (450 yards rushing combined) but would take over as starter after the departure of Jamal Lewis, and would go bonkers down the stretch of the 2009 season. On the road vs the Kansas City Chiefs, he would erupt for team record 286 yards rushing, and three touchdowns, obliterating Jim Browns game record.

During the following season, the Browns would trade the 5'9, 205lb RB to Philadelphia. In 2011, while with Detroit, the Lions attempted to trade him back to the Eagles and Harrison would fail the physical because a brain tumor was found. The tumor was benign, but complications from the surgery would end Harrison's career. He would rush for 1681 yards for an impressive 4.7 per carry average.

~    And I might add two  Honorable Mentions  on the #35 jersey countdown list .....  Galen Fiss  and  Bo Scott.

▪︎  Galen Fiss  #35. RILB/ILB  is from my era 1956-1966  with 139 games. 6-0227lb. Not flashy just dependable.  Right up and through the 1964 Championship Team, he did his part.

(1931 -2006.)  College: Kansas  Draft: Cleveland Browns in the 13th round (156th overall) of the 1953 NFL Draft.

▪︎. Bo Scott  #35  FB/RB  from 1969 - 2006 with 73 games  Rushing & Rec 666 touches  2950 yards. And two pro bowls.    That is all a FB /REC / Blocker too.

Calvin Hill wasn't bad either as a 3rd down receiver out of the backfield for about 3 or 4 years or so.  I've heard about Fiss; but I had the pleasure of watching Bo Scott play.  He did it all.  I mostly remember him as a FB.

Not even a long night at a concert yesterday, and the sleepiness that is the result can keep me from informing you fine folks that today it is Greg "Tear Away Jersey" Pruitt days until the start of the 2023 Cleveland Browns season. The Browns drafted the small buy dynamic running back out of Oklahoma in the second round of the 1973 NFL Draft, after he had finished third in Heisman voting in 1971 and second in 1972. Pruitt was a rushing, receiving and at the beginning and end of his career, returning dynamo, and would play for the Browns for nine seasons. He lead the orange and brown in rushing five of those years, three times rushing for over 1000 yards, and was a four time Pro Bowler. He finished his career playing with the Raiders for three more seasons, one another Pro Bowl appearance, and helped them win Super Bowl XVIII. For his career, Pruitt rushed for 5672 yards (4.7 avg) and 27 touchdowns, caught 328 balls for 3069 yards and another 18 touchdowns, and had a combined 4521 yards in kickoff and punt returns, with two touchdowns.

Awesome write-up. Thanks Dutch!  Attached is a 22 minute video of him during his 1st 3 years of his career in 1973-76.  It will look like you can't view it but just click on the link where it says watch on youtube and it'll still play. I have an old football card of the AFC and NFC Pro Bowl Return Specialists.  The guy for the NFC was Terry Metcalf (Eric's dad) & Greg Pruitt was the AFC Pro Bowl Return man.  As soon as Leroy Kelly retired Pruitt transitioned from STs return guy to RB just a couple years before he became Flugel's avatar.

Well the  #34  Greg Pruitt a definite solid pick  on all counts good body of stats a good teammate he earned it.

I have a few Honorable Mentions who also wore the  #34  one was kind of a fan favorite who shared a record with only six other groups of players in  NFL history  and the other was a relative unknown in BROWNS history  ....... yeah you guessed it a defensive player.   They are  #34 RB Kevin Mack and  DB Mike Howell  ok how many of you got #1 but passed on #2 ?   OK we will look at #2 first.

Mike Howell  #34  102 games (1965-1972)  27 INTs  steady and dependable but no Greg or any other Pruitt in Cleveland.

Kevin Mack  #34  99 games  (1985*-1993)  and  one of only six pairs of running backs in NFL history to run for 1,000 yards  in the same backfields.   And they are :

1,000-yard Duos:

And  Kevin Mack   #34  also went on to put up some decent numbers in his  9 years in Cleveland,   his only NFL team.  RRTDs  54.  But he might be remembered for at  6' 0"   244 lbs  he had the BIGGEST MAMMOTH shoulder pads on the field.

His 9 years as a RB took a toll on his body too ..... that's probably why it was 9 exciting "Kosar Years" and gone.    But some great memories  ......

Hopefully Jerome Ford will keep up the little tradition going here with guys doing it proud.  I posted something a while back that 34 would be a good jersey to buy because of Pruitt and Mack.  Here's 1 final secret to Greg Pruitt's success (his strength). Here he is in the Superstars Competition putting an impressive amount of weight over his head for a RB that weighed about 185-190lbs.

I'm as excited as some old queen looking at photos of Brady Quinn shirtless and working out to tell all you fine gentlemen that we are now at Daylon McCutcheon days until the start of the 2023 Cleveland Browns season! The cornerback from USC was a third rounder in the expansion Browns first draft in 1999, and is the son of former Los Angeles Rams RB Lawrence McCutcheon. Daylon played his entire seven season career with the Browns, and in an era that had way more downs than ups, McCutcheon was a dependable professional. He played in 103 games with the Browns (started 96), had 463 tackles, 7 sacks, 12 interceptions and 8 forced fumbles.

