A few others in the  "not so Honorable Mentions list"  were Cleo Miller 30, Jamil White 18, Ken Brown 16 and who doesn't remember Thane Gash 12.   On to the 20s,  we're getting there !

I always really liked Jamil White. He was a very good 3rd down back.

▪︎ ▪︎ ▪︎   Oh we had a  TORNADO WARNING   today, went right over our house.  Knocked the power out briefly  enough to bring our backup generator to come on.   Kind of exciting  ..... briefly.   ▪︎ ▪︎ ▪︎

Now back to Mr #29 and company.

Our cornerback trend continues, as we are now Hanford Dixon days until the start of the 2023 Cleveland Browns season. Dixon was a 1981 first round pick (#22 overall, back when the Browns picking #22 overall wasn't a dumpster fire) out of Southern Mississippi, and would pair up with Frank Minnifield in the mid to late 1980s to form one of the best cornerback duos ever. Hanford is well known as the person behind naming the bleacher section at Cleveland Stadium the "Dawg Pound", and he went to three Pro Bowls in a row (1986-88). He still is a Cleveland presence, seen on Browns pregame shows for years now.

And again Dutch got my #1 pick at #30  Bernie Parrish who from  1959 - 1965 half of 1966 played in 94 and started in 92 games,  31 INTs. 3 TDs  a very productive player even though he played LCB.

I liked Cleo Miller a lot!  In 1976 and 1977, this 5'11" 207lb guy actually played FB while Greg Pruitt was our RB. In what may seem like a ho hum career for a franchise best known for it's RB tradition, I'm going to post his stats to show what he accomplished the only 2 years he played FB. Pretty good rushing and receiving stats to add to whatever Greg Pruitt was doing.  He was a VERY tough guy for a guy that size.  As Keith Jackson liked to say when he did the college games "he really packs it" - and of course that's what she said too.  However, the numbers outside of 76 and 77 pretty much show he was mostly a 2nd RB off the bench. I remember watching a game when the Browns played the Jets the commentator said that Cleo used to get behind his van and push it up a slight elevation uphill as part of his training.  I think Cheech and Chong did something similar for different reasons. Anyway, Cleo was just an average player with a big heart for the game that made himself memorable to a kid like me.

Well good morning Browns fans! We are four weeks away from Browns regular season football, also known as Herman Fontenot and Ron Bolton days until the start of the 2023 Cleveland Browns season! Hold up, TWO Browns players on the same day, Dutch? "Fo sho", Dutch retorted.

Fontenot was an undrafted RB from LSU picked up after the Draft in 1985. He would play for the Browns for four seasons as a 3rd down back behind Kevin Mack and Earnest Byner, then finish his career in Green Bay for two more seasons. He had 143 career receptions for 1453 yards and 6 interceptions, compared to only 370 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns running the ball.

Bolton was a 5th round draft pick in 1972 out of Norfolk State University by the New England Patriots, where he'd play four seasons, until the cornerback finished his career with the Browns, playing in Cleveland from 1976-82. He had 35 career interceptions, including two in the infamous Red Right 88 Ice Bowl game vs Oakland, taking one to the house.

Oh yes what do 29 + 31 equal ?   How about  Dixon and Minnifield were selected by NFL.com as the No 2 "Best Cornerback Tandem of All-Time." . That's pretty good !

They led a really exciting era of  Cleveland BROWNS  football   when they played together on the field from the  1980s to early 1990s.  You couldn't wait to get your tickets to the game oe better yet in the venerable Cleveland  "Dawg Pound"  zone  known across the football world and even on the cover of Sports Magazines everywhere.

And on TV  home or away you just couldn't wait for  ● GAMEDAY ● and maybe even a get-together with friends whether it's Thursday,  Sunday or Monday Night it was just 60 minutes of waiting to see what  Bernie Kosar  and the offense would do and then turn it over to the Cleveland defense and see what magic might happens next.

It's the stuff that makes and sustains we Cleveland BROWNS football fans year after year and from generation after generation.   And we'd  watch the   5' 9"  #31  and our 5' 11"  #29  in the defensive backfield doing their thing was so much fun ...... we'd hope they'd never end ......  but eventually they did.

Hanford Dixon has kept very active in the local and regional sports picture and online.  Dixon remains a visible presence on the football front in Cleveland, as he is a football analyst for WOIO-TV 19 (CBS) in Cleveland, and the color analyst for the high school football game of the week on FS Ohio. He has a podcast with former Browns QB Bernie Kosar called "The Bernie Kosar Show with Handford Dixon" on the BIGPLAY Network.

Dutch, syd, *Flugs  and others do *give you even more on stats and things,  /I'm just going back in time today.   And I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.   And I can't wait for Mr #28.

* And see various revisions and updates on  8/14/2023 and other dates.      *AND OF COURSE, as always ......

GO BROWNS  !

Well we've broken the four week mark, as we are now Thom Darden days until the start of the 2023 Cleveland Browns season starts. Darden was a Browns first round pick (#18 overall) from TTUN, and he played his entire career at safety for the Browns, retiring after the 1981 season. He went to the 1978 Pro Bowl, and finished as the all-time Browns interception leader with 45.

We've had a good run of very good defensive backs, but now we will turn our attention to one of the most underrated Browns receivers in history, as we are now Ray Renfro days until the start of the 2023 Cleveland Browns season. Renfro was a 1952 fourth round pick of the Browns out of North Texas State University, and he started as a halfback before switching to flanker. Perhaps because he came after legends like Dante Lavelli and Mac Speedie and before loved Browns receivers Gary Collins and Paul Warfield he kind of is forgotten now, but Renfro put up some crazy numbers. He might have been the guy who was the inspiration for the phrase "big chunk plays", because he only averaged two catches a game throughout his career, but he averaged almost 20 yards a catch! He played his entire career with the Browns (1952-63), playing in five NFL Championships, where he scored three touchdowns. He finished his career with 281 receptions for a staggering 5508 yard (19.6 per catch) and 50 touchdowns.

Very solid Safety for the Browns.  So many times when his name comes up today someone will say something like "I forgot about him - he was a great player for us."  I collected football cards back in the day and it helped me remember a lot of guys better over the years.  Sometimes when the decades blend, I can go back to them to make sure I'm in the right decade if I'm discussing somebody in here.

When you have sports played by humans, you are going to have "What Could Have Been?" stories. Sometimes due to injuries, or tragic accidents, and sometimes because a player's demons derail their athletic prowess. Today we are Charles White days until the start of the 2023 Cleveland Browns season. White was one of the greatest college RBs in history, at USC he ran for 6245 yards and won the Heisman Trophy in 1979. The Browns made him their first round pick in the 1980 Draft, but were unaware that White had a cocaine habit, and the five seasons he played in Cleveland (four actually, he missed one entire season due to injury) were a disappointment. He had a pedestrian 3.4 yards per carry and didn't break 1000 yards rushing total, but did add 83 receptions and 684 yards, and had 10 total touchdowns. He was released prior to the 1985 season and would go home to Los Angeles to reunite with his USC head coach John Robinson, who was now coaching the Rams. He would finally have a great NFL season in 1987 when he rushed for 1387 yards and went to the Pro Bowl. He would retire following the 1988 season. White passed away earlier this year from liver cancer at age 64.

Now  #26  Ray Renfro  an excellent choice of a great football player and position coach and many other contributions to football at all levels.  A great guy and father to one pretty good  #82  Mike Renfro,  Houston Oilers and later Dallas Cowboys  player  #82  at both.

And I remember #26 Ray Renfro with the BROWNS. 1952-1963  when I was a young teenager and later  #82 Mike Renfro especially with Dallas from 1978-1987..  Early and later NFL football years for me.

The Renfro families  are heavily involved in football and other sports.