Here's a #33 that's worthy of mention.  Leroy Hoard was the work horse on our 11-5 playoff team in 1994; and he was such an explosive/power RB that he actually made the Pro Bowl as a FB for the AFC despite the fact he only played RB.  He started 12 games and rushed for 890 yards and 5 TDs while also catching 45 passes for 445 yards and 4 TDs, Again this was in 12 starts only.  That year the Browns matched up against the impressive fronts in the NFC East featuring the Eagles, Cowboys, Giants and Redskins.  Hoard had some really good games against those teams...

Lets just get to brass tacks here gentlemen, for we have now come to the   *Greatest Damn Football Player  to ever lace on cleats, We are now Jim Brown days until the start of the 2023 Cleveland Browns season. Brown was the Browns 1st round pick of the 1957 season, sixth overall, from Syracuse. In his nine seasons with the Browns, he would go to the Pro Bowl every year, lead the NFL eight times and win the MVP another three times. The Browns would go to three NFL Championships with Brown at fullback, winning the NFL Title in 1964. As proud as he was of his NFL career, he was more proud of his civil rights activism, starting during his NFL career. Brown would finish his career with 12,312 yards rushing, 5.2 yards per carry and 106 rushing touchdowns. He would add 262 receptions for 2499 yards and 20 touchdowns. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971.

.... * So true from Cleveland BROWNS and most Football fans everywhere.

NICE!  When many 1st impressions of this franchise begin with Otto Graham and/or Jim Brown - we can thank or blame (or both) our parents and grandparents for the obstacle course to experiencing winning football again.  The sad thing?  This knucklehead wouldn't have it any other way!!!!  Thanks for my dad's memories that kind of became mine Jim!!!!!

Is it just a coincidence that the NFL waited until Jim Brown was terminally ill and passed away until they've made it full blown, unofficially-official that RBs do not deserve to be paid nearly as well as all other skill positions and linemen?  Of course, there's always a Jim Irsay around to remind us a RB like Jonathan Taylor is making way money than anyone on his practice squad.   Phew!!!!  There's a silver lining straight from the crack pipe.  Just 1 question for Jim?  While you continue to put junior achievement behind Center - Taylor rushed for 1811 yards & 18 TDs on 332 carries while adding 40 receptions for 360 yards & 2 TDs in 2021.  More specifically, you've certainly demanded the wear and tear from the 1 guy you don't want to pay as much as your next Carson Wentzwrong?  Good luck with that!

Well when you talk about  #32 Jim Brown  its almost unanimous that he might be one of the IF not the   "first or best GOAT players ever"   in the NFL professional football league  He led the league in rushing in 8 of the 9 years he played,   I think that may be safe to say that  nobody will come close to that stat even though the defenses were set up so 11 guys were trying to stop 1 guy.  Year after year but they never could suceed even when he was a receiver.

And it will go on and on there,  that and the greatest player ever did pass away this year 2023 and of course was and always be an immoral  Cleveland Brown ever  so I was just looking for some pictures to remember him playing the game ...... here are a few.

We've had a nice run of Browns legendary RBs, so lets shift gears, ahall we? We are now Frank Minnifield days until the start of the 2023 Cleveland Browns season. Small but a feisty bump-and-run cornerback, Minnifield walked on the Louisville football team, and started his pro football career in the USFL, playing in 1983 and 1984 for the Chicago Blitz and the Arizona Wranglers. He then signed with the Browns after the '84 USFL season ended, and would play in Cleveland for his entire NFL career, retiring after the 1992 season. He and Hanford Dixon formed one of the best cornerback duos in league history, and he would go to four consecutive Pro Bowls, starting in 1986. Minnifield was also named to the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team.

Well  #31  Frank Minnifield  was a pretty much a run away winner here with  73 memorable games with that awesome BROWNS defense from  1984 to 1992 the beginning of   "the Dawgs !".     I think we all could agree with that.

And some distant  #31 jerseys  and games would be  Jamal Lewis 20, William Green 15  and  Donte Whitner 13.

"Woof,  Woof !"

Lets stay with the cornerback vibe fellas, as we are now Bernie Parrish days until the start of the 2023 Cleveland Browns season. Parrish, like Don Fleming, was a football and baseball player at the University of Florida, and was a ninth round pick of the Browns in 1958. Due to his pro baseball contract, Parrish wouldn't start playing for the Browns until the next season. He was a two time Pro-Bowler, helped the Browns win the NFL Title in 1964, and would play with the Browns until he asked for and received his release one game into the 1966 season. He'd finish his playing career in the AFL with the Houston Oilers, playing the rest of the '66 season there. During his playing career, he also was the team's union player representative.

And again Dutch got my #1 pick at #30  Bernie Parrish who from  1959 - 1965 half of 1966 played in 94 and started in 92 games,  31 INTs. 3 TDs  a very productive player even though he played LCB.

A few others in the  "not so Honorable Mentions list"  were Cleo Miller 30, Jamil White 18, Ken Brown 16 and who doesn't remember Thane Gash 12.   On to the 20s,  we're getting there !