It's Preseason Game #3 tonight, and that brings us to everyone's favorite current Browns player, Nick Chubb days until the start of the 2023 Cleveland Browns season. Chubb was a second round pick out of Georgia in 2018, where he ran for 4769 yards and 44 touchdowns in four seasons. He started his rookie season as the backup to Carlos Hyde, but proved too talented to sit and Hyde was traded in October of the 2018 season to allow Chubb to start. Shortly after, Chubb would rip off a team-record 92 yard touchdown vs the Falcons. In his next four seasons, he'd be named to the Pro Bowl. While he just missed a 1000 yard season in his rookie season, he has averaged 5.0 or more yards per carry in all five seasons. For his career, he's rushed for 6341 yards at 5.2 yards a carry and 48 touchdowns. He's added 119 receptions for another 990 yards and four more touchdowns.

Syd beat me to it, but we are in fact Joe Haden days until the start of the 2023 Cleveland Browns season. Haden was the Browns first round pick (#7 overall) from the University of Florida, and would play seven years in Cleveland. He would go to back-to-back Pro Bowls in 2013 and 2014, and record 19 interceptions with the Browns. In the middle of the Browns 2016/2017 tank job they would cut Haden, and he'd quickly sign with the Steelers, where he'd play the final five seasons of his career, going to another Pro Bowl in 2019. On September 21, 2022, Haden signed a one day contract with the Browns and retired.

Glad you and Syd gave Joe Haden the respect he deserves.

Aside from his cover skills, he was also one of the best open field tacklers we've had at the corner position during my lifetime.  Not only that, this guy was fearless in run support quite often throwing himself into the teeth of the point of attack to make the tackle.  Unfortunately that was the type of stuff that made it seem like he was forever playing through nagging injuries.  Playing through injuries used to be an admirable quality in football before Joe did it apparently. This guy was a great one IMO.

Cincy's 7 time Pro Bowl WR AJ Green called Joe Haden the toughest Corner to match up with.  Knowing their battles went all the way back into the SEC - that says all it has to about how good Joe Haden was...

Top o' the morning to all you lads, we find ourselves at Clarence Scott days until the start of the 2023 Cleveland Browns season. Scott grew up in Decatur, Georgia a Browns fan, and after attending college at Kansas State his favorite team selected him in the first round (#14 overall) of the 1971 Draft. Scott would play his entire career with the Browns, first as a starting cornerback ('71-78), then moving to safety ('79-83). He would go to the Pro Bowl in 1973, and the Browns would go to the playoffs four times during Scott's time with them. Scott had 39 career interceptions and 11 fumble recoveries.

syd, Dutch and Flugs all were right on the money with  #23  Joe Haden  a class act all the way around and from a talented family.

Haden was born in Fort Washington, Maryland to parents Joe and Zakiya Haden. He is the eldest of five boys; his brother Josh was a running back for Boston Collegehis brother Jordan played safety for Toledoand his brother Jonathan played running back for UAB. His brother Jacob suffers from a cognitive disorder and struggles to verbally communicate. Haden advocates on behalf of Spread the Word to End the Word to discourage pejorative use of the word "retarded."

And of course this one mentioned by Dutch,  a real class act.     ;)

On September 21, 2022, Haden announced his retirement and signed a one-day contract with the Cleveland Browns.

Well if nothing else  #22. Clarence Scott  would win this spot based appearances alone as a Cleveland BROWNS player with  85  only  #22  Felix Wright would come a distant second at  28  not close enough.

The other thing his favorite team growing up was  the Cleveland BROWNS  with  Jim Brown  not a bad choice.  He was  thrilled  when the BROWNS selected him in the  first round  ...... however

Scott was thrilled to be drafted by his favorite team, the Cleveland Browns, with the 14th overall pick in the 1971 NFL draft.   He was the first defensive back selected in 1971.

Cleveland fans initially did not share Scott’s happiness, as they wanted the team to draft Ohio State’s Jack Tatum.

Cleveland fans didn’t know who I was.  The Browns needed a cornerback, though.  Tatum was a safety.  Erich Barnes was in his last year, and I replaced him.  So when I ran out onto the field before our only preseason home game, the fans booed.  I wasn’t upset about it either.  I understood.  Tatum was from Ohio State, and I was from Kansas State.”

However, Scott quickly won the support of Browns fans.

In his first NFL regular season game, against the Houston Oilers on September 19, 1971, Scott intercepted two passes, which he returned for 27 yards.

Cleveland shut out the Oilers 31-0.

The following week, Scott had another interception, as the Browns defeated the Baltimore Colts 14-13 on September 26, 1971.

Scott was part of a Cleveland defense that held the Colts to only 41 “net pass yards”.

For his rookie season in 1971 (playing at a height of six feet and a weight of 190 pounds), Scott played in and started 13 regular season games at left cornerback.

He intercepted four passes, which he returned for 47 yards.

With a 9-5 record, Cleveland won the AFC Central Division title in 1971.

Scott contributed to the Browns defense ranking in the NFL regular season in 1971 tied for eighth in total recovered turnovers (40), fourth in fewest passing yards allowed (1,967), and eighth in intercepted passes (24).

Cleveland advanced to the playoffs to play the Baltimore Colts on December 26, 1971.

Scott started the game at left cornerback, but the Browns lost to the Colts 20-3.

After the game, Cleveland owner Art Modell came up to Scott in the locker room.

Scott recalled:

“He said, ‘You’re going to be here a long time,’ and I said, ‘Thank you, sir, I appreciate that.’  And I was there a long time.”

And the rest is * BROWNS   history  ..... for a long time.   Good pick.   God I love this thread, it's history  ..... BROWNS  history.

Yes .....  #24  Nick Chubb  is no doubt the  real deal  bar none.  Probably the best RB in the NFL for years now and has the body to prove it.

This is just one of many out there to prove it.  SO,  do you want to tackle this  1 on 1 in the open field  ?    Yeah, right.       :)

Well tickle me with a feather and call me Gretchen, but we are Eric Metcalf days until the start of the 2023 Cleveland Browns season! Metcalf, a football and track star at the University of Texas and son of former NFL star RB Terry Metcalf, was the Browns first round pick (#13 overall) of the 1989 Draft. He was a rushing, receiving and return dynamo, who started out as a halfback but later would become a slot receiver. He played for Cleveland between 1989-1994, going to two Pro Bowls ('93, '94) with the Browns, and one more in 1997 with San Diego. He was a well-traveled individual, playing for Cleveland, Atlanta, San Diego, Arizona, Carolina, Washington and Green Bay. For his career, he rushed for 2392 yards and 12 touchdowns, caught 541 balls for 5572 yards and 31 touchdowns, and had 9266 return yards and another 12 touchdowns, 10 on punt returns. Any of us old enough to remember him beating the Steelers at Cleveland Stadium with two punt returns in the same game will never forget it.

Well  #21   Eric  Metcalf  also known as   #21  Mr Excitement   with the ball in his hands.  No doubt he was a good choice wearing the number  21 and 47 games played in a BROWNS uniform   but  there were a few good  Honorable Mentions in this number  21  category.

Dutch did go over Eric Metcalf's numbers in his exciting Cleveland BROWNS career ..... however  there are a few others who deserve some mention here.   With  31  games through the  2023 and still counting  there's  Mr Denzel Ward .  And his All  OH-IO  credentials  he could tie or surpass Eric Metcalf this year.

▪︎  Denzel Ward  (The Warden)   ◆ Position: CB.  5-11190lb (180cm, 86kg)   Team: Cleveland Browns.  Born: April 28, 1997 in  ★ Macedonia, OH (Age: 26-114d)   College: Ohio St.  (College Stats)  High School: Nordonia (OH

★  Draft: Cleveland Browns in the 1st round (4th overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft. ★  A future star player !  ★

Denzel  has 13 INTs. 2 TDs. 99 yards long.  Do remember he negates the other team's best receiver.  His numbers :

●  Also  close could be Earnest Byner (who switched to 44),  Brodney Pool 71 and 11 INT and a few others  not noteworthy.

★  But Denzel Ward is a good  second choice.

Metcalf technically started 47 games for the Browns, but he played in 88 games for Cleveland. Since he was kind of a hybrid player, he technically wasn't the starting "tailback" I guess.
